Safari in Lion not displaying site's header copy...

Like in http://www.tuaw.com/

same w/ this site:http://macperformanceguide.com/index.html All header fonts shown w/ black and cap "A" symbol.

It's shows as rows of "blocks" w/ a cap "A" inside, looks like letter blocks lined up.

Firefox shows it fine, and the othe rmacs in the house are showing that page fine in Lion's Safari....?

I have the same problem. Alot of 'A',s in blocks. Font problem??

Not alone then. 🙂 I can say, I have never seen this before w/ any browser? It sure smacks of a font issue. You see the same when you go to the 2 sites I listed above? It's not a hyperlink thing because some of the smaller fonts are hyperlinked and they display correctly.

So far on these two pages it is the font family Myriad Pro which is not dsiplaying (Blocks w/ A in the middle shown instead). I have this font and firefox shows it fine... hope this helps the experts.

Capital A's in boxes usually means the System has lost track of the LucidaGrande System font.

Sometimes it's because of other Lucida fonts (L. fax, L. calligraphy, etc.) and there's a duplicate somewhere.

Or your Font Cache needs clearing. Here's what our resident Font expert, Kurt Lang, said about this:

A’s with boxes around them is always a sign of trouble with the main system

font, Lucida Grande.

Quick possible fix is to remove ALL font cache files from the system to see

if it's just bad cache data. For that, you need to use OnyX or other utility

which will remove both system and user cache files. A Safe Mode boot won't

work since it only removes cache data from the user account you do a safe

boot to.

If after that the problem returns, then Lucida Grande itself is damaged and

needs to be replaced.

I have not loaded on Lion yet, but for the past 5-6 years, this problem has been a symptom of System font confusion.

Ooops, spoke too soon. It worked on some of the pages that were probably cached but when I go to an entirely new page I still get the blocked A's.

I cleared the system and user font cache. Where can I get a new clean version of the LucidaGrande system font?

I just ran Cocktail for lion(beta). Did not work for me, still the block A's. SYT, could you load the pages I listed above(the font is not Lucia, it's myriad). Let me know. Thanks.

Thanks, SYT,

Holding my breath... downloaded the Lion version of Onyx. Ran the automation section and under "Cleaning" had all checked. Restarted, loaded Safari and the pages above .... drum roll.... no Blocked A's. So I think I'm fixed...?

I did that as well. Worked for a few sites, but then problem came back on pages that I don't normally visit.

I have a similar issue with a slight variation. All type seems to be replaced with the 'Last Resort' font in pages like Yahoo. If I log out and then log back in, Safari appears to work correctly and all fonts load as they should but when I quit Safari and then restart it, the problem returns. I'm not sure why logging out creates a temporary fix but it doesn't seem to stick. I recall this happening with Snow Leopard as well and I remember someone posting a fix although I believe that problem had to do with Helvetica Neue.

No problems w/ this page, SYT, for me. Cache cleaning, so far, seems to have worked for me. I have quit safari several times, and still no issues anymore...?

Why I was holding my breath...
Was doing something else, did another restart (have before) but now my "fix" (I knew not to make it "solved" yet) is gone(TUAW site and Mac Performace Guide pages had the A blocks).

John, I logged out and back in and the type on the sites were "fixed. So, I just reproduded what you have going on. SYT, that boxing site still has not given me problems.
