Ok... my mail folder was 11 GB ;-) It worked with that size on the leopard and snow leopard but by now it seems that lion can not manage that size.

I deleted almost the half of my emails, its now 6 GB and seems to work (no crash since 30 minutes ;-)

As I use my mac in the office its a pitty that I had to do that but by now it seems that this is the only way to solve the problem.

Remember to use the "delete finally" function (right mouse on the inbox)... otherwise the /library/mail folder becomes even bigger as before.

Good luck!

Found simple solution elsewhere on this blog that worked for me (and others)...

1. Right click on Finder icon in the Dock

2. Choose "Go to Folder" in the popup menu

3. Type in ~Library

4. Open the Mail folder(s) until you find the V2 folder

5. As opposed to what was recommended, I deleted all files and folders inside the V2 folder

(After all, gmail and iMobile have my mail history and details on file anyway)

6. Restarted MacBook to be sure

7. Started Mail and added my iMobile and gmail accounts... From there the normal world presented itself!

Another more simpler solution that I did NOT test myself is...

1. Open Applications in a Finder window and scroll to Mail

2. Right click on Mail then go to "Get Info" in the popup window

3. Unlock the lock at the bottom of the window by clicking on it (it will ask you for your password)

4. Go to "Access" and change it from "custom" to "read and write"

5. Restart Mail and it should work

Lion is proving disappointing. The advice never to take the first offer of a new OS seems very sensible!

Apart from my iMac apperaing to slow down, Mail crashes and freezes the iMac completely when I try to send Mail with attachments of any reasonable size. I have to restart the iMac.

Also Adobe Photoshop Bridge CS4 is prone to crash so I suspect this is something to do with handling large images and movies. A bit of a problem since I'm a photographer.
