Lion crashes ever now and thenand stays on a black screen. Its totally unresponsive, all I can do is force shut down but I've done this about 4 times already today any idea what's going on, or how to fix?

Thanks!

I'm currently not convinced that iStat Menus 3.18 (3.18) offers a suitably comprehensive guide to the gamut of things that Apple does with 10.7 (Build 11A511).

Defocusing from iStat Menus: consider the possibility that third party software items — alone or in combination — might contribute to an issue such as a crash.

Same problem, random kernel panics. Have MBP 15, i7 with Nvidia 330M.

    Hellooo Apple, earth calling.

Lot of us have these problems on MBP 15, i7 with Nvidia 330M.

From panic logs it seems to be a graphic card issue. I'm wondering if it concerns just Nvidia 300 M series graphic cards ...

Does anybody have similar problems on white Macbook with Intel integrated graphics or with other graphic cards (e.g new Macbook Pro with ATI graphic card)?

Well my brother's MacMini runs fine with his NVIDIA GPU... It could only be the 330Ms

Apple, could you please take care ?  It is not that easy to work in those conditions! At least, please tell us that you are working on it!

I like working like this. Puts an edge to work. . Jk Apple needs to fix this now. Also if Apple can patch Comex's Jailbreakme PDF exploit in 24 hours I can't see them not fixing this. This is outragous.

Yeah I keep hearing that 10.7.1 is "nearing release" but I hope we don't have to wait that long. The fix seems to be relatively simple: roll back the driver to one similar to the one used in 10.6.8. None of us ever had this problem while on any 10.6.X build so they actually have a bunch of driver revs to choose from. Why not issue that as an immediate driver fix and then 10.7.1 can fix all the other bugs they've discovered since launch.

It's amazing how this has soured me on the Apple experience. I have a lot of friends who say "never upgrade until .1 or .2" but I've had great luck with 10.4 -> 10.5 -> 10.6 so I jumped in with both feet at 10.7. I'll know better next time.

They only problem I have had was going from Leopard --> Snow Leopard (Wi-fi). Other than that all the 10.x's have been fine in someway or another. Knock on wood.

I am having the same problem - MBP 2010 2.66 i7. But you're the first to mention Bluetooth problems. Aside from going/quitting to a black screen with seemingly random clicks (the left-most pane in Mail, when clicking on a new message, will usually cause the crash) all my bluetooth devices (mouse, keyboard, trackpad) also stop working and do not reconnect with any grace or regularity. For me, it was the inability to use the keyboard (no bluetooth) that surfaced as the first problem. Then the constant crashes.

Ok so the 10.7.2 beta that was seeded to developers has no bug fixes:

Posted this on page 2 but this temproarily stops the crashes for me

Installed 2 utilities gfx status and fan control and seems more stable now. Will keep monitoring for crashes however has only been about an hour without crash since installing these

    1. gfx status install, click little "i" in top menu bar and (set to integrated only)

    DL Link

    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/33905/gfxcardstatus

    2. fan control install, search fan control in spotlight or goto system preferences -> other -> fan control and (set to 2500 default RPM and set low and high temp thresholds to lowest sliders)

    DL Link

    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23137/fan-control

My macbook now seems to be managing heat much better with these utilities and settings.

Hopefully a software/firmware update for Lion will apply some of these fixes if this is the issue!

the fan temp control seems to work well with integrated option

IT-IS-NOT a matter of temperature. Trying to cool the system it is totally useless.

It's a driver/software issue, and only an update from Apple (or a downgrade to Snow Leopard) can fix it.

@UCLAMacConvert Actually this was a widespread issue even before Lion. I was getting this exact crash atleast a few times a week even on Snow leopard. I read of cases where apple would replace the motherboard + video card which fixed the issue. The problem is getting them to admit there is a problem because sometimes its so random to create the KP.

Its just that since Lion its made it a rampant problem. There is definately a issue with the nvidia card on just some machines. I have a work mate with the identical model april 2010 macbook pro i have and it has no issue at all with lion. Another workmate has the 2011 ATI macbook pro again with no issues...

Everyone needs to lodge a bug + attach their error logs here: http://bugreport.apple.com/

If you have not lodged it there do it now. FYI, this is just a community support forum where we help each other. Apple does check the forums but does not seem to communicate directly so you NEED to lodge your problems via the bug forum.

Also make sure to always report the kernel panics to apple when your machine reboots after the "black screen of death". Speaking of which, seriously  apple, this is a worse experience as I've ever had on any windows machine...
