Aug 6, 2011 12:07 PM in response to whetty101by Anthony-,I'm having the same issue. MBP mid 2010 i5. Black screen everytime I unplug an USB port (mouse, iphone cable...) while the laptop is closed.
Already done a full erase of the HDD and a proper install of Lion.

Aug 6, 2011 12:28 PM in response to eeblackby pp-17,I don't think the Nvidia-hypotheses suffices to explain the problem.
1) I have a (very new) MPB with an AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card.
2) I used the gfxCardStatus trick to switch it to internal mode.
3) I do not have any of the windowserver files in my ~/Library/...
So I have a different graphics card, I used all the tricks that were suggested.
And the problem is still there. I have between 2 and 10 crashes per day.
Are there any other ideas?

Aug 6, 2011 12:47 PM in response to Anthony-by mayte_eme,i'm having the same issue. i've been with apple support for over a week and no luck. we did a hard drive reset, reinstalled lion twice (second time was a clean install) and still having the problem.
the apple guy sent me a data capture file which i ran and sent back to him so hopefully, that'll be of some help.
i haven't done a wipe-out of my hard drive yet but have heard it's not of much help

Aug 6, 2011 1:07 PM in response to whetty101by verbaL123,So it has been 4 hours of testing my laptop since Apple replaced my logic board (and some connector) and no black screens of death. It seems my issue was hardware.
If I was to theorize, I am guessing I had a sub-optimal GPU that could handled Snow Leopard (never had an issue), but could not handle Lion. I was told by Apple that Lion stresses the GPU significantly more.
My laptop is a
MacBook Pro mid 2010
Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7 (11A511)

Aug 6, 2011 1:39 PM in response to whetty101by Big Rik,This happened a few times for me - I'm running a 2011 i7 (Sandy Bridge) iMac; we've had this iMac for three weeks now and the last (4th time) it happened was about a week ago. Everything seems to be OK now, though.

Aug 6, 2011 4:00 PM in response to whetty101by bitpuddle,Have you tried going into the Energy Saver control panel and setting it to always use the integrated graphics (use less energy)? There are a lot of reports of issues with the Nvidia video and Lion.
Really, you should open an issue with Apple. Someone needs to take a look at the crash report from your MacBook to determine what caused the crash.

Aug 6, 2011 6:05 PM in response to whetty101by Hunter Dendy,Same problem here too. Macbook Pro mid 2010 i7 2.66 330M. It hasn't been consistent when it crashes, but happens 4 or 5 times a day. A few times it has crashed upon opening app store. I really liked Lion at first, but starting to regret it now since this macbook is my work production computer. Hoping for an update fix soon. If not I may take it in to see if I can get a logic board replacement.

Aug 6, 2011 6:07 PM in response to whetty101by al_varus,So, after replacing the logic board didn't change anything. I'm here again in the Apple Store. The only option they offer me is going back to SL or wait until the issue is fixed by Apple and run gfxcardstatus in the meantime.
Decided to go back to SL. Will try to see if I can reproduce the issue in front of them in SL. Then go home and cry

please let us know if it happens again on SL.

Aug 7, 2011 12:33 AM in response to al_varusby wired00,There is another option. Replace the machine obviously not all machines experience this issue. My work mate has the identical machine and has never crashed. Which is why I've always assumed hardware issue made worse by a driver issue in lion. IMO you should be asking for a new machine if they are stumped. Rolling back to sl or using integrated is NOT as satisfactory outcome.
