Oct 28, 2011 5:35 AM in response to nps999by Michael Moy2,re: nps999 and vea1083
Back in the summer of 2008, I brought my daughter's MBP in with the
dead video card and they were not aware of the nVidia 8600 problem
even though there were large numbers of reports of it on the Apple
Support forums and elsewhere. It was three weeks outside the one-year
warranty and the Apple Store would not cover it but they told me that
I could contact Apple Care over the case. I had them do a Depot Swap
which would have cost me about $325 back then. I agreed to the swap
(what choice did I have?) and then went back to the office to call
Apple Care. I argued with a customer service representative, and then
spoke to his manager and got them to cover the cost of the swap. Of
course they hadn't diagnosed the problem nor the fix at that time so
the replacement board failed a year later.
A few months after the board swap, Apple identified the problem and
the fix and they extended the warranty to three years for that
problem. Recently they extended it for four years - they are fixing
my almost four-year-old MacBook Pro which has started to Black Screen.
They also announced that they would reimburse the cost for those that
paid for depot repairs. BTW, this was in the US. My understanding is
that it wasn't always handled as well outside of the US.
I do think that it depends on who you get at the Genius Bar. The guy
that I dealt with last time and yesterday basically took my word on
the problems with the two laptops. He didn't turn them on; he didn't
run any diagnostics - he just looked up the new part and said they'd
do the swap. On my system, he just looked at the model number and said
okay.
There may be multiple workarounds to specific problems but it seems to
me that everyone that has had a board swap has had their problems
resolved - at least until that board started failing again (in our
case, two months later). I'd suggest calling AppleCare to see if you
can get them to cover the depot repair. It won't cost you anything but
your time. If you're a little bit outside the one-year warranty
timeframe, they might give you a break.
I do feel that this is a hardware issue and think that they will
eventually reimburse the depot repair charges. If you get the old
part, you might have to go through this again.

Oct 28, 2011 7:01 AM in response to Michael Moy2by nps999,Thanks. I took your advice and called them today. I spoke to a supervisor who was very sympathetic and pleasant. He said he would have the computer tested again at the depot for the problem, as thoroughly as possible to see if anything was overlooked. If it turns out my computer is covered under the service update, they would cover it. But he obviously couldn't guarantee that would be the case--it depends on the outcome of their testing. It's not an ideal outcome (yet), but I am at least feeling confident that they are taking the problem seriously. If, when, I have updates, I'll post.

Oct 28, 2011 7:37 AM in response to ManagerJoshby UCLAMacConvert,So far, so good. But if I do BSOD, I doubt your solution would help. I had a completely separate partition which I did clean installs of 10.7.0, 10.7.1, and 10.7.2 (not an upgrade from Snow Leopard, clean installs from the Lion installer for each build) and it would BSOD on command. I wouldn't even put one other piece of software on it, just Lion straight from the installer.
ManagerJosh wrote:
UCLAMacConvert - if you're still having issues after the BSOD, backup your drive, and delete your entire hard drive partition. From there, just ask your Apple Store to image your drive with a server install of Lion.
It should take no more than 15 minutes to do.
It should resolve the issue.
For those who are having trouble with Apple Store geniuses recognizing your problem, my recommendation is to call the tech support number from that knowledgebase if your Mac qualifies (i.e. you are experiencing the exact problems described in the kb, and you have a 2010 Macbook Pro).
The phone tech support guys gave me zero hassle and as soon as I referenced the kb, they were right on it. I knew how to get to the kernel panic logs and once I was elevated to Tier 2 phone support, I directly emailed my panic logs to the tech. NVDAResman is your friend (that's been the backtrace culprit in all of my BSODs and likely all of the ones that are affected by this bug). It was phone tech support who authorized my logic board replacement and set up my Genius Bar appointment. They also offered direct mailing to the Repair Depot but since I live 2 miles from my nearest Apple Store I chose the Genius Bar route. When I got to the Genius Bar the guy there pulled up my case record, asked me about a half dozen questions, then also looked at my panic log (including the most recent one after I had installed the Macbook Pro Video Update 1.0 which was supposed to fix the problem) and then said "yep, looks like a logic board replacement is in order" and took my machine. The longest part of the whole transaction was waiting for my appointment because the store was crazy busy.

Oct 28, 2011 7:48 AM in response to UCLAMacConvertby Michael Moy2,Good advice from UCLAMacConvert .
When we first had this problem, my son gave the Genius the exception routines and offsets - he rattled them off from memory. I don't believe that they bothered testing the machine that time either.

Oct 28, 2011 8:00 AM in response to whetty101by hjp.on.ca,I have had this problem for months and have been waiting for Apple's response. I installed Apple's published update and it seems to have resolved the issue. It's been almost a week of smooth sailing. Let's hope I haven't spoken too soon.

My mac is exactly the model referenced in their post.

Oct 28, 2011 8:15 AM in response to whetty101by karlfromdeathvalley,I just had my logic board replaced. Tested in the store and could crash it instantly via the photo booth trick. I took it home nevertheless and installed the new Video update. Thought it works now.. but after about 20 minutes: CRASH!

I don't know if it is going to fix the issue completely, but the Genius did mention that it is a new part and is why it needs to be special ordered. Here is the part number on my invoice: 661-6362
I'm still waiting for it to come in.

Start Photo Booth and go to the second effects page. Then it should crash instantly.. or not.
That trick works only if the new update is not installed.

Oct 28, 2011 12:39 PM in response to Chris1973by feraiedoon,Hi
yesterday I was in sydia for in a few minutes but suddenly my phone was shut and black screen without any response.would you please tell me how can I do for repair?
-
Oct 28, 2011 1:48 PM in response to Mondo Generatorby tool,I have found now on two occasions that when i get the black screen (only happened to me when i open the lid from sleep)...my keyboard is still back lit, CAPS LOCK still lights up, however, on two repeat occasions when this happened, i found that if i hit the brightness DOWN button, the screen immediately lights up. Sounds strange to hit the brightness down button when the screen brightness is already down, but i am 100% positive that it works immediately and the screen will come back.
I know probably 85% of the people who are experiencing the black screen are all using computers around the mid 2010 to mid 2011 range...but i know i'm not the only one using a 17" MacBook Pro (Mid-2009) that is having this problem, and it has only been since the installation of Lion.
So whether it is a software glitch from Lion, or a more serious problem that needs repaired, Apple needs to address everybody with the appropriate solution.
-
Oct 29, 2011 2:00 AM in response to toolby giannisfromkomotini,11 hours have passed since i installed the latest back up refering to black screen problems so untill now my MBP works fine.
Might that be the solution. If so then i have to admit they did a **** good job in APPLE.
