Q: Wifi Constantly Dropping in Lion

Since upgrading my Fall 2009 21.5" iMac to Lion my wifi connection will drop out about every minute and the I have to turn Wifi off and then back on to get it to connect again. Is there any known way to fix this? Any suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks

So today I'm happy as far as my iMac is concerned , but I'm really sad to see how many Apple 's users are struggling with the settings of their network just to clear a bug of the MAC OS. It is a totally pitiful for the image of Apple.

so let me get this correct... your wifi is working and your complaining.... waaa waaa waaaa

After all the discussion about jacking with ISP, Routers, Channels, etc..Just wanted to add my two cents I wouldn't waste much time on all that.  I have pretty much a 100% Apple environment, 1 month old iMac running 10.7.3 Lion, All Airport Extremes with 6.0 update.  The iphones don't drop wifi, the iPads don't drop wifi, the Windows xp's don't drop wifi...ONLY the iMac Lion 10.7.3.  It seems only four posible solutions exist 1) downgrade the Atheros Driver, 2) Chunck in some 3rd party USB wifi gizmo, 3) forget about wifi and string cable across our floor, or 4) wait/hope/pray Apple does something, maybe this a "green" feature to reduce our wifi RF footprint.

My issue seems very directly related to the inability to set and keep my "preferred Network" setting.  When the machine wakes up, it has amnesia and at the risk of being banned for life....

Dear software genius since the try this:

010  GET COPY OF SNOW LEOPARD ATHEROS DRIVER CODE

020  GET COPY OF LION ATHEROS DRIVER CODE

030  DO WHILE FIXED NOT = TRUE

040       IF LION CODE NOT = SNOW LEOPARD CODE

050           GET BUSY AND FIGURE OUT THE DIFFERENCE

090            IF LION CODE = FIXABLE

    100                FIX IT

    110                TEST IT

    120                 IF REALLY REALLY FIXED

    130                     RELEASE A NEW VERSION

    140                         IF USERS ARE SCREAMING

    150                             GOTO 100

    210                       GOTO 100

    220                  ENDIF

    230            ELSE

240                   IF SNOW LEOPARD CODE IS UPGRADEABLE TO ??? 10.7 "FEATURES"

300                       UPGRADE SNOW LEOPARD DRIVER CODE

    310                       TEST IT

    320                       IF REALLY REALLY FIXED

    330                           RELEASE A NEW VERSION

    Don't worry.....

You may have a problem tomorrow......

It is NOT a router problem.....

It is Lion for some users.

Not all Lion users are having a problem no matter what router they are using.

It is not your provider, not your router, not your computer......

It is Lion software for some users.........

    Read the posts here.

Many people say they have it fixed only to return the next day saying the problem came back...

There are workarounds if you are that upset about this problem but no permanent fixes....

Hi, I have a late 2011 mac mini also with intermittent wifi and internet..

After reading this entire thread (and the others) here are my thoughts:

1: Ping the router: made the problem worse. Internet was much more slower.

2: Changing drivers back to old version, IO80211 family 4.1.1 to 3.2. Solved wifi issue but made my magic mouse and computer slow. Mouse cursor wasn`t smooth anymore..

3: Changing MTU from 1500 to 1452. No difference in connection. (see below for more about MTU)

    4: Changing DNS. No difference.

5: Found that my router had a MTU interval from 576 to 1492. So I changed both my router and Wifi settings to 1452. This appeared to have solved the issue so far, but I`m not very confident. Internet speed is not as good as in my Sony Vaio. Nice job apple.

    thanks

Wow I just checked Apple's site for a download for Lion and all I see is snow lepord... Hmm could that be its a big problem and apple isnt selling lion anymore? F##### piece of **** upgrade in my book.. I love apple but after this I am not sure i will ever upgrade software. I use a DSL At&t 2wire router(wireless) Its a Lion issue not me issue.. All my other devices from a PC, yes apple a windows, to my ipad and my iphone 4, my i pod touch all work fine. Explain to me why my Iphone 4 wont connect to my 2010(nov 21.5) Imac?

I'm pretty sure it's a firmware/ AE hardware problem. I had plenty of them in the past on my various AE over the years.

If I recall there was a serious problem in 2004-5-ish with a Panther / Tiger firmware update that caused mayhem , this is just more of the same..

I went back to 7.5.2 on a 1st gen TC and have been up and online without any dropouts for over 4 days now.

Also I don't find Carlo's comments particularly helpful. Grow up.

    Exactly.

But what I REALLY don't get in this whole thing is; why do they have the search on AT ALL in a fifty pound 27" iMac? Are a LOT of people moving these things around? I know I'm NOT! It sits in one place, and will till the thing dies - it will ALWAYS have THE SAME internet connection - so why does IT have to search every time you turn it off? I can understand that in iPads and macbooks and stuff, but this thing's big, and it's HEAVY, and it's not going ANYWHERE.

Fix this, Apple. Don't wait till 10.8.

    Cheers,

    Cameron

They are actually handy to move around when you're working on-site with power and you're going to be stationary long enough to want a desktop instead of a laptop. And as long as you never let it go to sleep, the wifi (might, maybe) work for you, possibly.

I am a long time Windows user, and I am telling you - this mid 2011 iMac 27" i5 has hands down been the worst computer I have EVER OWNED!!!  Problem after problem after problem!!!  (hard lockups when playing video when first got Lion, wifi works only when it feels like it, magic trackpad failure, LCD backlight failure, etc., etc.)  I keep hoping updates will make wifi finally work ALL THE TIME, but no, wifi definitely got WORSE with 10.7.3 - all other computer/devices in the house (several win7 PCs, ipads, ipod, zune, xbox360, wii, iphones) have ZERO issue with the same router to which the iMac is connected.  With 10.7.2, wifi was mostly ok, but it got worse once again under 10.7.3, especially upon waking.  This is my first Mac, which I bought after being pretty impressed with the iphone and ipad, but I have come to HATE this thing!!!  I paid 3 times as much for this computer as my last, and am FED UP!!!!!!!!!  Can I get my money back????  When the iMac works, it is certainly a nice computer, but that's WHEN IT WORKS!!!!!  Is it too much to ask to have an expensive iMac actually work ALL THE TIME?????  Aparently it is......

Althoug I just said that my problems have gone away with the MTU fix, I was wrong.. My inconstant download speed went back again...

I'm starting to believe that this is a hardware problem, because I`m having the same issue in bootcamp..

Funny thing is that in my girlfriend's house I had no problems using her D-link router.. pinging the router ip gave me 2ms response time.. I`m having 20 to 1000 ms response using my Tp-link router..

    regards.

I too am having the same problem.  I stumbled upon the following solution from a blog.  It worked for me:

Just UNCHECK that "Re-open windows when logging back in" button when you log out or shut down and then restart.

Not who else recently downloaded the Lion firmware update that was released about a week ago, but it seems as though the stability of my connection is better, and it seems to maintain its connection coming out of sleep mode. Has anyone else had a similar experience?  Now that I've said it, I probably have jinxed myself, but I'm hoping that between that and any upcoming software updates we should see the problem resolved.  Oh boy, can't wait for Mountain Lion! (pure sarcasm of course).

Mine seems to have improved ever so very slightly as well.  Successful resume seems to be somehow related to which apps are open when it snoozes off.  However, when I force it to go to sleep from the Apple icon, which I do frequently, it still fails 9 of 10 times.  I'm curious if you have the same result.
