Aug 18, 2011 5:02 PM in response to whetty101by WalkerParis,Bought a new iMac in May 2011. Installed Lion, got Kernel Panics. Updated to 10.7.1, still have not resolved the issue. I called the tech support, advsing me to reinstall Lion, I did and I still have Kernel Panic.
I am thinking to downgrade to Snow Leopard.

I'm right there with you. Seems some things work for others and some don't. Right now I rely to heavily on my machine to leave it in the hands of someone to find out I have to take it back in again and again. Also I have a Boot Camp partition and don't want to lose it after I realized that WinClone doesn't work with Lion wich makes things even stickier should Apple decide to reformat and/or replace the whole machine.
I'm willing to wait it out a little longer. My current setup works for a few days at a time. I have Discrete Only active and have reset PRAM, SMC, used the beta version of Onyx to do some housecleaning and so far things are humming along fine with an external display... as long as I avoid certain things I know will cause a lock up.

Aug 18, 2011 5:53 PM in response to Pmultaniby wired00,@ Pmultani, i agree its unprofessional how the geniuses deal with customers.
I suggest you firstly call up apple support and get through to a 2nd level support. Go through all their hoops because it seems (based on people in this forum) they are more consistant with diagnosis. They'll probably get you to follow these steps:
- fully upgrade
- try running in safe mode and see if it helps (restart holding shift)
- possibly restart with disk and run exhaustive hardware test program (it will find no problems...)
- reinstall lion. I was told to try reinstalling to an external USB hdd (via restart > hold command + R > reinstall Lion > choose target of USB HDD). Once updated do not install any external software. Once this is all done and your still no doubt experiencing KP's THEN they will confirm it is a hardware problem and they will mark against your case number that its a harware issue and the MB requires replacing.
Steps to produce the crash (other than just randomly while surfing etc)
- goto a documents directory. When running on an external install of lion i nagivate in finder to my internal HDD documents, click space bar and flick through files using the arrow keys = kernel panic created.
- load photo booth, click effects, click 2nd page of effects = kernel panic created.

Aug 18, 2011 10:51 PM in response to wired00by James_Tin,Hi,
I had tooken the MBP, 2010Mid, 2.8G i7, 8G RAM, 256G SSD, and with the
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB to Apple Store in Beijing, China last weekend, the genius just say they never recieved the problem reports before but they can replace the logic board for me. I got back the MBP after 4 days as they replaced the logic board and downsize the CPU to 2.66G, but the crashes and black screen had resolved.
They changed back the CPU to 2.8G i7 for me after I showed them the CTO order and take me one more days waiting. I am sure they had covered the crashes and black screen problem but not perfect, I can got the whit screen for 1 second or more when I restart the notebook again just after the "apple" Logo gone. I am nto sure this is another problem. I had opened the notebook for 2 days and didnot get crashes problem one time.
I am hoping every one had the style MBP or got the same problem to go to the Apple Store to replace the Logic Board and enjoy your MBP again and constantly.

Aug 19, 2011 1:30 AM in response to whetty101by JazzArabat,Hey guys, i'm also having problems with my MacBook Pro, but it's a mid 2009 model. After upgrading to Lion, it started giving me problems with the Airport, showing ''No Hardware Found''. Inmediately after, the computer freezes. Now, when i turn on, the screen keeps black, but the little ''sleeping'' light stays on and nothing happens. .
I don't know what to do, because i live in Dominican Republic, and there's no Apple Store in here, and if i got it send it to them, it will take a lot of time. My specs:
''13 MacBook Pro
2.26 GHz
8 GB Ram
9400M nVidia Graphic Card

Aug 19, 2011 1:49 AM in response to whetty101by stovesy,Same.
Mid 2010 M15" Macbook Pro.
Stable as rock under 10.6
Black Screen of Death randomly under Lion.
To sum up a nice long call to Apple tech support:
Probably a third party software issue.
(Wow - the window manager of the worlds most advanced desktop OS can be felled by dodgy software ???)Fresh install: Backup docs. Re-partition. Install Snow Leopard. Software upgrades.
Lion upgrade. Software updates.
Things seem a little better (Only one crash)
I'm very wary of installing and running non apple apps.
Weird. I thought I left this kind of stuff behind when I moved away from windows!

Aug 19, 2011 5:54 AM in response to whetty101by geoffreyalanholliday,FYI to those running the CUDA drivers and System Preferences control panel directly from NVIDIA...
There was a new CUDA update this morning.
4.0.50 is the update.
Now to see if this in any way alleviates this crashing issue...
-
Aug 19, 2011 11:29 AM in response to whetty101by Raytonium,@geoffreyalanholliday
I only see the CUDA 4.0.31, can you provide a link to 4.0.50? Thanks.

Aug 19, 2011 2:33 PM in response to whetty101by imacx87,I take my computer in service today. They told me the problem was the Kingston 128GB SSD in my computer. SSD faulty was the problem, but the SSD never failed in Snow Leopard before. I changed back my HDD to original one, and the computer is so perfect and stable. I didnt try with external monitor or magic mouse yet, but i think it will be okay because when it crashed before its stable now (the photo booth effects 2nd tab was ok too).
I think you should take your computer to service. I think its a common software issue which caused by hardware issue.

Aug 19, 2011 3:11 PM in response to Samson Sagayagaby Dave & Jo,Hi Samson - it might be worth uninstalling your Symantec Internet Security software. One of the guys on the forum took a look at my crash report and recommended a similar fix for me. So far so good but it's still early days to know if that has been the fix for my crashes. Cheers, Dave
-
Aug 19, 2011 3:22 PM in response to Dave & Joby Samson Sagayaga,Thanks Dave & Jo!
It is kind of mind boggling to even think something totally unrelated (yeah, I know where its headed) can have an adverse affect.
So I'm on my 3rd re-install of SL now. Don't really know how to work Time Machine but I know one thing, I'm the ditz who didn't back up before upgrading.
So now I'm upgrading from a Lion time machine file to Snow. Anyone got any tips on how I can get my old settings/info into Snow after I re-install it?
Is it as simple as drag and drop then just do disk first aid on the main drive?
-
Aug 19, 2011 3:36 PM in response to Samson Sagayagaby Dave & Jo,Is it worth moving your data into a single area and then restoring just data when you've reinstalled SL?
I'm sure there is a better way that others might suggest but if you're going to the trouble to reinstall the OS then you don't want to bring across all the various additional applications too. I'd reinstall additional apps from fresh.
Disk first aid is good but also try applejack - I was impressed with how good it was.

Aug 19, 2011 4:00 PM in response to Samson Sagayagaby martinfromeugene,Don't see why you can't use Migration Assistant. Boot into your new SL volume, connect the Lion volume (with Target Disk mode) and Migration Assistant can import your data.
