Lion randomly crashes - black screen

Lion crashes ever now and thenand stays on a black screen. Its totally unresponsive, all I can do is force shut down but I've done this about 4 times already today any idea what's going on, or how to fix?

Thanks!

I wish I could say the same. I have "upgraded" two MBPs to ML, and continue to experience the crashes, possibly less frequently but far too often to consider these computers as reliable or productive. Running Lion or ML for serious work is like trying to do carpentry with a hammer whose head constantly falls off. Apple seems only interested in the pre pubsecent FB, Twitter, IM market for its latest products.

Jul 30, 2012 6:14 AM in response to whetty101

here's my update and some final thoughts on the issue:

they replaced the LB, free of charge even though the computer is past the warranty (it qualified for the TS4088 recall). and now everything's fine. the assistance was actually pretty good.

i've said it before, i'll repeat: there's no software fix, will never be. you could at most "hide" the problem, which is really bad, specially when there is a better free solution.

take your computer to assistance. print the TS4088 article. ask them to see what tests must be run to check if the computer applies for TS4088 recall.

also: video-stressing tests don't detect the problem.

because, like i said before (read my previous posts), it's not about the intensive graphics, it's all about the switching to nvidia.

i believe the TS4088 test is a not the ordinary video stressing test. and so, if your computer has the exactly same problem we all shared here, and if the assistance says your computer didn't apply for TS4088, you can be pretty sure they're running the wrong tests. take it to another assistance or explain the issue to them, ask them to check which tests they're running.

i guess that's it. good luck to us all.

PS: It's great that there is a recall for a free replacement of the LB. But Apple could have done this much better. They should have made it a real "recall" (they don't even use that word, which is a shame). They should have mailed the owners of these MBP models, informing about the problem and the recall. Instead, the TS4088 only mentions the recall in small, confusing letters at the end of the article. That's coward.

And then people are lost searching on the internet for a solution, afraid they'll have to pay hundreds of dollars for it, angry because their computers aren't even 2 years old. Not to mention all the assistances that have never heard about the problem. And this is a very serious problem, on a very expensive computer. It should have been handled more seriously.

I did the same. Took my Mbp into the Apple store to get the Logic board swapped out. I told the tech I was one of the people on the message board having the Black Screen of Death issue. Since the LB replacement, I haven't had any further problems. I was scared to upgrade to ML though, but so far it hasn't crashed since then either. (Knock on wood.) I was covered under warranty as well, so this was all free of cost The invoice however says if I didn't buy AppleCare this would have cost me USD$578... Ouch! 1/4th the cost of the device. It seems like the gov't should have forced a recall/replacement.

Jul 31, 2012 10:20 PM in response to Net-wolf

I wanted to report that the other day I finally got a call back from the Apple store. They finally replaced my logic board and said they were sorry it took so long. I just wish they would have listened to me a month ago, it shouldn't have been this difficult to get resolved. The only reason it was fixed was due to the help on this thread. I wonder how many people ended up spending hundreds of dollars on repairs because they weren't aware of the recall...Anyway, I'm happy it's over with, and I haven't had any further problems so far.

Aug 1, 2012 12:21 AM in response to whetty101

okay, since friday, when I upgraded to ML...no crash!

for people saying this is a HW problem and only LB replacement would work: ...well...it wouldn't. as you can read, many users report the problem persists after the LB replacement. the fact the ML upgrade fixes the problem to a certain extent might signal apple is working on a SW solution after all, they just haven't figured it out yet.

they replace the LB, because at this point it is the only thing they can do and not loose integrity - but apparently it seems to me the problem is not in a faulty series of GT 330M, but in the combination of components. they just replace one with another. it might and might not work.

ML seems to be much more stable. I did run some stress tests and no crash since the ML. give it a try. if you don't want to pay..well..it's not that much, the license is for 10 machines and eventually, you have to upgrade at some point.

I'm about to go crazy.

Aug 1, 2012 4:44 AM in response to BilgeFoyle

Oh wow Bilge. That definitely suggests that your Video Card may be the problem, else it could be your drivers. NVresman is a part of the graphics driver and IOPCIkit is your PCI connection (which is the tech that computers use to connect graphics cards to motherboards)

In fact it's pretty likely to be your drivers, so much so that Nvidia got kinda ****** at Apple drivers (and lies about needing EFI) and released thier own, which can be found here http://www.nvidia.com/object/macosx-270.00.00f01-driver.html?ClickID=czsxaznvwkn f4fsf7kqwppfei7fziiiqpnsn

Try that and see if it helps.

Aug 1, 2012 4:55 AM in response to kkiran

I very much think they will (make one for Lion), but not yet. I just realized on Bilges logs however that he has a MBP. Due to the fact that the installer has a lot of drivers for PC based cards built into it as well (it makes any Nvidia card Mac compatible while speeding up all native Mac cards on Mac Pro) it may refuse to install. The advised method for installation is this (I have it and it fixed checkerbox glitches on a Snow Leopard partition on my Mac Mini)

Download the driver.

Right click on the installer package file and click 'Show package contents'.

Individually install the .pkg files contained in there.

If that doesnt fix it, I am officially stumped. 😀
