Does anyone recommend OS X Lion?

I've seen many comments about people having different problems and trouble with the new OS X Lion, does anyone recommend me to download it? My current OS is Mac OS X 10.6.7.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

I really, really hate it.

So many things changed that I relied on, so many things broken. Bugs where the windowing system hides windows. Bugs where windows out of focus get mouse or keyboard input. Bugs where windows out of focus on remote machines get the keyboard input from my mac!

Functionality in the Finder (command control 1) where you are prevented from changing the sort order once it's turned on.

Functionality that is removed (Safari's command key for the Download window and Mail's Bounce feature) are gone.

Open two windows in Safari, download a file, option tab to the Finder, Click on the Download tab, watch one of your Safari windows close.

Email enclosures that you get are automatically set as "locked".

Moving applications created a shortcut, not the file you are trying to move.

Copying DMGs will fail often if it thinks the symlinks aren't supported.

Gestures seem to fail more if you are left handed.

Clicking "ignore" in spell checking reloaded my web page while I was trying to enter data.

So, so so many details are not there, are simply broken or are redesigned to be user unfriendly.

It's like a bad set of training wheels got slapped on top of a port of iOS.

If you are a professional user relying on a QUICK and functioning system... Lion is a TOTAL no go...

If you get off on eye candy and like to watch your processors MAX out just by opening and using your mail app.

Then Lion is a MUST have...

The OS is LAZY and NOT thought through. AT ALL... Snow Leopard is MUCH faster.

Again Apple screwed up GAMMA in the quicktime X player.

But I have gotta say this : Lion equally MATCHES Apple's New Final Cut Pro X in that it boasts a BUNCH of completely USELESS features and LACKS all the professional ones.

Been using and LOVING macs since 1995. Those days are counted though. Next CPU I am getting is a PC unless they fire that Mobile-***** CEO over at Apple...

Apple was inching closer to becoming a replacement in the workplace and business market but this has been a big step backward from where I sit. Perhaps they can fix things with future releases but I'm going back to SL. Well at least it was only $29 and not $129. That's life - learn, love and now loss.

The Windows 7/8 team in Redmond are smiling, and sadly I'm not. If Apple keeps their direction I'll be forced back to MS. :-(

I agree with your post. I wish Apple would realize that there are two main users of its products:

  1. People who want a simple appliance
  2. People who want more customization and complexity.

So it should make distinct products and not try to overlap or unify them.

For me the loss of Spaces and Exposé will be a big impediment to my work.

Now I expect a few bugs with an initial release, but relative to past versions this is ridiculous....

Hey, anyone who wants to go back to the Dark Side can have my place in line. I bought a PC once, back in 1979. The first time I laid eyes on the Macintosh, I saw the light. Nothing could make me go back.

The Windoze team is most definitely not smiling. They couldn't produce anything even half as good as OS X if their lives depended on it. They seem to spend all their time thinking up inane remarks for the benefit of really stupid people. Apple has nothing to worry about, no matter how many bugs Lion may have.

Speaking of which, I recall that Snow Leopard had more than its share of irritating bugs when it first came out. I ran my main machine in dual-boot mode for months after the initial release. It seems that memory is an extremely selective and unreliable resource. We remember mostly the bits that support our current cockeyed notions—like your criticism of Apple for not satisfying your desire for them to gain market share in the enterprise. How do you know that Apple has any desire to do that? And besides, what does that have to do with your own personal experience with Lion? Nothing.

I also use Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3. Just as an FYI, you might want to go to Adobe Support and read " Known Issues with Adobe products on Mac OS 10.7 Lion ".

I think I will be waiting for a while to upgrade to Lion, until these and other issues are exposed and resolved.

I have never had any computer other than a Mac and have no plans to change that now. There are always bugs and kinks with upgrades and new releases, and they always seem to get resolved over time.

I love you folks who lead the charge and take that first volley of arrows. It is often true that the early bird gets the worm, but it is as well that the second mouse gets the cheese.

I' m getting a terrible experience with Lion, this is why i don't recomend the upgrade at least for old hardware (and by old i mean 2009 and 2010 Macs...)

Well, by that definition, mine is downright ancient (early 2007). Get out the wheelchair and put it in a home.

I haven't had any beachballs or other odd behavior you describe.

Have you booted into Safe Mode and see if it works-->if it does it is likely a third-party conflict

Have you tried a different user account (a new one preferably)-->If it works, you've got something wrong in your user account.

Have you tried reinstalling?--go to Mac App Store, hold down option key and select Purchased tab. You should have the option to Install.

Love the new kitty. Installed two (2) different ways. Once from the App Store. This left too much SL junk around. Then I did a clean install off a DVD. Wow, what a difference. Lion seems to run faster and smoother. If you have a machine to install on that is NOT mission critical, go for it. But, it is different than anything you have used in the past on a computer.

How do you get Lion onto a DVD?? I really want to do a complete clean install, but AppleCare seemed to think that that's not an option. They told me that Snow Leopard has to be installed first, or the Lion installer won't run. 😝

Thanks, that might be worth a try.

"I bought a PC once, back in 1979. "

Really! And that makes your comparison between OSX and Windows worth listening to? What version on Windows did you have to make you switch to the Mac? The PC and MS-DOS only came out 2 years later in 1981.

You obviously didn't read the post of john_gwn very well. You obsiously have greater problems writing your thoughts clearly. His posting here is of valid information and seems to be pretty well supported by others. Did he inadvertantly kick you Apple Altar? (Windoze, Dark Side,.. very mature) This is not a place for Mac vs Windows rant, which YOUR post most obviously is.

john_gwn was pointing out that beyond many bug issues, (I agree) Apple has seems to have taken a deliberate turn to the 'simple appliance' across their range of platforms. That's their business decision, follow the dollars. Unfortunately there are many of us who use computers for more than just surfin the web. Many of us actually prefer the Apple you worship over Windows you so flipantly dismiss.

Truth is we don't always CHOOSE our platform. It's often dictated by what it can do and what it can work with in the corporate environment or software apps we need to use. Now we would LOVE to see our OSX be able to do that so we COULD use OSX at work. 10.6 made some big steps in that direction and was starting to get a toe in the door with some of us.

Lion takes a big step backward from what I've seen so far. (Perhaps time will prove me wrong and I hope it does). That's a business decision for Apple. It's also fair warning to others like us who may have expected or hoped 10.7 would go from a toe to a leg in the door.

john_gwn rightly expressed caution to power / business users to beware of Lion, they may be better staying where they are unless Lion shakes out better. Especially it seems those with system more than a few years old or with a broader base of 3rd party software and hardware. (New platforms, basic software seems to work well)

As for blind rants about who loves what OS better (like yours) they are best posted in some other site.

.. and save the comeback, I'm outta here. I have a hard drive to restore.

You've been using it "a while" it's been out for two days. ok

"Of course, if you read all the stuff here you'll be convinced that it's a disaster."

I have yet to read the OS is a disaster, glitched or flawed sure, but isn't any OS when it's first released?

"All the folks who don't have a problem don't come here."

Um, no. some who don't have problems come here to help ppl that do.

And that post was the " correct answer"

pfft.......
