Q: Wifi Constantly Dropping in Lion

Since upgrading my Fall 2009 21.5" iMac to Lion my wifi connection will drop out about every minute and the I have to turn Wifi off and then back on to get it to connect again. Is there any known way to fix this? Any suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks

Same here goatcabin. Plus there was no update for my MBPro. I hope some imac-users can be happy after installing the update !

I've no idea what to do next...so frustrating. My last dropping: minimum 1 hour!!

"wifi has no ip adress to connect with" (theres always a message like that )

But not for me, or at least now it's hit and miss as to whether it establishes a connnection, rather than never. An improvement?

Same here also goatcabin. No update for the older MBPros. And yes it looks like it's connected but it's definitely stalled and doesn't go anywhere. Eventual persistant rebooting just gives a few seconds of connection again and then nowhere.

This has gone on too long.

I have no idea what to do next except purchase a separate USB wi-fi modem.

wifi is now completely useless for me and I have internet cables running all the way across our house to every room to be able to use the internet at all.

Its gotten successively worse with subsequent Lion updates and nothing that has worked for anyone on this discussion has worked for me at all (late 2007 macbook). Here's the result of each Lion Update.

First Lion install 10.7.1 - wireless intermittent, was working perfectly before.

Second Lion update 10.7.2 - wireless pretty much unusable cause of constant disconnections. Stil useable to get quick e-mails and such but pretty unusable for streaming anything of connecting with our setup that worked for 5 years. Bought a new router thinking that was the peoblem. Somehow it worked better for a few days, then got worse. Took to Apple store and that was a disaster.

Third Lion Update 10.7.3 - nail in the coffin of my wireless. Now disconnects every few seconds and in addition to that, I have to re-boot after hardwiring to the internet otherwise the macbook thinks there is no airport installed.

I don't know the exact date when I updated to Lion to begin with but I bet its been a year now that this problem has been persisting. I have a computer that has to be hardwired.

Just wanted to add my name to the list. This is really messed up. What's so messed up is that all my friends PCs work flawlessly. How can this be? Please don't send links to help articles or anything. i've been throuh them all...

How about starting your own question so people might be able to help you better.

You could start with what wireless router you have and whether you are using Cable or DSL modem, etc....

We have no idea what some people are using here. They could be trying to use an old obsolete router that the cat dragged in from the back yard...

We have no idea unless you tell us what you have...

    NOTE:

I will post no links here for you as you have read them all....

10.7.3 is defenetly worse. Now I can connect to my WiFi only through Join Other Network.

And of course my MacBook Air never reconnects  after wake up.

Updating firmware of my WRT54GC didn`t help. What did help for a WHILE ( with 10.7.2 Lion) was disabling wifi security. Only Mac Address filter was left on.

I like Apple too. But this wifi problem....

By the way, I had no wifi issues while travelling with my MacBook Air. Seems that something might be wrong with my router. But I had ASUS eee PC laptop which worked just fine. And WRT54GC is widely used I guess.

What should I minus my preferred neworks for?

Thanks! Problem solved. It was unchecked REMEMBER NETWORKS. I should have seen this myself. It was checked but somehow it unchecked itself after 10.7.3 update (if such a thing is possible) .

Now it reconnects automatically. But I will check it for random drop outs. I am not sure 10.7.3 update has it fixed.

    Dr Venture

    IO80211:          4.1.2 (412.2)

    Firmware version:          Atheros 9380: 4.0.61.5-P2P

It reconnects to the network on wake, but the problem is that is constantly disconnects evry 2 or 3 minutes.

I forgot to tell you that I did not downgrade my firmware version to an older driver.

I was on 10.7.0 at the tiime I applied the upgrade to 10.7.3 from the software upgrade link at the Apple logo on the left hand side of the bar.

    Aleresi,

So you are connected after you wake your iMac, then sometime later your iMac loses it's network connectivity. When you lose your network connectivity, does your WiFi icon go grey? Do you ever get a pop up box showing available WiFi networks, while you where already connected?

Or, is it that your iMac's WiFi icon looks black, but other applications report no connection to the Internet?

One thing that can help profile your wireless really quickly is to open up a terminal and copy and paste these two lines into the terminal while your iMac is connected to your WiFi network:

    sudo /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Resources/airport -I

    sudo /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Resources/airport -s

paste the results to this thread.

My iMac with the latest update of 10.7.3 with latest firmware update last week is now working very well. No more drops all weekend during sleep/wakeup and during sessions.  It's back to snow leopard days!

Sorry to others who are having issues still.  I have airport extreme at home so I couldn't tell if it's due to certain routers or not either.  Hopefully apple will address your issues asap.
