Q: Wifi Constantly Dropping in Lion

Since upgrading my Fall 2009 21.5" iMac to Lion my wifi connection will drop out about every minute and the I have to turn Wifi off and then back on to get it to connect again. Is there any known way to fix this? Any suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks

As a loyal Mac user for years,I amgob struck that they have reamined silent for such a long time over this obvious problem.

Sorry, but my post was not related to your case in particular; it was meant generally about the article you quoted though.

Especially as a lot of people stumble in and only read thru post's are a bit "German afternoon TV" minded and did not want to think or even read carefully. They see the quoted article and understand that in a matter of "all is clear" if I wait for the update.

As I know a lot of step's you've tried (the ones you've given reports about) it may be not a homebrewed in your case.

On the other hand .. Experience teach: "It's always a pebcak"

Sad enough we will see the remaining pop up here again when the "Lion is evil" plea is not longer working for them.

    Hi Lupunus,

of course things repeat themselves. I have been on NeXTstep since 1995.

    So basically OS X. ;-)

And of course a lot of users come here to tell about their problems.

But I think it is quite unfair to tell them off for "ranting".

If everyone would shut up until they have something substantial to say, then there would probably be the impression that there is not really a big problem with Wifi on Lion.

It was very "relieving" for me to see that it was not me or my setup, but somehow a Lion fault with Wifi.

Because so many people posted a "me too" message.

Believe me, I have tried every solution so far.

I am even on the Apple seed program now to see if the new builds solve the problems.

This means I am beta-testing on my life system. Quite an effort.

But please let people "rant" here, as long as they don't each take 10 posts to do so.

I find it very understandable that people who have problems, sign up the first time here, and tell about where the shoe hurts. And some of them are not savvy enough to contribute to a solution. Not everybody can.

    All the best,

    Martin

Well i finally have a stable connection once more, wakes from sleep ... well, like a dream .... The issue was on the iMac with the Atheros chipset. Downgrading to the 3.2 kext solved the issue for me.

For now i can patiently wait, working as usual, while the 10.7.2 udate comes out.

if anyone needs the link google Rys Sommefeld or go to  rys.pixeltards.com

    Good Luck!

Has anyone else tried this?  How would I revert this if if it didn't work or caused more problems?

Well, it worked for me .

At least for the first hour now.

I first did it in a wrong way. You will have to drag IO80211Family over the Kext Utility after unzipping both files.

I am not sure if this is reversible, but its working so far on my late 2009 iMac.

The download contains the 3.2 kext (IO80211Family.kext) and the kext utility. Drag the kext onto the utility and it performs the install.

if you check the /System/Library/Extensions folder after you install the 3.2 kext you'll see an IO80211Family.kext.bak folder. This is your 4.0 kext.

To revert back to 4.0, copy the folder elsewhere, rename it to IO80211Family.kext and use the kext utility to install it, just as you did with the 3.2  ... now you're back at 4.0 and all the issues.

    Enjoy!

One important thing i've noticed, it seems the 3.2 kext doesn't support Airdrop ... (something i will miss ... but network stability is more important to me)

Right, yes I rebooted after installation and its finally working fine now. Now I can cut that local area network cable that has been in my room for months .

    Basically, yeah...

And such a powerful system. Had to use NeXtstep on a SUN for a while at that time.

Oh contraire. It's definitively NOT unfair.

It's fair to the ones who have started a clear question and try to solve there problems.

As rant and rave only disrupts the discussion without any use or help to anyone, rant and "me too's" are very unfair.

"me too" posts are also useless as they most contain no info except "me too" and the opener of the thread still knows that there is problem and want help not "me too's" disrupting the threads.

The only way to point Apple eventually on a problem via the community is to open a question for every single issue. If any "me too" and rant poster, instead of raiding the threads of others, had opened a own question in the matching branch of the community there where a clear count of the problems.

I understand well that people having a problem want to tell where "the shoe hurts". But also people having a problem should remind that there is a minimum of social behavior, what will fortunately let them remember not to bark into others conversation.

Imagine you have a problem, sitting at your office or as freelancer at home trying your very best to find a solution.

What would you think about "me too's" and rant in a thread where friendly people try to save your a**, while your customer or boss tip's on his wristwatch every time coming across your office, reminding you the deadline for the project you should have finished?

What if that will also be the deadline of your job if the project is not completed in time?

Did you eventually notice that all the very experienced cracks here with thousands of recommendation points refuses to write in threads with countless "me too" or rant posts?

What did you think why the wont??

There is no need to contribute a solution if you can't.

They all are clever enough to use a keyboard, read and rant.

On that they are definitively clever enough to ask questions and provide a minimum of information.

All have the same opening page after sign in, telling them how to ask a question and provide them the rules of the community.

For that there is the BIG BLUE button with "How It Works" on it.

By all good means, this is not AOL chat, facebook or Bart Simpsons Springfield-Elementary schoolyard.

THanks for this info.  I tried this fix and it seems to be stable for now.  Good to know I can revert if I need to though.

This is the first time I've had to do anything like this with the Mac.  Reminding me of the PC days and why I switched in the first place.

Apple does not look at these forums for problems.

If you wish to tell Apple about this problem, post on the appropriate feedback page on this site
