Q: Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion.  The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly.  Please give me some advise....

I just noticed that my router was set to channel 6, which also happens to be the default channel of every 2WIRE Uverse router in the neighborhood, which there are several that my wifi picks up on my iMac. I changed my channel to 11 so, we'll see what happens ...

MY MBP 2011 is doing it now since i installed lion a week ago. every few minutes even when active it just drops then searches uncsuccessfully for wifi connection or loses internet.

I fixed similar generations ago by setting packet size from MTU=1400 to 1200. Cant figure how to do this with my inrternode supplied billion router. can change it alright but wont enter as complains about ?vci/v..=8/35.

This is OT to the current subject, so I won't dwell on it, but you should never move an email out of it's mailbox using AV software, either to quarantine or the trash. This will corrupt the mailbox index which could cause you to lose additional emails and it will not delete the original message from an IMAP server, so that same message will be downloaded again the next time you check for new mail. Go to the ClamXav Forum for additional

I tried E-V-E-R-Y fix on these threads.

Trying EVERY fix is not a valid troubleshoot and does not compensate a stringent search for the reason of the issue.

    Dear all,

I also have the slow wifi problem, and my system is macbook air, lion with 10.7.2.

However, I found some thing interesting.

First of all, I found this problem becasue I test download with FileZilla for my macbookairI(lion) and mac mini(snow lepard). I found mac mini's  dowload speed is about 500 KB/s, but macbookair is about 100KB.

So, I thought it's wifi network problem. However, I try another ftp software CyberDuck. By using this software, macbookair can get similar download speed as mac mini. (I have no idea why FileZilla is much slow )

On other hand, I tested dowload speed by the safari, it can achieve the similar speed as macmini.

          So, my conclusion is.

          Macbookair with lion .

Safari and ftp download speed could be similar as other system.

But file copy finder seems quite slow, but I didn't know how slow is it.

Could everyone know how to measure the finder copy speed or faster copy via finder ?

    Just to mention it:

on there you may find a couple of well working diagnostic tools:

    http://www.measurementlab.net/measurement-lab-tools#tool2

I recomend to use MDT and NPAD as the Internet connection (WAN) is normally ok.

Although the tools are more specific for sophisticated users, they will give also normal users a useful overview.

You should (if running Lion) use the build in Wireless Diagnostic Tool to check your own wireless. ("Go" - "Go to folder" - /System/Library/CoreServices )

When I use wifi diagonostic tool , it shows signal -44~-40 dB, and noise -94 dB.

        I don't know if it's normal......

That's pretty good and indicates a rocket fast connection.

On signal less is better and on noise more is better as the signal value represents (minus values) the decrease of the original signal strength due to distance and obstacles.

Next step now is to find out what disturbs the throughput in your wireless.

    But remember:

On a wireless network all participants share the real bandwidth equally.

Normally the real throughput in a well designed wireless network will reach around 50% of the displayed connection speed.

So, if you have a 150 MBit/s connection speed the real throughput may theoretically are some 60 - 75 MBit/s for one station (client), 25-30 MBit/s if a third station is active in the network and so on.

Also don't mix up the Internet connection speed with the speed inside your wireless network. Normally the Internet speed is the slowest part at all.

There are also minor differences in the speed depending on the used protocol.

I think Lupunus is correct. It is not a Lion issue!

I believe it is purely down to a corruption during the upgrade. So if you think that a fix will come out in the next patch then I think you are going to be in for a long wait.

You could spend hours, days, weeks and months in my case trying to find the corruption.

There have been lots of other issues dragged into this thread but if you suffered the issue which this thread was actually created for then there is only one definitive fix (I Think)…

This is pretty much what I did:-

    Manual backup of the following

    Documents

    Mail

    Photos

    Music

    Movies

    Address book

    Safari bookmarks

And any other bits you may have saved on HDD.

Make a list of applications. You will need to download and re-install again.

    Adium, VLC, Skype etc

Make sure you have your iLife Disk!!

    Now the drastic bit:-

Make sure you have internet (This cannot be done offline without an internet connection).

Shutdown and disconnect the External HD or Time Machine with your manual backups on it.

Erase the Hard drive (Macintosh HD on mine)

Re-install Lion from the hidden partition.

Copy your data back to the correct locations

Install iLife and run software updates as required

    Download your Applications and install

    Turn on Time Machine.

From start to finish took about 6 hours for me (Be much quicker if you have a good broadband as lots of data was downloaded from apple during the install).

Doing it this way stops you from dragging possibly corrupt settings from your backups. If you still have the issue after this then I think there may be an issue with the hardware.

So please stop messing with your router settings (Channels\MTU\SSID’s) as you do not always have control of these (Out and about) and get re-installing.

Hope this works for you as it has given me a working iMAC again and got the wife well and truly off my back!!

If you are not confident in doing this contact Apple support and insist on someone talking you through the process. The Apple guy that assisted me was fantastic. He was genuinely a pleasure to deal with.

Faith well and truly restored in Apple

    Cheers

I was able to resolve this issue by adding a DHCP reservation so that my Macbook is assigned a static IP.  One of the previous posters did the opposite to fix the problem...so I have no idea why this resolved the issue.  It was also strange that it only affected my old macbook, even though both of them are running lion.

The only symptom that I was experiencing was a seriously degraded internet connection (could hit a bandwidth tester site, it would peak at 8 mbit/s down, then speed would dwindle and finally the connection would crap out).  After adding the DHCP reservation, I consistently get 17 mbit/s down over wifi.

I keep addressing this issue and the fact that it is unresolved and it seems like I am the only person who is also experiencing a wifi connection issue on all my computers and devices, mac's and PC's.  Is anyone else having this same issue.  I am not using an airport, but a regularly appointed Verizon FIOS router and I cannot keep an internet connection for more that a few minutes.  Once the connection is lost on my iMac it also drops on my iPhone and my husbands PC laptop.

I've tried every solution that I'm capable of and I tried to contact Apple, but was turned away because I don't have apple care for my 4 year old iMac.  They actually wanted me to pay $50 so I could speak to someone only to I'm sure get the same answers everyone else has been getting and not have my problem solved.  Forget it!
