Oct 25, 2011 3:53 PM in response to vea1083by PR-Imagery,Take it to a service centre. At this point if Apple deems nothing is wrong, contact whatever consumer protection agency required. This isn't a minor or relatively acute issue, it's pretty widespread. Only thing really press Apple until they honour their claims of the best computer money can buy and the best service money can buy.
I recommand ASUS.

Oct 25, 2011 7:02 PM in response to whetty101by loujacob66,The fix worked for me.
I have noticed, as I've reviewed almost every page of this thread, that there are many folks with *different* problems and seem to be inclined to attribute them all to the same cause. I know that my particular problems matched the initial descriptions, and the synopsis provided by Apple...
Hope those of you with other problems get them solved - not sure if this thread will be the best place to vent those frustrations. I recommend writing a letter to Apple (that is what I did, and it was worth the 20 minutes of my time).

Thanks for those reasuring words. I will go to the genius bar next tuesday to see what they say, I have the impression that Apple does not want to help me on this issue because I decided not to buy the extended AppleCare warranty. I think that Apple should at least give 1 year of phone support and 18 months of hardware warranty for those computers over $2,000 USD. Their AppleCare asking price for the 15 inch MBP in my view is very high.

Although I am frustrated with my MacBook Pro at this time. I think I was still ****** off at the time I was writing that message. Don't get me wrong I like my MBP but in the last 3 months it has annoyed me with this annoying black screen bug issue at log in. Something that never happened to me under any previously owned Windows based PC.

Oct 25, 2011 8:24 PM in response to vea1083by UCLAMacConvert,Whether you bought Applecare should have nothing to do with it if you reference the knowledgebase article. In that article they state that they will extend the warranty for affected 2010 MBPs to two years. They were released in March/April 2010 so by definition all affected 2010 MBPs are covered per that knowledgebase article, Applecare or no Applecare.
I can't stress this enough: Apple acknowledged the issue and gave out what they believed is the fix. If it did not work for you the knowledgebase article itself says to take the next steps and contact their support center. Just posting how angry and frustrated you are on this thread is not going to solve your issue. Apple does not read this thread. They even post the various links and phone numbers you can call in that knowledgebase article, so you don't even have to look it up yourself.
If the software didn't work the solution is simple: contact Apple per their instruction in that knowledgebase. If you have the problem they described in it and a 2010 MBP, you will be covered for repair regardless of if you bought ApplecareOnce again, here is the link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088

Oct 25, 2011 8:45 PM in response to UCLAMacConvertby loujacob66,Yup!
I was out of warranty and didn't have AppleCare. Getting in touch with Apple is definitely the thing to do vs venting here in the forums (unless it makes you feel better, of course)...

Oct 26, 2011 12:03 AM in response to UCLAMacConvertby tim_dba,You're completely right. Just made an appointment with a genius for Saturday. Hope, my MBP finally gets fixed.
Anyway, the way, Apple dealt with this issue (ignoring it for a long time and then releasing a patch, that isn't really working) so far is really frustrating. Most of us spent $2000 for a good reason and so had a very expensive paperweight for the last 3 months.

Oct 26, 2011 2:12 AM in response to vea1083by Jorge Castillo S.,Hi,
I installed the MacBook Pro Video Update 1.0 and my system froze during the day in a work session (in my case the freezes are random). I went to the Genius Bar as says the report from Apple (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088) and the suggestion was they escalate the issue to Apple Phone Service.
At Apple Phone Service, they escalated to a supervisor and he told me there is no solution at present and the only thing left is to wait. Anyway, he sent me a software that should run after another freezing to send the information of the system and console logs to Apple's engineering section.
Perhaps those who do not yet have a solution we should inform Apple in all ways possible.
A greeting.

The problem is that AppleCare is saying that my issue is not related because my black screen issue occurs at log in and is not as obstructive as what is stated in the article, yet the issue is still related to the graphics switching funtionality on my MacBook Pro. I repeatedly stated the Apple Support Article (TS4088) but the rep still I requested me to pay for a support incident. I let them know how frustrated I was with the issue that they asked a PR rep to give me only a single case support incident for free. Although, I talked with a "Senior Software Engineer" he quickly dismissed my claims and said that my MacBook Pro was not in a repair program, but told me to still make an appointment at the Apple Store Genius bar. That's why I was very frustrated yesterday (and still to some extent). To make matters worse, while I was on hold the computer froze after toggling the graphics switching (although no black screen), which for some reason froze Safari and then froze the Finder leaving me no option other than shutting down my computer via a forced restart.
I will go to my local Apple Store on Tuesday next week and see what they say. My hopes are not that high on any resolution on my log in black screen issue. I think Apple is just going to run the diagnostics and say that my computer is fine, and then ask for a $500 logic board repair...way to go Apple.
