Full screen apps in lion ruins external monitors ..

Actually I would expect Full Screen Mode to do precisely that - after all when in FSM you don't have the "desktop metaphor" running.

What I *would* expect is in effect both monitors to display the same thing though.

I'm sure it will all come out in the wash some time....

I agree with Tom, I'm hoping they will correct this behavior and make secondary displays usable with windows beloning to apps other than the full screen app on the primary display.

I suppose it could be taken as a change of metaphor - does FSM disable Normal Desktop Mode or is it layered on top.

If layered the NDM should persist on other monitors, if disabled not.

Interesting one - I'm sure there will be much discussion on this one!

ShawnGrinter2 and tom162 did describe user scenarios that I would consider to be valid by themselves, depending on what a user wants. E.g. "displaying the same thing" would probably apply to instances where a beamer or presentation mode is neeeded.

I can add to this:

a) I want the choice of which monitor the window is placed on when on a multiple monitor setting

b) I want to be able to use single full screen app per monitor.

c) I want the choice to have the app span both screen in full screen mode

I think Apple did not pay a lot of attention to scenarios where users use more than one monitor.

At the moment the only reasonable solution is to drag what you want as full screen by the bottom corner and drag it so it fills the screen.

Lets hope in the next System Update they will resolve this!

I totally agree, even trying to set full screen on secondary display disables it.

Hope this will come soon in an update.

I'm surprised they don't let you run multiple full screen apps, one per monitor. That seems like a no-brainer to me. Come one Apple! There are definitely situations where having to swipe back and forth often is not efficient.

Definitely with you on this one, Tom... Any full screen app will completely render my external monitor on my MacBook useless. Even the new version of iTunes won't full screen on the external monitor unless you detach the video window and then "fit it to screen", which is not *real* full screen... Hope this gets fixed soon.

Here is a screen shot of my 3 monitor setup under Snow Leopard, and it is my understanding that Lion will make the two side monitors display a linen pattern.

The center monitor (iMac 27") is Aperture in full screen mode, the left one has Mail, the right Safari, both have Aperture HUDs.

I'm thinking that real linen would have been cheaper than faking it with two external monitors.

Yes. David Pogue can't help, only Apple can. But there is hope. Try Chrome, they did it right. Apparently it depends on the developer's implementation.

That is very cool. And ur right, Aperture will no doubt do that today. But it can change. I think if you tried Chrome in fullscreen, you would get something like you have.

@neoonline, I don't know how to get three on a MacBook Pro, but I'm guessing it's possible with an external device. There may be limitations on the sizes of the externals.

However, my argument still holds for a MBP with one external monitor. I don't want it to turn into fake linen either!

I have a MBP, and I'm thinking I'll try Lion on it using a spare internal drive and test this out with a monitor from my iMac.
