Lion crashes ever now and thenand stays on a black screen. Its totally unresponsive, all I can do is force shut down but I've done this about 4 times already today any idea what's going on, or how to fix?
Thanks!

@Aexis,
It seems to be the EFI Software Update v1.9 didn't installed properly. Even though you have right version of Boot ROM, I'm not sure about SMC version since it's not at disclosed for this update. Several users reports that they unable to maunally apply the software update. Even built-in software update fails to install this update propely.
Try to download the update from here (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1098) and install it. If you can't install it, you may need restore the old firmware. However Firmware Restore CD for MacBook Pro 15" 2010 is not at available on online.
You can only use this to restore the firmware after an interrupted or unsuccessful update. If your computer is already in this state, you'll need to download the software and create the CD on another Macintosh computer, or you can take your computer to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to restore your firmware.
I don't agree with you, in fact I installed the EFI Software Update v1.9 (and a lot of other possible drivers) manually before attempting to reinstalling Lion for the 3rd time. Nevertheless Lion remained highly unstable crashing every 5-10 min. |
Even though you applied the latest v1.9 update, it didn't updated the firmware propely! (you can still see the latest firmware version in System Profiler.) However I'm not sure! It crossed my hands by the way!
@meratechstuff
I did download and try to install 1.9 firmware but it says
alert "this software is not supported by your system"
I am all out of ideas.
Even if this firmware is not the cause of the black screen crash in Lion I am disheartend that a separate issue of firmware not installing correctly and unable to manual install is also coming up
thanks for the ideas though I am grateful
@Aexis,
A separate issue of firmware not installing correctly and unable to manual install is also coming up...
Well, there is a chance for that too! Apple is seriously looking into this, that's all I can say!
@meratechstuff
I do appreciate all of the community comments tryng to diagnose and troubleshoot this issue and the apple engineer / support team. I did get a call from an apple enginner and sent a diagnostic log via email for these issues so yes the issue is definetly being looked at.
I encourage everyone to be supportive and try to submit as many crash reports via automated apple sender and also post to this thread of what may be a common pattern causing this (Macbook pro 2010's + Intel or nvidia 330m and Lion graphic driver or firmware incompatibility perhaps?)
Hopefully this will be resolved soon so our macbooks are useable without black screen crash interruptions
I appreciate the sentiment for people to keep reporting their issues, but making this up to be some huge personal inconvenience weakens your argument.
Threatening to form a lynch mob or throw some group tantrum makes us all look like a bunch of hot headed people that don't have a clue about software or hardware.
Of course there is a problem.
Those nice kernel panics are the signal that the coders didn't anticipate how data would flow and they need to figure it out, and get a fix out.
Does anyone honestly believe a sudden rash of crash reports from Apple's brand new baby are going to be ignored? Submit your reports systematically, if you can figure out how to cause the crashes or have a theory - file a bug. at http://bugreporter.apple.com - that's the way to get technical people looking at your problem.
This place is explicitly NOT the place for asking for support or technical support. Moaning about the lack of engineering response in the wrong place is like petitioning the supreme court to pass a new law.
This place is for people to help each other out - so here's my offer to help you.
If your business suffers - stop using Lion ***immediately*** and restore from your Snow Leopard backup and keep using the sofware that's been out for years. It's not suddenly less useful because new toys are on the horizon. You could lose work the next time your mac crashes. Why keep using somethign that is causing you pain or grief?
Same is happening to my i7 2010. My keyboard lights up as well. All since lion.
Same here i7 2010 since installing Lion yesterday. Keyboard lights up & it is frozen.
I worked out a solution that has so far worked great for me!.. Only temporary until they fix it of course..
Good ol' Boot camp. Windows 7 works great 😀
Once fix coems out i shall revert back to Lion
Dave
Same is happening to my i7 2010. My keyboard lights up as well. All since lion. I am going back to snow leopard until they fix the issue or 10.7.1. Also Apple, please go back to the snow leopard gesture for Exposé.
Was out all day yesterday - but further to my posy yesterday the details of my machine is below.
Definitely happening for me when the screen is dimmed by powersave or goes to screensaver - simply becomes unresponsive from this process:
SteveS
iMac 21.5 - inch, Mid 2010
Processor 3.6 Ghz Intel Core i5
Memory 12 Gb DDr3
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7 (11A511)
I've followed the suggestion to force my graphics card to "intergrated only" and it's been working well since.

Do you need to install this extra tool for that or do you just have to turn off the 'automatic switching' option in the system preferences?
The error now seems to be changing. Have no clue why.
