Yeah I kinda see where you are coming from. I find it a bit suspicous that Lion was released around the same time as when the 2010 models were about to finish their 1 year warranty. I feel sorry for the people with no Apple Care.

I can't believe the service some people are getting when out of warranty... some are being told it will cost $xxxx because warranty has expired... some are having their motherboards replaced out of warranty for free. The inconcistancy with apple's so called genius support is staggering.

Btw, for the people who are being told to pay up $1000+ for MB replacement try calling support and plead you case... if they don't give in see if you can buy extented apple care. I've heard of people receiving apple care *after* a fault when only a few months out of the free 1 year original warranty. Also... I suggest dealing with apple care over the phone and get through to a supervisor anyway. The genius support just seems far too random...

I also installed gfxCardStatus and choosed only use integreted (the intel video card) and now don't have randomly crashes, I think the problem is when the computer automaticly change between the both video cards

it´s not the change (i think).

try to force your macbook to use the nvidia and then start photobooth in fullscreen and go to the effects (second or third page will do).

    ---> BSOD

another opportunity would be to force the mac using nvidia and then open a pdf with more than two pages in "quickview" (via spacebar) go to fullscreen and scroll in the document. ---> BSOD

also try to zoom in and out in iphoto '11 ---> BSOD

and so on and so forth....

i don´t know whether its an hardware problem or not... i just want my mac to run smoothly again....

i´m curious whether apple can repair my macbook or not (they picked it up yesterday)...

This Lion/MBP nightmare is getting even worse!

On Wednesday I got notified by service that my MBP is ready for pickup - fixed. I went to the shop and was told they've replaced the logic board. When trying things that used to break it (photobooth effect, facetime, document preview etc.) Lion was stable and worked just fine even when hooked up to external screen.

What didn't get fixed is starting slideshow in MS Powerpoint 2011 on external screen (kernel panic caused by NVDAResMan)

And not only that - half of my keyboard now wasn't working (!!!!) and the repair centre "didn't notice."

So I left without my MBP, it goes back for another repair and I've requested teh entire laptop be swapped. We'll see what happens.

I've again heard a few unofficial comments from the techs there (this not an Apple Store, but an authorized service centre) - It's a 330M GPU driver/firmware issue, Apple know about this, but they're not admitting any faults. And the logic board replacement DOES NOT permanently fix this, just buys some time before a SW fix is available.

My WORK laptop is now unusable for over a month, and being serviced for third week in a row.

    UPDATE:

So after downgrading back to Snow Leopard from fresh install. Everything seems to be working fine. HOWEVER, the black screen still occurs just less frequent. It happened when I used expose and playing a game. Happened 3 times within 24 hours.

    i had a phone call today ...

he said me that Apple knows this problem and they are working for a software update.

we have to wait for this update, there is no other solution, except downgrade to 10.6.3, but this is no solution for me.

Also Apple has forbidden to change the logicbords for MBP2010 mid!!!

i'm very angry at the moment, because he don't know when the update is released ...

maybe in 2 days or 2 month!!!

    fking crap Apple!!!

now i'm going to write a mail to Apple that they should give me a better solution because i can't work 100% ...

Hey I've been following this issue and decided not to upgrade to Lion yet as a result. But I may have some good news:

    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/09/02/apple_seeds_mac_os_x_10_7_2_icloud _beta_10_to_developers.html

It specifically mentions that developers should concentrate on GraphicsDrivers so maybe that's a good sign?

It is my hope that this attention to GraphicsDrivers is a good sign. Time will tell.

Give them my case number (236002514) ask why many people have had the MB replaced if its forbidden? Ask why the service is so inconsistant?

rang Apple Care and got a rep in Australia (I am in NZ) on Wednesday, he was cool, he got me to try reparing the hard drive through the recovery area, and when that didnt work he recommended SMC Fan and escalated me to a senior advisor.

He got me to resintall Lion through the recovery disc, which surprise surprise didnt work.

Each time I have called I have mentioned this thread and that I see the same errors that others in this thread do, and that its only since I installed Lion that my machine has kernal paniced every five minutes.

So today i rang back after getting sick of it not working (dreading yet another call to Apple) and got escalated to Martin. What waste of time that was.

He stubbornly refused to believe that it was a hardware issue, that many with mid 2010 mbp's were having the issue was the first he had heard of it and that any commonality was speculative and that he was sure it was a software issue.

He got angry when I said no I would not reinstall my system from scratch, I am sick and tired of jumping through hoops for an issue that is so clearly either a hardware issue or an issue with the drivers which a complete reinstall wouldnt fix.

I then asked for a manager, I did not wish to speak to someone who clearly didnt read up on Lion issues or refused to accept that there may be an issue. I even gave him the id for this thread which he didnt even listen to. But I was told he was the last line and that if I wanted to complain I had to speak to a different department, who oh so conveniently didnt work saturdays. So I would have to call back then. **** NO. Told him that they would be calling me.

Going to ring the place I bought it from see if that gets any joy.

Have lost complete faith in Apple Care.

I never did send my laptop to Apple, since I've been reading online that many of the computers sent in for repair are returned with Snow Leopard installed and no repairs made if the computer passed the hardware test in SL. I talked to Apple and they said that yes, this may happen...I'm not going to go through installing Lion again...on a positive note, my 15"MBP i7 2.66, 8GB Ram, Nvidia 512MB GPU seems to be working just fine again. Don't ask me why, because I can't tell you... The only reason I'm sticking with Lion is because of the security improvements---- http://www.itsecurity.be/mac-os-x-lion-makes-major-security-improvements

I know that eventually SL will have problems in this area...rather be ahead of the game on this one. BUT, I sure do hope the driver / software / power management issues are ironed out by Apple really soon.

I don't want to sound too optimistic after all everyone has been through, but maybe something good has happened.

I installed the latest beta 11C48 10 minutes ago and my mid 2010 has not crashed with the dreaded photobooth move-between-the-pages method. (before this, it happened 100% of hte time)

Please keep in mind that it's just 10 minutes so we definetly need more testing.

With the beta 11C48, are you able to use graphics switching? For example, is your MBP using both the discrete and the intergrated graphics cards?

I'm using gfxstatus to force my MBP to use only the integrated card as using the discrete card is what causes the crashes.

I've been trying to get Apple to take my case seriously for several weeks. They've admitted that it's a software/driver issue but the only advice given by their Senior Support staff so far has been "downgrade to Snow Leopard". Great advice!

I'm interested to know if anyone who has access to the 11C48 beta (10.7.2) has noticed that this bug has been fixed. It would be a great relief to think that it might be but I'm not holding my breath.

I've lost a lot of faith in Apple and their ability to acknowledge and deal with their customers with integrity and respect.

I see that a US law firm is beginning a class action against Apple on behalf of customer who have experienced this very issue: http://www.seegerweiss.com/product-liability-actions/macbook-crashes/.

I too was using gfxcardstatus but so far so good.

On monday I will definetly stress more the machine during work (vmware + 10 other apps open with an external display).

Keep in mind that for me the photobooth switch-between-the-effects-pages was 100% BSOD.

    Now it works.

We absoultely need more people to try this beta and report.

(I'm not a developer but it seems that the betas are not that hard to find...)
