Another point I noticed is that the Wifi signal level seems really incorrect... once you connect to the router the signal level seems always much higher of what really is..

Oct 5, 2011 4:27 PM in response to DeimosLby Shivetya,Problem was with the length of the wireless encryption key using WPA2 Personal. The key I had been using was within the specs, worked fine on Windows, router, Airport Express and Time Capsule but not OK under SL. But it was OK sometimes. Often after startup it would fail but often if manually switched-off the back on it would work. When I changed the encryption key to be shorter (in my case down to 10 characters) it all worked fine. The intermittent nature suggested un--initialised memory so maybe something in Lion has brought out the problem.
I had a ten character password, phone number to the local pizza joint, and I still had problems under Lion. I went to twenty and it is less frequent so I am not all that sure its a password length issue. I have also tried the trick with setting any change to require a password but failed at least once since then.
I still need to test losing the connection and seeing the parallels sessions can connect.

Oct 5, 2011 4:45 PM in response to lrogersinlvby Uby,Ok my final thought. It's not only Lion and the Atheros card.
The router type is surely playing a role because my Lion setup which is completely stucked with the router I'm normally using becomes perfectly working if I connect the iMac i7 to the Wireless network created by the Hotspot function of my iPhone.
In this case the access to Internet is perfect and super fast.
Conclusion : Problem is happening with
Lion 10.7.x + Certain type of Atheros Card (definitely the AR9280 installed in my iMac) + certain type of router
This is at least narrowing the problem.
I'd like to have a survery of the Atheros card which are causing the problem.
Folr example the Atheros 5416 card in my older Macbook pro is not affected.

Oct 5, 2011 4:48 PM in response to Ubyby nipper123,Sorry to reasd that—now try this. Use the MacBook (which is working well under Lion) to share a WIRED Ethernet connection over wifi to the core i7 iMac that is having problems.
Do you get good connections?

Oct 5, 2011 5:20 PM in response to lrogersinlvby Uby,Hello Nipper,
thanks again for your support !!
unfortunately I cannot test your proposal because in my flat I have no Wired Ethernet connection.
I cannot access phisically the router and I get only the wireless signal...

Oct 5, 2011 5:23 PM in response to lrogersinlvby Uby,An awful workaround in my specific case would be to share the wifi Lion connection which is working perfectly on the Macbook by a WIRED Ethernet cable going to the iMac...
This would mean that I should always keep the 2 mac turned on to allow the iMac to access internet...
real crap !!

Did you use the OS X Lion built-in Wi-Fi Diagnostics application?
If you want to use it, do not use it on the machine with the problem if you want reliable reports about the wireless.

Oct 6, 2011 7:38 AM in response to lrogersinlvby ryyjma from san fedele intelvi,Hallo!
Hallo! Now you begin to say that even the 10.7.2 solve the problem: if so, what should I do? Keep my iMac with the wi-fi does not work ?..... Are you kidding? I bought a Mac, not a PC!

Oct 6, 2011 11:08 AM in response to lrogersinlvby Stephen Antonacci,I have Lion Mac OS X 10.7.2 (11C73) (GM Relase Build) and I can tell you that on my MacBookPro3,1 the Wifi instability and disconnects are still present aswell as a problem with the NetBios Name not appearing on the network when the computer is connected through Wifi instead of ethernet. You should test this Netbios issue on your machines to see if the problem is specific to notebooks because on my setup which is a very apple specific setup I am using an apple timecapsule latest generation the netbios problem doesn't occure on a late 2009 imac. This problem of the netbios name not appearing has develped with the upgrade and release of lion... Snow Leopard did not have this problem and I tested that by downgrading to snow leopard. This netbios name problem creates havok for SMB shares since windows cant even find the machine. I was hoping that 10.7.2 would fix this it wont... I am letting you know that you are going to be dissapointed if you think this release will fix wifi as well as SMB problems it doesn't... I am very upset with how long this is taking to fix it is clearly a bug numours posts and messages to apple I would really advice apple customers to complain in the feedback http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html and bug reports http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/.. Hope they fix this with an interm update however it most likely wont be fixed until 10.7.3 and maybe not even by then.

Oct 6, 2011 11:35 AM in response to lupunusby Stephen Antonacci,I have tried everthing to get this computer to appear on the network it will not.. The only thing that made it appear back in windows was downgrading to Snow leopard.... What upsets me about this is now my laptop has to be chained down connected to Ethernet in order to perform In a Windows World.
Things I have Tried...
1. Restore Machine
2. Format and use default configuration not a restored one by setting up completley new user this method fixes the screwed up checkbox in the smb sharing user settings.
3. Change Default Netbios name make the name one word as well as deleting the system configuation folder.
4. Restoring the time capsule and resetting it up.
5. Connect to a wireless network without security.
Nothing has worked the only thing that worked is a downgrade to snow leopard this is a definite bug in lion.

Oct 8, 2011 1:35 AM in response to BenM77by BenM77,Hi All
An update on my fault finding.
With AppleCare support = reset PRAM and SMC and trash systemconfiguration.
Next morning my wifi had turned off ( I leave iMac on for appletv's) and I had to connect manually.
Yesterday I used disk utility and did the repair disk permissions.
I then did multiple sleep/wake with no issue. Slept for 10mins and an hour.
Woke up this morning and checked my iPhone and the shared library was still there, meaning iMac had lasted a whole night :-)
I will update tomorrow, if it fails again then I will continue with apple support.
Summary
Try disk utility, repair disk permissions.
