Q: Wifi Constantly Dropping in Lion

Since upgrading my Fall 2009 21.5" iMac to Lion my wifi connection will drop out about every minute and the I have to turn Wifi off and then back on to get it to connect again. Is there any known way to fix this? Any suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks

Probably it depends on hardware, perhaps the latest hardware won't work, but at least my MacBook Pro Spring 2011 model now works perfectly again. I'm angry on myself that I didn't do it months earlier.

Guntis, everyone hasn't tried it because there are reports of downgrading the driver causing other issues for people.  It's mentioned in either this thread or the other.

I have reset the PRAM and other "fixes" suggested in this forum, moved my gateways proximity to the iMac, exchanged my gateway, updated my computer (check every day hoping for a solution),  had my isp provider change channels, talked to Apple support, had machine in to an Apple authorized technician, prayed to Jesus for a solution...... all a waste of time.  I wouldn't call it giving up, at some point you just have to move on.  Unfortunately I can't use the iMac connected by wire, not willing to put holes in my floors and walls for the wire, although I am only 8 feet from gateway.  (Upstairs vs downstairs)   If this unit can be used "connected" then so be it, someone else should have it.  I am tempted to try the downgrade for the wireless driver, but not that technically advanced.  If I screw that up then I'm really in trouble !.   Honestly though non of us here should be spending so much time on this, it's a simple solution really . Get rid of the source of the problem.  I'm outta here.... this is nuts.

Carlo, I am not trying to be a jerk, just asking a question.   So you are saying your advice is for someone who has a network that is working perfectly... other then their Lion machine dropping wifi... that they should spend the time calling an ISP tech or investing in new hardware... to address the one thing having an issue, Lion?  That can be a big disruption when you know the network is functioning.  And in a lot of cases added expense.  For a network 'problem' that isn't really a problem (but a Lion problem).

Hopefully you can see why this answer would frustrate some people.

I'm happy that I didn't know that. I downgraded and it works fine. Downgrade app creates backup of the original .Kext file so there is revert option.

there are lots of posibilities... i would .... if it needed... spend time callint the isp and if i am told i need a new router.. you bet cha... I need the internet... just like everyone else.. so if something didnt work.. i would find solutions or improvise. I think in this case, it is some simple steps. I am online... you could chat with me on  my ichat if you like.

Carlo, I was able to 'fix' my problem a month ago.   I now have the issue that there is no way in heck I am updating the OS though.   I have read a ton of mentions of people who had the problem fixed, only to have it return with the last update.

Personally, my recommended solution for the time being is an easier one, and I am going to implement it.  I am just going to use a wired connection.  I getting some cable this week.  It's not ideal, but it will greatly cut down the aggrevation and is a lot cheaper than getting a new modem or router.

The problem I see with your theory is that I don't think new hardware will always help.  There are a bunch of people here, again the people with multiple working devices and a new mac that won't work, who did upgrade to new modems and routers and are still having the problems.  Even with the people that it did help reduce drops, a ton of them are still having the issue where the machine loses connection waking up from sleep.

Lucky of you... unfortunately there are thousands of users, and some are even Mac Fans, as I am , who are struggling FOR MONTHS NOW with the WiFi dropping in Lion, and who NEVER experimented such a bug in Snow Leopard with the same machine and the same WiFi network and with the same Internet Provider.

I'm ashamed to see how Apple ignore, at least officially the bug in Lion, and even more depressed to see for how long it lasts... without a single words.

Is Apple Inc. , now the largest Wall Street capitalization, becoming blind and arrogant in ignoring customers issues, even if it is just a small part of their customers base. But there are already few hundreds thousands views on the forum on the subject still going on and on...

Oh yes, nothing new in that, the Wifi network and devices are multiple and this since a long time and it will last or become even more diversified... I don't understand why LION is ignoring  this reality and adapts itself to that as all the OS including SL are doing...  Are the Cupertino's engineers so selfish to wait that the user has to fix his internet wifi network to match the bug of Lion ?

I also said... I understand... people are running many different type of devices and have many different types of routers and modems... that is why I am suggesting to start at the internet service provider, the modem, then the router, then the computer. Yes there are many scenarios going on. I am not trying to be insensitive, I really am trying to offer advice that i would want some one giving me if i did not know anything about computers or networks. I was helping someone... and they were using the g band (open) and it was as simple as making it from g to n and securing the network. All the wifi devices (telephones, tvs, ipads, ipods, x box, sony play station, etc) where causing this persons network to hic cup. For others it might mean they have to update their firmware on their modems, and routers.

so what type of router do you have?

I have the router of my IP, called FreeBox and I don't experiment big issue since I have the new one released by my IP. My purpose was not to complain about my own situation (which was very bad before the delivery of this new Box), but to say that the issue appears only when I upgraded to Lion, everything  was perfect with Snow Leopard and is OK with the iOS (for my iPhone and iPad) or for Windows OS.

It is definitively a bug (or a downgrade) in Lion for few network / Mac combination...

So today I'm happy as far as my iMac is concerned , but I'm really sad to see how many Apple 's users are struggling with the settings of their network just to clear a bug of the MAC OS. It is a totally pitiful for the image of Apple.
