Aug 11, 2011 7:32 PM in response to fausto87by pope123,Fausto87,
I was wondering when you say the apple engineer was its someone at the apple store or else where, becuase my MBP 2010 is constantly crashing (not to mention running hot causing deminished battery life) so I wanted to take it in and see if they could replace mine as well. I have called Apple and their only suggested solution was to reinstall Lion which as we have seen in pervious posts and actually reinstalling, doesn't work.

Aug 11, 2011 7:37 PM in response to pope123by fausto87,I never spoke to an engineer. I spoke to a store person but I feel like I was at the most unkind (very rare for Apple) Apple store in the world so that was unhelpful. I only spoke to the support folks on the phone. They said they weren't sure what to do, they submitted my information to the engineers (what that means exactly, I'm not sure), two days later they told me they wanted bring in my machine for inspection and that they were aware of the issue and were doing research. I guess since there's such a minority of us (in comparison to the full population of MBP 2010 owners) they're pulling in some machines to figure out what it is and at least say for certain what is wrong. I don't imagine they'll start replacing machines on a large scale anytime soon, if ever. The point is - it's not like they're ignoring us.

Aug 12, 2011 8:01 AM in response to pope123by Enzo90910,Update: my MBP 2010 which until now had just suffered a few GUI freezes (5 in a month) now has done so 5 times in a row, the four last at the login screen. It was runnign especially warm at that time. Letting it cool down 5 minutes seems to have bought me some time, but this is extremely distressing when one has to work.

Aug 12, 2011 8:44 AM in response to whetty101by SanctionOne,Try this...
UPDATE: A commenter noted that Apple Care support technicians have offered another solution which appears to have permanently solved the problem on his machine. Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/, delete any files that contain "windowserver," and reboot the machine. The procedure may need to be repeated if you regularly connect to an external monitor once it is also connected.
Note that the user Library folder is hidden by default on Lion. You can get to it by holding down the Option key in the Finder's Go menu, use the Go To Folder command and paste in the full path, or use Terminal to make your ~/Library folder permanently visible.

Aug 12, 2011 9:05 AM in response to SanctionOneby Ian Kelleigh,@SanctionOne: That doesn't do anything.
Also an update... I'm starting to think that it is more of a hardware issue and that Lion makes firmware updates to the motherboard or graphics card or both during the install.
Today I was messing around in my Windows 7 Boot Camp partition and for the first time since I've had this install, it exhibited the exact same black screen lock up in Windows 7 where I had to force restart the system.

Aug 12, 2011 11:59 AM in response to whetty101by dschamis,I brought my 2010 MBP to the 5th Ave - NYC - Genius Bar today. Firstly the genius told me that she hadn't seen this before and that no one else in the store had either. When we booted up it took about 45 seconds to get a crash - all we had to do was open Safari. Then she booted in to Safe Mode. That did not lead to a crash no matter how much we tried, although the system was running pretty slowly.
She concluded that this therefore must be a software rather than a hardware issue. I showed her this thread.
She kept the computer and said that Apple would wipe the HD and do a full clean install and would stress test the machine before they give it back to me.
Lets see how that goes.

Aug 12, 2011 2:38 PM in response to dschamisby wired00,Yet another incorrect assumption by apple. It is not software. Anyone preparing to take their machine to apple should try these steps to produce a crash:
these have been stated *many* times within this thread
1) Load photo booth. Click effects. Click the 2nd tab of effects. This should force A kernel panic.
2) open a directory with many files to be previewed such as documents. Click a file then click space bar to open quick view. Click hr up and down arrow keys quickly to flick through preview documents. This will cause a kernel panic ASAP.
Many people can reproduce a crash this way. Follow these steps if you crash print this post now before you lose it and have it stuck to your machine when you take to apple. Also make sure to test while In safe mode. To do tha hold shift while booting.
ALSO if you have a spare external Harddrive install lion fresh onto it by rebooting while holding down command + R. hold it till you see the apple logo and then mac os x utilities. You should have plugged in your external hdd before booting. Now click "reinstall mac os x". This will reeks load lion from the app store. Choose your external hdd for install source.
Once installed it should crash just like before do not install any software take it to apple and askthem to please explain how THAT is possibly a software issue. Apple support asked me to follow all these steps.
Do not allow apple to waste your time. You need to follow these steps to show them the issue is not what you have installed.
I hope this helps.

Aug 12, 2011 3:01 PM in response to wired00by wired00,Ugh... I stupidly decided i could get through that post on my iphone. I obviously couldn't without errors and it wouldn't let me edit even right after i posted it.
This line: "This will reeks load lion from the app store. Choose your external hdd for install source."
Should be: "This will re-download lion from the app store. Choose your external hdd for install source."
PS: Also over the phone by following all those steps apple 2nd level support came to the conclusion it was a hardware fault and that i should take my machine to have the logic board replaced. I'm still finishing a project and will do when I have time...

Aug 12, 2011 3:20 PM in response to wired00by BuckoSthlm,Thanks for the post, My MB crashes on the effects 2nd tab to, but following your post I tested in Safe mode but the camera is not active (and my screen refreshes really slow), can you reproduce the photo booth crash in safe mode?
I will try the clean install on separate hd/usd later.
Thanks.

Aug 12, 2011 5:47 PM in response to wired00by dschamis,Wired00 - The Genius said that Apple would give it a full graphics test before they return it. When I pick it up I will also do the test you suggest. Luckily I'm about to take a 1 week trip to Asia (where I planned to bring my MBAir anyway) so luckily they aren't wasting my time at this point. They may be wasting their own.

Aug 12, 2011 6:21 PM in response to whetty101by Paul Ford,Just picked up macbook pro left at Apple Store for diagnostics 24 hours.
Absolutely no hardware problems found, including extensive video card testing.
Apple believes this is a software problem - ? Lion, ? other third party software
I guess I'll limp along using integrated only on gfxCardStatus - tried above suggestions but have not re-installed Lion or wiped disk. macbook pro/2010/15in/2.66 i7/8 GB

Aug 12, 2011 7:35 PM in response to Paul Fordby Endareth,If the techs at the Apple store are being unhelpful in this way, call Apple directly and ask for Customer Service. Explain that this is happening on a clean install of Lion, and that you'd like to speak to a senior consultant. Tell them about this thread on the Apple Discussions forum, and that a logic board replacement seems to be the only way to fix this issue. That may be enough for them to ok repairs at no charge. If so, make sure to get there name and a direct number, along with a case number. Go to a different Apple store (not worth the hastle of dealing with idiots again), and explain what Apple consultant has agreed to. With any luck, this will get things sorted.
Note, you must be able to reproduce this on a clean install of Lion to be able to prove it's a hardware issue.
Good luck!

Aug 12, 2011 7:43 PM in response to BuckoSthlmby Endareth,Incidentally, testing in Safe Mode is pointless, as this mode is specifically designed to get the computer up and running with minimal drivers or hardware usage. It's like testing a car by putting it in neutral and gently rolling down a slope! If you hit a support tech who seems to think Safe Mode is a good full test of the machine, find another store.
The hardware diagnostics they run is better, but it's by no means complete. Easy enough to think of plenty of possible hardware failures that wouldn't get picked up by it. All it proves is that the specific components tested respond correctly to the test. It's s good first step, and picks up some common failure points, but that's it.
The best way to demo this crash is with a completely clean install of Lion (you can even just do this to an 8GB flash drive), then follow wired00's steps above (especially Photobooth as the easiest method).
