Same issue with my 2010 MacBook Pro. I made a new post, but will add to this one. I noticed that it happened a lot with the updated Album Art screensaver... either when it was active or when I saw the preview in the control panel.
Also happened with some web sites viewed in Firefox... maybe Flash related.
I would have to say that it has some thing to do with the NVIDIA GPUs. I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2010 15 with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB that crashes in Lion all the time. Screen flashes (not like on or off, but like turning off an old tv) and goes black with the keys lit up. Apple needs to fix this, but I do have to say that the gfxCardStatus method works. I have been running 100% perfectly with only using the on board Intel HD Graphics 288 MB GPU.
Same for me: I've already got black screen two times.
Unfortunately those two crashes happened in two different environments (during a long work session, and immediately after a sleep awake, so the MacBook Pro was totally cold), so I can't find out what is the reason of the crash.
MacBook Pro 2010 - i7 - 4GB - 15 inches
Same for me (black screen, frozen system ...)
macbook pro (mid-2010) - 15" - nVidia GT 330 M
i have a 15" macbook pro, 2.8 c2d/8gb ram/512mb nvidia... i installed lion and it crashes LOTS. it crashes when sleeping or coming out of sleep (if im lucky it will come out of sleep) i like lion, but im going back to snow leopard tomorrow till they sort this out. Im not leaving my laptop sitting at 90c in standby just because apple hasnt fully sorted this OS out before release.
I have been able to consistently replicate the black screen crash by clicking the apple icon in top left menu just as the computer boots up and begins to fade into the OS/desktop.
I´ve pretty much the same Problem as the second post has (OS X Lion wants me to do a hard restart).
But I´ve the Problem with the 2011 MBP 15" (small one with 2ghz). Other than that I´ve 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD.
Any words on updates yet?

Same issue. 2010 MBP i7 with 8GM Ram and SSD. I cant use my laptop with external display because i have not got 5 minutes before the black screen crash appeared. Today, i could only start my computer on 3rd time.
Apple please fix the problem quickly!!!! I need my computer, i cant work...
I have the exact same issue, 2010 i7 Macbook Pro w/Nvidia 330m. Kernel panics when switching effects in photobooth/Kernel panics whenever it feels like it after installing lion. Almost certainly a graphics driver issue. Pretty poor that Lion "shipped" this way.
Also this post now has over 4000 views and no word from Apple?
Same issue 2010 MBP i7 4GB ram and 7200rpm drive. Never had a problem until a fresh install of Lion on a fresh drive - now has hit me over 5 times. Pretty consistently the last entry in console is:
7/24/11 10:29:28.835 AM [0x0-0x24024].com.apple.iTunes: The plugin 'Quartz Composer Visualizer' failed to load because it has the wrong CPU architecture for this version of iTunes. (3585)
To Apple: In reference to the next patch for Lion, all I have to say is, "SHIP IT."
I get the reboot screen a lot. I'm running a 13" MacBook Pro 2.26GHz Core2 Duo, 4GB RAM, graphics card is NVIDIA 9400M. So far, I've tried:
* Repair disk and repair volume
* Repair permissions
* Integrated mode with gfxCardStatus
Each time, I thought I got a little relief, but it always comes back. I've given up for now (always have a recent backup with Time Machine, folks!!!!!).
One annoying thing that didn't restore properly (I suspect a p-RAM setting got changed): my Logitech bluetooth travel mouse now constantly gets "Connection Lost" if I haven't clicked it for 38 seconds. I'm not in the mood at the moment to reset p-RAM (you know how it is when you get things the way you like ... too bad Time Machine doesn't back up p-RAM!).
I did try Lion on a freshly installed Snow Leopard partition, and didn't hit any crashes with that, but that's not exactly the scenario I need to work.
Sure hope they have an update soon. I do like a lot of Lion's new features.
Just another update: using Integrated Mode in gfxcardstatus for two days now and am crash-free. I think this is definitely pointing to an nVidia driver problem.
Apple I hope you are still working diligently on this. I didn't pay over two thousand dollars to use the Intel Integrated graphics on my MBP!
