I also note the developer of gfxCardStatus has developed this for free. It this is a fix, we should send him some $$ and maybe he will do an update to software. That assumes of course that dollars are still worth more than paper in the coming days, given this economy
I threw him a few bucks right after everyone started realising "integrated" helped. I'd been using gfxcardstatus for ages previously anyway though because i liked integrated mode on battery to conserve power

Aug 9, 2011 4:47 PM in response to wired00by Wraith_Commander,I'm not sure what my case is, but forcing the Intel graphics doesn't seem to have any effect. It will still crash waking from sleep. However, forcing the discrete eliminates most problems. It will still however crash after awhile if I'm playing something GPU intensive like AC2.

Aug 9, 2011 11:15 PM in response to HarryWesslingby HarryWessling,After deleting WINDOWSERVER... and NVIDEA Update ths system runs well for several days. I did not connect the 27" Cinema. After connecting 27" Cinema and working again without, the system crashes again.
So, problem is not solved by suggested solutions. Apple has to solve the problem in LION.

Aug 10, 2011 1:01 AM in response to HarryWesslingby nickk2,Oh I love you Lion. I am by no means forced to use my Windows 7 bootcamp partition instead of your awesome self.
Honestly, I bought this 27" iMac so that I could enjoy Lion's flawless stability, and I'm glad I got it.

My favorite part, is that my favorite feature of Mac OS right now, is the ability/setting for Mac to automatically reboot itself on a crash. Seriously, if I had to hold the power button on the back of the system 34 times (shut down and reboot for each crash) over the course of two days, I probably would have just set my computer on fire.
But, today is unusual, normally I try to fit in at least 10 crashes per week (since Lion's release), so I'm at a high point right now having had 17 crashes in two days.

Aug 10, 2011 7:50 AM in response to whetty101by lover of mac,im having the same problem as well. over the weekend i had 3 problems with mine: 1 when i awoke it from sleep screen was black, and everything else was powered on, i had to do a hard shut down by holding the power button. 2 when i shut it down, it trys to shut down but just loops and refuses to shut down forcing me to hold the power button, 3 when i turned it on, i heard the chime but the screen didnt come on until 15 seconds later.
Apple PLEASE FIX this issue

Aug 10, 2011 8:26 AM in response to whetty101by slawder,Since installing the updated CUDA driver 2 days ago I've had about 6 crashes. They seem to be getting more and more frequent.
One thing I've noticed is that every time mine crashes its with a hotcorner activation of Mission Control. The same action will work fine for hours, then all of a sudden I go to do it and boom.
I've also been trying to stress the system out for the faulty logic board / Lion overload / system taxing theory and haven't found it to be true. I've had Parallels, Photoshop, Illustrator, iTunes, Time Machine, TextMate, 15+ chrome tabs and more open at once and it hasn't crashed. It only (randomly) does it when I hot corner -> mission control.
I also have had gfxcardstatus set to discrete since I switched over. I had no crashes for over a couple weeks while I was on integrated only, but I needed my extra monitor back.

Aug 10, 2011 8:49 AM in response to whetty101by greygordon,After the upgrade Lion found an old printer that I thought I had removed from Snow Leopard. Not only found it but was saying that it was on-line (bit tricky as it had been binned months ago). Removed this printer from the list and my machine only hangs up every couple of hours now instead of every 5 minutes. Particularly noticeable if I have 2 users open and am switching between them. May be a clue to someone.

Aug 10, 2011 1:29 PM in response to whetty101by Lojik,I too am suffering this or a similar issue. My screen and input devices become disabled (unable to issue commands like save or quit from the keyboard), however, sound output still functions as does networking (streaming online video continues to play).
My hardware setup consists of a MacPro (early 2008) upgraded with a Radeon 5870 and an attached 27" LED Cinema Display. I have both Mac OS X 10.7 and also bootcamp with WinVista, they are installed on separate drives.
It occurred just once under 10.6.8 and I figured it was some strange anomaly at the time and thought no more of it.
Since installing 10.7 the problem has grown in frequency, initially I had no issue for several days. Now it is happening more and more. Having tried to identify the cause by noting what was running at the time it occurred, the only thing that seems common in each case is the use of the graphics driver in some fashion. Safari with flash plug-in active, VLC playing video or even the system screensaver running, and other similar scenarios.
I develop software using Xcode, and although I cannot recall for certainty, I think this problem only started to occur after creating an OpenGL context that uses the 3.2 pixel format attributes introduced in 10.7. I wonder if having enabled this profile has generated or modified some configuration that has affected the driver in general. As I said, I cannot be certain of this, it may simply be coincidence.
What I do know for sure is that immediately after it happens, the graphics card slots at the back of the machine are very hot to the touch, including the mini-display port cable (unfortunately I don't have a GPU temperature monitor installed). Therefore, it seems to me -- as I have seen some others in this discussion have noted -- that the graphics driver in Lion is not controlling the cooling of the card appropriately, which results in the card being disabled to prevent damage.
Booting to the WinVista drive and running with various software to stress the GPU does not duplicate the problem under Windows where the ATi Catalyst driver controls the temperature faultlessly.
In short, it seems that the graphics drivers under Lion need to be revised to resolve this issue.

Aug 10, 2011 9:53 PM in response to whetty101by Endareth,A logic board replacement on my MBP 2010 seems to have fixed things for me, making me think that a purely software based "fix" is only likely to be a workaround (such as underclocking a chip). I'll post back again in a few days with any update. I strongly recommend anyone else who can reproduce this issue on a clean Lion install go straight to your Apple store and request a logic board swap.

Aug 11, 2011 1:36 AM in response to whetty101by Peakmop,Same to my MBP 2010, logic board replacement solves the problem. No more black screens. System works stable as before.

Aug 11, 2011 2:07 AM in response to whetty101by jamecs,Yes, same issue here, brand new 17" 2.3Ghz Macbook Pro, crashing all day long like it ain't no thang.
Looks like i'm going to have to try and get a logic board replacement out of my applecare. Great.
I upgraded first time to Lion because I thought that first release software issues were confined to other manufacturers... Disappointed.

Aug 11, 2011 3:29 AM in response to whetty101by Conrad1234,So..... logic board replacement. How much is that going to cost me, 2 months out of applecare?
-
Aug 11, 2011 3:43 AM in response to Conrad1234by derBonsaii,i think that you don't have to pay, because as you can see, there is no hardware problem, and when, it's a problem of Apple/Nvidia
after installing an old OS, there are nomore problems
when i talked to a superior of Apple he told me that i can change my logic board for free.
i bought my Mbp @ 24. of April, 2010, so i have also nomore warranty.
I should get new informations today or tomorrow about this problem.
