Nov 6, 2011 11:28 AM in response to whetty101by minh hieu,Hi everyone, I have gone with this topic since the day it was started, and I have gone to Genius Bar for at least 7 times, last time I had a logicboard replacement but when I received my mac, its mute button was not functional then the guy said it needed to be replaced with a new topcase and it took about 2 weeks for the job to be done. I am very disappointed and tired of upgrading to Lion. It does not bring me any satisfaction but angry, I bought an AppleCare for 3 years, has anyone here heard about the exchange or something the rule of 3 major repairs equal a new mac?Apple please help me

Nov 6, 2011 1:23 PM in response to minh hieuby Michael Moy2,My son commented that his MacBook Pro runs cooler after the board replacement. I told him that they probably did a better job on the thermal paste - a frequent Apple issue which results in MBPs running too hot.
I had this issue after my own board swap. I found the fans running a lot faster and making more noise so I brought it back and they fixed the thermal paste issue overnight. It now runs better than ever.
I've taken my MacBook Pro apart before (2008-era) and it is a fairly big pain to work in such tight quarters. I imagine that missing a connector or taping something down can get missed. It shouldn't happen but people aren't perfect.

Nov 6, 2011 3:49 PM in response to whetty101by FunkyDrug,Hi All -
I have a mid-2010 macbook pro, I had the similar BSOD problem before, controlling via gfxcardstatus. I am running Mac OSX Lion v2.7.2. I installed the video update a week before and it was cruising fine till today when it did the BSOD during waking from sleep. It did restart unexpectedly and came back with a "Problem Report for Mac OSX" window which basically states kernel panic and has nvidia listed in it.
I am a bit cautious that Apple might dismiss my case, however, I want to prepare the best before I go to genius bar. I am planning to show them following documents.
1. Knowledgebase article TS4086
2. Software uopdate log confirming that MacBook Pro Video Update 1.0 was installed
3. Screenshot of "Problem Report for Mac OSX" window which basically states kernel panic and lists nvidia
4. Actual kernel panic found in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports
I want to know if above documentation will be sufficient for Apple to provide me a logic board replacement?
My actual kernel panic is below, can anybody suggest if it is actually still the problem related to video drivers?
Thanks

Nov 6, 2011 6:09 PM in response to FunkyDrugby JJCBKK,I had a very similar experience.
- 15" mid-2010 MacBook Pro
- Had very occasional BSODs under Snow Leopard.
- Upgraded to Lion as soon as it was released
- Had BSODs all the time (unless controlled with gfxCardStatus)
- Downgraded to Snow Leopard
- When TS4088 came out, upgraded to Lion again and installed Apple's fix
- No crashes for 10 days.
- Yesterday had a BSOD
- Today had another
- Same kernel panic as you
-
Nov 6, 2011 8:06 PM in response to JJCBKKby FunkyDrug,Have you tried contacting Apple Geniusbar, any luck?
-
Nov 6, 2011 10:08 PM in response to JJCBKKby kartchen,Same here.... thought after the update I could be free of those BSOD problems.... and ready to leave this forum.... but today it happened again!! after a sleep, it woke up fine for a couple minutes and then died.
Seems Apple's patch can only decrease the frequency, but not a cure.....

@Smartie777
Sorry, there is no FMS Computer in Hamburg.
Here you can find the different stores :

Could you please describe what you were doing as the crash happened again?
Installed the video patch too and after one week it does not happen so far.
Cheers

Nov 7, 2011 3:39 AM in response to FunkyDrugby JJCBKK,I'm in Thailand, where unfortunately we do not have any Genius Bar. I've talked to Apple's authorized service provider here, but they say they cannot do anything without keeping it for some indeterminate amount of time. I don't really want to be computerless for an extended period.
@Diedel
I wasn't doing anything special. Just web browsing with Chrome, I think. Mine worked fine for a week too, but the crashes are getting increasingly frequent (one yesterday, two today).

Nov 7, 2011 5:04 AM in response to whetty101by Adel Sabry,I guess the problem in my case is not a hardware issue, it is a software bug. cause I didn't suffer from any problems on 10.6.8 , it only showed up after 10.7. and here is the solution.
BSOD solved with the MacBook Pro video update 1.0, But then I had BBOD at login screen.
BBOD Solved ( Kernel Panic Login screen crash ) by disabling Automatic graphic Switching in system preferences.
All working now, on external and internal display.. All OK, but Auto Switching causes the problem.
Also you choose " Discrete Only " gfxcardstatus application ... it ensures that the integrated will not be switched on again...

Nov 7, 2011 6:06 AM in response to whetty101by sspm,Nowadays I'm getting this instead of the instant blank. Five times today.
All the problem I have faced so far is as described in TS4088 but AASP says is not related at all!! I wondered how reliable their tools is in determining the problem. As advise by people in the forum, I have recorded videos showing the BSOD and the warning messages before BSOD. I'm gonna call up Apple and seek justice. -
Nov 7, 2011 2:03 PM in response to whetty101by elenkos,I getting sick of this... Lion keeps crashing and crashing.. even after the update...
It is making me lose my time and my money.

Nov 7, 2011 3:29 PM in response to whetty101by jbrodley,I have a mid 2010 pro that has been crashing since launch of 10.7.2. Installed the update and was hoping it would resolve the problem but still crashed. No issue with it if i keep it in integrated only when on battery, or when using the external monitor on dynamic, but if it autoswitches it will crash everytime.
Had a phone call with APple Support before the official KB was out, and gave them all my details and have been waiting. Finally took it the Mac store on Friday, and they ran the hardware test but it didn't fail, but the Genius hadn't heard or seen the problem before, and took my word for it that it was still a problem and they are replacing my Logic Board at no charge.
Crossing my fingers that this will finally fix this issue!! -
Nov 7, 2011 5:40 PM in response to jbrodleyby FunkyDrug,I have just talked to Apple Phone support. It was good of them that they did entertain my call as I am out of warranty as I pointed out TS4088 article number. The support guy did listen to my problem and did do a couple of things (trashed "caches" folder in /Library folder) and asked me to restart the mac holding down cmd+option+p+r. Beyond that, all he said was to schedule an appointment with Genius bar which he helped me with and gave me the case number. I am going to the Genius bar tomorrow with that case number, now I guess it is all upto the Genius bar and what they think after they run their diagnostic test.
Any suggestions to convince the genius bar for logic board replacement?
Thanks!
