Q: Wifi Constantly Dropping in Lion

Since upgrading my Fall 2009 21.5" iMac to Lion my wifi connection will drop out about every minute and the I have to turn Wifi off and then back on to get it to connect again. Is there any known way to fix this? Any suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks

Has anyone attempted to upgrade to 10.7.1 yet?

It claims that one of the things that it fixs is wifi dropping.

I didn't have WiFi issues until AFTER installing the 10.7.1 update.

I did the 10.7.1 update tonight. It is a 55 MB download and installed without an issue. It appears to have fixed the wifi issue I was having, which was frequent disconnects when using 802.11b and/or long beacon intervals. I did a workaround (changing the access point to 802.11g and a 50 msec beacon time) which worked for me but obviously I can't do this with every access point I use. With 10.7.1 it seems to be stable, coming back without a problem after sleep, and working OK with 802.11b. This is with a new mid 2011 MacBook Air.

Well, let me see, William Kucharski.  I stated that my Internet conneciton was dropping repeatedly after installing Lion.  I stated that I was able to maintain a stable connection to the Internet when, on the same computer and using the same router and the same modem, I booted into Windows XP.  I also stated that I heard that Windows 7 was a good operation system.

Now, which one of those facts do you not like?  I'm guessing you're a "fanboy" and an adolescent.  What else could explain your obvious dicomfiture with and hostililty toward reality?

IzzyJG99, I had the same problem after a few minutes of being online immediately after upgrading.  Then I unplugged the router and the modem and restarted them, and since then I have maintained a stable Internet conneciton.  Try rebooting those two items and maybe even your computer too.  Good luck, because If that doesn't work you're going to need it.  I did all kinds of Google searches to fix the problem before the .1 release, and never found anything anywhere that shed light on the problem. I don't know why, but it seems that with Windows there are a thousand sites where you can find all sorts of solutions to a myriad number of problems. With the Mac, though, it's like there's a curtain drawn on the inner workings of an impenetrable fortress of an OS, and if Apple doesn't publish the answer then there is no chance in **** of ever getting the answer anywhere else.  At least that's been my experience. I can't speak for anyone else.

I had the same problem, update to 10.7.1 fixed it. Try apple software updates to get it.

Because coming to an Apple Support Discussion and mentioning that you like Windows 7 is like going to a Windows fourm and mentioning a preference for Mac OS X; it's of little utility and serves only to stir the pot and foment comment.

I also stated that your experience does not, in fact, mean that Lion was at fault for your situation and have given examples in this thread and elsewhere as to how that could be the situation.

"Because coming to an Apple Support Discussion and mentioning that you like Windows 7 . . ."   I never said I liked Windows 7.  I don't own Windows 7.  What I said is, I heard it was a good operatin system. I own Windows XP and it is installed on my iMac and it was maintaining a stable Internet connection using the same hardware that failed when I was using Lion.

I and others do not get it.  An OS is an OS is an OS.  The question is which one does what you want it to do. These OSes are not relgions; they are not tenents of faith.  They do not define a life philosophy and they are not politcal parties.  They are tools, pure and simple.  One is not morally superior to the other.  They are the products of the human mind, albiet very high-functioning human minds.

I paid for a 27" iMac on the same day that Lion was released to the general public.  I could have bought much cheaper computer with more advanced hardware, but because of the OS the Mac is stable and has presented no problems with viruses or malware and even the older ones work as well today as they did two or so years ago.  So I paid the premium for the OS and the hardware engineering.  And when I and others ran into the confounding and frustrating connectivity bugs contained in the initial release of Lion and no one from Apple stepped forward to own the problem or promise the solution, we were justifiably angry and distraught.  Just as those whose computers still are still not fixed remain now.

This is not a lovefest.  We want working computers and we paid for them.  Would I go to a Windows forum and declare my love for Mac?  I suppose I would if there were an occasion to and I were of such temperment. But I suspect the Windows folk wouldn't give a flip one way or the other, and I see no reason why anyone on a Mac forum would give a flip if someone came here saying they loved Windows rather than Mac.  It's not a childish competition.  These computers and their software are business tools, pure and simple. When they do their jobs, we are happy. When they don't do their jobs, we are entitled to an explanation of why they don't and when the problem will be fixed.  Apple fails to answer those questions, and for that reason I remain disgruntled with Apple, and I feel sure I'm not alone.

Fred in Virginia. There are many trolls out there that cruise message boards and bash on products they don't like. Let's excuse the people that don't believe you.

Now, you bought a Mac because you want it to work. Have you called Apple support? They will bend over backwards to help you and I am sure your problem will be solved. The update stabalized wifi for me, but my issue was fixed last week with a very simple 2 minute process...did you see my post with instructions?

Good luck buddy...My dad has a windows 7 and it's okay. He is changing over to a mac soon, just like I did 2 years ago. But to each there own.

I upgraded to 10.7.1 tonight and I still have the same problem.  Wifi drops frequently and gives the "no internet connection" exclamation point in a lab where I have never seen another computer have a problem with the wifi.  Come on, Apple, this is like using wifi in 2001.

I haven't had a drop since chaning security to WPA2. Haven't installed 10.7.1 yet either.

I also upgraded to 10.7.1 and it is better but still have the problem. Before the upgrade, the wifi drops were so much that I was sitting in front of the Mac by doing nothing and staring to the screen. Now, it still drops but frequency is low. I am afraid that frequency may get higher, because when I first installed Lion, also the wifi drop frequency was low, after some time of usage it got higher.

I've bought a 30 feet ethernet cable to plug between my router and Mac 2 days ago. I am an anti-cable guy but I have to use an ethernet cable after paying 2K USD for my beloved and rock-solid iMac!

Seriously, have you contacted AppleCare and opened a case with them?

I am still experiencing WiFi drops after the update, though possibly slightly fewer.

Additionally, I was getting a lot of Safari error pages saying that I was not connected to the internet and I am now getting error pages which say that Safari cannot find the server.

Not the most appropriate place to say this but the last few weeks have been the most disruptive, frustrating and damaging in 30 years of computer use and 27 years of Mac use.

I think that this is a pivotal point for Apple when the demographic shift of their customers reached a critical mass that having drawn in consumers several years ago with iLife etc. heralds the end of the concept of the traditional/typical Mac user, i.e. the creative professional, of which I would (though I don't klike being categorised) concede to being.

It has been on the cards for quite some time. I have worked in and belonged to other organisations who lose their identity when commercial success overides the original philosophy - this could hardly be more true than in the wake of the revelation that Apple has more cash than the US government and is the biggest grossing company on the planet.

At the mment, I'm cornered and cannot, following all the difficulties I have encountered, make a simple revertion to Snow Leopard - it would mean losing essential data (just don't ask how but Lion progressively cut me off from my Time Machine backups and now just deleted them!) - but my long term plan is to retreat to an environment which is stable and supports the way I work, probably Snow Leopard, and stay there like a grumpy luddite, albeit one who embraced new technology until it ate itself.
