Looks like others are having luck with what I posted to try: https://discussions.apple.com/message/15873956#15873956

I've been running for 4 days solid after trashing the/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist  file and rebooting.

    Good luck!

You posted the same thing on Aug 23 at:

Re: Mac Os X Lion Crashes after resuming from Sleep

Does that mean you are now going 8 days without trouble? :-)

This has become a thread of black magic, incantations, and voodoo. It's like True Blood around here.

    @G.L. Gray

Yeah! It's been 8 days. I was lazy and just copied/pasted from the orig post - sorry. Good news is others have seen success, too. Nice to have a solid-running Mac back...

OK, now that is much more interesting? :-)

Have you been running gfxCardStatus during those 8 days? Have you turned automatic graphics switching back on in the energy saver pref pane?

    Thank you.

I'm not sure what gfx...is. But to answer your question, yes, I 've had automatic graphics switching on for the last 8 days, too.Screen Shot 2011-08-27 at 3.57.53 PM.png

Thank you Michael. I am giving your suggestion a try. I will report back if I get another BSOD or if I run for a few days without one. I thought removing those windowserver files had solved the problem too, but after about 10 or 12 days of running fine, I got three BSODs in a few hours, so I went back to using gfxCardStatus.

By the way, gfxCardStatus is an app that can be used to force the machine to use just the integrated graphics.

    Fingers crossed.

Yes, I encountered kernel panic during clean install of Lion too, in the stage of detecting wifi networks.

The problem disappeared after logic board replacement.

Well, that didn't take long. I had a BSOD a few minutes ago. Back to gfxCardStatus until Apple comes up with a solution.

    @G.L. Gray-

Bummer to hear that! Did you try everything I noted:

I, too have experienced the kernel panic and multiple "wake-from-sleep-black-screens-of-death". I tried pretty much everything mentioned in the discussions, including:

    • verifying the hard disk
    • repairing permissions
    • upgrading to 10.7.1
    • trashing windowserverXXX

After each attempt, my late 2010 MacBookPro i7 with 8GB would still crash with the BSOD upon wake from sleep - and I think it ONLY happened if battery-powered only (ie, not plugged in).

I've been running for 4 days solid after trashing the/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist  file and rebooting.

I'm not claiming victory yet, but it's been the most stable "fix" of everything I've tried above.

    Hope it works for you.

I have been following this thread for some time now.

Sadly I am a case of buyer beware as I bought my MBP used (in pristine condition) off amazon.com for a steal.

If I had known then what I know now I would have never ever picked up this model. I upgraded to Lion the day I got the computer and soon after that it was BSOD after BSOD. Sometimes just navigating an empty desktop with no apps. I probably had over 90 crashes in 3 weeks, if not more.

I couldn't take it anymore, so I wiped the HDD, and reinstalled SL. However this only slightly fixed the problem. I am still getting irregular BSOD's.18 of them in 5 days. It "seems" somewhat better if i do NOT use SMCFanControl (without Lion this model actually runs pretty cool).

I have gfxcardstatus, and once again it "seems better if I leave it to Dynamic switching and check "on" to automatic graphics switching under energy saver. Integrated....the performance is so horrible It feels like using a computer from 5 years ago, if not more with any type of graphic-intensive app. In my opinion, its not a realistic option for many of us.

I have ran ALL the fixes in this thread, including an autorun of AppleJack. I am hoping the latest "user fix" a few posts above works, I really have nothing to lose, now do I? My last resort is bringing it to the apple store on 5th Avenue in NYC and demanding a logic board out of warenty. I really don't want to cause a scene and be "that guy" in the store but if this continues I honestly have no recourse.

What really grinds my gears is that I personally have sent 100 reports to apple, meaning they have THOUSANDS of them to sort through by the looks of this thread. Something like this deserves a recall and a free logic board from apple. If my computer were an automobile, and it randomly stopped working on the highway "sometimes", I think the consumers would be rather upset. the same logic roughly applies here. It is obviously a combination of faulty hardware and software and a rushed out Lion which made things even worse. This is a bad product that made its way into the market.

I have been a LOYAL customer for apple for over 25 years, going back to the old apple II's.I have never owned a windows machine ever. This is perhaps my 10th laptop from apple and without a doubt the most troublesome.

Macs used to have a reputation that they were more expensive but more solid (hardware and software). This is the tradeoff many loyal Mac users make to the brand. I have beaten and abused so many laptops (remember a laptop from '02 that fell of out my bag onto concrete from 6 feet up and I opened it up and to my amazement, worked perfectly) and they keep going and serving me loyally through the years until this particular model. I am ashamed for apple.

I will repost if the latest fixes do work. Time will tell.

-ps also upset 10.7.2 does not seem to resolve the issue as of latest seed.

RWBOBMC: Unfortunately, you don't know if the computer had some performance problems in the first place---which could indicate why the prior owner sold it. But there are a dozen reasons for slow performance; I never assume anything about my client's computers without a hands-on examination.

Apple's warranty is only valid for the original owner of a product, unless it was covered by AppleCare, which is transferrable. It may be difficult convincing Apple to replace the motherboard out of warranty while they're working on this problem, and perhaps more difficult since you're not the original owner.

If the problem turns out to be hardware and an Exchange + Repair Extension Program is instituted, you're probably fine. Those programs cover products out of warranty, and I don't recall any of them requiring original-owner proof of purchase.

I wanted to add that if this problem is in the video chip---or one of the main support chips---it could be exacerbated by higher temps. This would explain why SMCFanControl helps some folks. Again, just speculation.

A disadvantage of the switch to the Intel CPU: Hardware designers could become dumbed-down to simply plopping a CPU and Intel support chip set on a PCB. Then Apple would add various peripheral chips, power-management circuitry, and whatnot. Gnarly issues that need really sharp minds take a long time to figure out if you haven't got the sharp minds handy.
