Aug 16, 2011 1:25 PM in response to whetty101by mhmmccoy-n,Here are two more things of note related to this problem, now that I have started paying attemtion to what my new Mac is doing (while trying deperately to finish work on my old Mac).
First, when it "blacks out", it always seems to be associated with the screensaver running and my moving the Magic Mouse. Second, even though I have NOT checked "automatic restart" for a crash (and I am not allowing any "sleep", either), it restarts itself.
I am going to turn the screensaver off and see what happens. Then I am also going to try using a good old wired mouse and see if that makes a difference. (I once had kernal errors because of a bad mouse, believe it or not, so maybe...)

Aug 16, 2011 1:58 PM in response to whetty101by Leime,Hmm, so far so good after the update. No crashes untill now, even with gfxcardstatus put back to autoswitching. However most problems occured when connecting to an external screen and I can't test that untill tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed ...

Aug 16, 2011 1:58 PM in response to imacx87by UCLAMacConvert,Well knock on wood. Just downloaded 10.7.1 (which is the smallest x.x.1 increment as far as file size that I've ever seen, usually they're in the hundreds of MB or more) so this tells me it was a targeted fix for stability and not what they usually consider a x.x.1 upgrade. To me this is the closest Apple will come to admitting they released an unstable .0 build and just remedied it in .1.
Anyway, I've turned off gfxcardstatus, enabled auto graphics switching, rebooted my machine, started Chrome, went to multiple sites to push the load, then did my ultimate test: I loaded up the 4-5 Powerpoint presentations between 20-50 slides and held down the arrow up/down keys to quickly scroll through them. In the past this was the surefire way to cause a BSOD. So far...so good!
Keeping my fingers crossed, but I'm hoping this did the trick.

Aug 16, 2011 2:01 PM in response to whetty101by mhmmccoy-n,Bad news. No black screen fix with 10.7.1. I'm going back to the "turn off screensaver-replace the magic mouse" tests before I dump this crappy problem in my local Apple service provider's lap.

Aug 16, 2011 2:11 PM in response to whetty101by Shorrockin,Just throwing my 2 cents in into the fire.
For me the 10.7.1 did not resolve the problem. Recently I've been mitigating the issue by starting gfxCardStatus, going to Descrete Mode, noting whch apps are listed as dependencies, and not running those (after which swithing to Integrated Only mode) - for me this includes:
- Google Chrome
- Flash
- Divvy
After upgrading to 10.7.1 I booted and started Twitter, Divvy then went to youtube.com using Chrome, and within 20 seconds my screen went black and I had to reboot.
Using the mitigation strategy above I can cut my crashes down from to 2-3 a day. With that said, I may need to take a day off work to downgrade, or a few days to attempt to get the logic board replaced.

Aug 16, 2011 2:12 PM in response to mhmmccoy-nby warbster, well no suprise there, I have been running 10.7.2 for the last month and get BSOD all the time. This is def a driver issue nvidia and apple really need to sort this, not the usual quality we expect when using pro products, but I guess apple is busy at the mo

Aug 16, 2011 2:30 PM in response to whetty101by Candido Tomás,With Mac OS X 10.7 I have had many problems with black screens and frozen screens that need a hard restart, followed by a new startup after 10-15 min (otherwise it will gray-freeze at startup)
Today updated to 10.7.1 and when opening a PowerPoint it went black again. Frustrating…

Aug 16, 2011 2:30 PM in response to whetty101by Ben Decker,10.7.1 did NOT fix my black screen issue. Mine still crashes when going to 2nd page of effects on Photo Booth
I had my hopes up!

Aug 16, 2011 2:40 PM in response to whetty101by verbaL123,It has been over a week and my computer still has no black screens of death. The reason is I recieved a new logic board.
My computer is a mid 2010 macbook pro i7 nvidia 330.
This seems to be the only thing that fixes this issue based on all the posts to this discussion thread.
