OS X Lion 10.7 Sleep Issue

Installed Lion this morning and the only issue that I have found thus far is sleep.

I use an external display as well as the laptop display. When I close my MacBook lid and wait several minutes, I do not get the sleep mode winking LED and my second display does not go into standby, probably because the Mac has not entered sleep mode.

When I raise the lid, my laptop display appears to have been in standby and the Mac looks to be doing a device discovery. After the discovery, the Mac display is normal but all the apps from my second display are now on the Mac display.

Anybody have a clue as to the cause or is Lion just broke?

In my case Mail has to be closed to make my MacBook Pro sleep. Since I have never ever had a problem with that until I installed Lion, I will just hope for an update.

SOLVED:

if your mac is not sleeping properly (mine was not sleeping only when the power was plugged in) do this:

open terminal:

run pmset -g (you'll get an output similar to this)

Active Profiles:

Battery Power -1

AC Power -1*

see the line "sleep 0 (imposed by 18)"? that means pid 18 is forcing sleep to be disabled, that's what the zero 0 means.

now do "ps -ef |grep -e 18" and find out what 18 is. mine was cupsd or internet printing. in preferences, print and scan, i unchecked, share this printer on the network.

i re-ran pmset -g and got:

So I don't think this could help in my case. Has anybody else than W M R and me the problem just when mail is open? Would really like to know if this is a common issue with mail or if somehow my installation of lion wasn't completely successful.

If you have this problem, too, please report it via feedback in mail to apple, so that they can fix this.

Question to W M R: Have you got an imap or a pop account configured in mail?

Sleep can be initiated in several ways:

1. Manually

2. Timer pop (changeable in system preferences)

3. Lid closure of a laptop

For me, manually works fine. I have not tried the timer pop because I don't have that requirement. However, I would like to close the laptop's lid and have the system go to sleep as it did in Snow Leopard.

It appears to me that the system believes that I desire to continue using the system because it moves the laptop screens to my second display. However, since I do not have a second keyboard or external mouse, using the laptop with the lid closed is impossible.

Lion needs to add an option to system preferences so that the user can determine what action the system should take when the laptop lid is closed.

if mail is running and you close your lid to your MB, the machine doesn't sleep correct? how do you verify this?

have you tried to reset your power settings in Energy Saver for the "Power Adapter" to default and try again?

also, if your mac doesn't sleep again after this can you post the log from your console during the time you try?

Mail is running and MB does not sleep when lid is closed. Second display is still active with all the screens there were on it and the MB screens as well.

I have reset many things with no resolution.

can you disconnect your external display and see if the MB goes to sleep with the lid closed?

i don't have an external display but i hear that the MB staying awake after being closed while an external display is connected is a feature. i believe, but am not sure, it can be modified in the Displays preferences at the top. Perhaps you can attach a screenshot of your preferences pane.

I disconnected second display. The system realized that and after a few seconds all screens were on the MB screen.

I closed the lid and after almost a minute it went to sleep. I have pasted the lengthy console messages but have not had a chance to discect myself as I am not an expert. Display preferences will be pasted at end.

Thanks for trying to help. I'm sorry, if I haven't posted this yet, but my problem is that it doesn't sleep automatically after a set period of time.

Forcing it to sleep (via closing the lid or via apple ➙ sleep) doesn't make any problems.

What I posted was from when both screens were plugged in.

I looked at with 2nd screen disconnected and it was the same except that the arrangement tab was now gone.

That's my problem, too. Shutting the lid or clicking sleep makes the macbook pro sleep but it won't go to sleep after the time I set in Energy Prefs; neither on power or battery. I have reset PRAM, SMC, emptied the caches, and even deleted the system configuartion folder as suggested above; nothing. Maybe a fix in 10.7.1?

Try calling 800-APL-CARE ... that's how I got my version of the sleep issue resolved (SystemConfiguration folder replacement). It took about an hour of back and forth though, but at least my system now behaves how I expect it to. Your case should be a free call too since you upgraded to Lion.
