Been talking with an Apple Rep after I sent an email to Tim Cook about the issue (apparently they get forwarded to reps to deal with), he's been keeping in touch with the engineers about the issue and they originally told him the options for dealing with the issue were either: a. replace the logic board or b. revert back to Snow Leopard. They are working on fixing it in a future update but there aren't any ETAs. We talked again today and said he got another call back from the engineers. They informed him that the logic board should be replaced (perhaps they just found out that it WAS a hardware issue?). He'll be contacting me on Monday again once he finds out how to proceed with the repair (as if there was a specific model of logic board that fixes this issue).
I use my macbook for work and have been without a stable laptop for close to two months. Here is my documented timeline of attempted repairs with still no fix so far with my Mid 2010 macbook with lion if anyone is interested after 4 logic board replacements:
Last week of July/Beginning of August: Crashing to black 10-20 times an hour creating error reports
Mid August post on this forum, get contacted by apple engineer to send more error reports directly to him
Download software updates 10.7.1 etc and still crashing to black
Keep posting and browsing this forum looking for fix, waiting for "software /firmware patch"

Finally can't take it anymore and take laptop in to get new logic board, as that seems to have fixed the problem for others on forum. Told to wait 3-5 days for replacement.

Told the old logic board is faulty and has been taken out. The replacement logic board that came is also faulty. They have to order a 3rd logic board and I have to wait until September 15.

Apple store called me and told me everything is good to go and to pick up in store. I go in and turn on laptop, goto photobooth ->effects-> second page and instant crash. Apple employees are courteous but am really disappointed I got called in to pickup laptop after 7 days and still same problem I've had for 2months.
They say they can fix it and ask me to wait in store for an hour. They reinstall entire operating system and tell me the problem is fixed. They bring laptop out to me after an hour and I goto photobooth ->effects->2nd page and get an instant crash.
An apple admin tells me this is 100% a hardware problem they are installing a 4th logic board. I tell them I use my laptop for work and have not been able to use my laptop with any stability for about 2months and have been without my laptop physically for about a week and 1/2 if they are going to replace the logic board a 4th time. I am not getting any compenstation for lost time or productivity with my macbook of course either. Everyone is really polite but situation is very frustrating.
Bottom line after this 4th logic board and week and 1/2 in repair I feel I have made a reasonable number of repair attempts and demand they replace my computer with a 2011 model, with same customization specs (SSD Drive, 15inch glossy High Res Screen, Upgraded RAM and upgraded processor which I paid for on my 2010).
Still going strong with absolutely no BSOD after 3 days after replacing my logic board... It makes sense it's a hardware issue from my standpoint, but initially I thought that there was no possible way it could be hardware since I had no issue in SL. I am doubting it's a Lion issue because of numerous people like me who had their logic board replaced and fixed the issue. I know others say it has always been a hardware issue and Lion just exacerbated the hardware issue. Anyone else have a theory that could possibly link the hardware/software dilemma? Fireware? Driver? I doubt either of these since these haven't changed on my system - only the logic board and now it works perfectly.
I initially posted on page 2 of this thread. I have a MBP i7 mid-2010 with nvidia 330. Over a month ago I had my logic board replaced and have not had one single BSOD since. I had this done at the 5th Ave Apple Store in NYC.
Btw, in Snow Leopard never had a BSOD.
Folks, I highly recommend you do not wait for a software fix, bite the bullet and get your logic board replaced. Also, if you are out of warranty, like me, many have still got this done for free.
Just went to an Apple Store (I've Apple Care): at the end I've decided not to leave the MacBook. The guy told me that almost all the motherboards used by Apple for the reparatins are refurbished, so the problem would easily present again.
At last, Lion really doesn't worth the upgrade, so I'll stay with Snow Leopard.
My latest update.
Got my logic board and harddrive replaced after passing the ASOD and still able to recreate my problem. Install google chrome run it and the app store which usually got my machine to crash. No problems. Leave the store, go home. Do my time machine restore (3 hours). That is when my problems begin. Now, instead of a black screen of death, I get a kernel panic about every 5 minutes. Call apple support, am instructed to erase my harddrive, reinstall lion (again 2hrs). Lion has a hiccup in install, but I finally get through it. As instructed, I then only load my user info (1.2 hrs). I then go through with a bootcamp install (.5 hours). Do the bootcamp install and get a bluescreen in windows shortly after.
Go back to my OSX and download Chrome with safari. Kernel panic.
I do the falling fresh installs (not from Time Machine)
Install Microsoft Office 2011, Kernal Panic
Install MacKeeper, Kernel Panic
Install Parallels, Kernel Panic
Run Parrellels, Kernal Panic
At this point, I am desperate and install third party ram (.2 hours).
Problems still remain (run parallels=kernel panic, and random panics throughout).
On a side note, once I get my machine home, I give it a nice look over. There is thermal paste on the outside cover, at the base of the screen, at the fold of the screen, and below the left hand side of the keyboard. When I installed my RAM, I also noticed there was some dust on the fans, indicating that the apple store couldn't even be bothered with cleaning the fans.
Needless to say, I am a little angry. We will see how it goes today with my support call.
