Q: Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion.  The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly.  Please give me some advise....

Still connected ...have not pinged since last post ...and have not dropped my signal....woke from sleep and connected...can it be that just adding more connection #s in the DNS is keeping me connected?

Okay, if you are seeing "no route to host" failures of ping to the router, then that does imply that the network interface is either dropping, or has no address assigned that corresponds to the routing that is in place.  If you are setting at your computer with ping running, and you see "no route to host" happen, or can't connect, please try the "ifconfig -a" stuff from my previous post to see what the network configuration is.  What's important is to see which interfaces are up, and if they have addresses assigned to them.  You might also look in /var/log for what log files are being modifed recently and tail those to see if there are any errors being reported there.

    ls -ltra /var/log

will show you the modification dates on the files, and put the most recently modified at the end of the list for you The -r reverses the sort, -t sorts on time, -l is long format, -a is all files, even hidden files.

I'm going to start documenting the number of times I get kicked off the internet and when I get home I'm thinking about doing a video and posting it to youtube to further document the trouble I have been having and the lost time wasted on wifi issues with Lion.  Every 3rd time I get kicked off at home I have to go to the router and reboot it other wise there is no way to log back on once the network assistance asks for the router password.

In the meantime my wifes $400 HP never drops the wifi, of course unless I'm rebooting.

I called Apple tech support and told them that I am strongly consdering downgrading back to Snow Leapord and to send the appropriate information that will help me do so.  More lost time.

I am really disappointed in how Apple has handled this issue by pretending it's not an issue.  I have a bad feeling that this might be the Post Steve Jobs Apple.

Since adding more #s in the DNS window ..I have not had any drops.....there are other issues of course..I can no longer use Firefox because it hangs forever before connecting ..but Google Chrome and Safari are working fine. so adding the alternate connection #s has worked for me....I don't want to Jinx myself but it's all working. it was dropping my location and it was refusing me to get back on because every time I would get dropped I'd open the airport icon and click my location and it would ask for my password and then tell me it was the wrong password. It has not dropped me so far since adding the alternate 5 sets of #s.

Seriously Apple? You have had how long to address this issue? Obviously if there are 96 PAGES on this specific issue than it is not purely issolated. Does an issue in the discussion boards have to reach 100 pages before you will address it?

Okay folks, getting on here and blasting Apple is not providing any traction on this issue.  You need to be on the phone with Apple Care and telling them what's going on and how it's affecting you.  That's how the Apple support system works.  It's real, and if you don't talk to them about it, it's not going to get fixed any sooner.  Like all companies, I'm sure that have specific resources assigned to dealing with issues like this, and if they don't understand how many people are having the problem, and if they can't understand that sometimes their fixes only last for a few hours or few days, then they won't be working on fixing it, because the only information that they have, is that the problem was fixed, and no software updates are necessary.

Please don't get on here and start a bunch of childish name calling and whining.  Apple has a support infrastructure called Apple Care.  If you don't use it, you won't be helping them to help you, period.

Only so many hours in the day.  I was on with Support today, only to be repeatedly pointed back to the printer manufacturer, or the cable company, or questioning why I needed 4 airports to cover my house.  At times, the person wasnt even making sense.  If the printing via direct connected USB is working fine, but then in the next step you cant print via wifi?  I have been through a month of troubleshooting with and without Apple support, and think the criticism is deserved at this point.  Most people just want them to acknowledge there is a problem here either with the OS, or the Airport firmware update that just came out.

Carl, that's right!  When I called Apple they completely denied the issue existed.  When I went into the store, the "genius" explained that he had seen over 30 Macs that day running Lion, and all of them were connected to the Apple Store WiFi with no problems, so "it had to be a hardware issue".  He offered to replace my WiFi card (same brand and same model) for $90.  I have been running Mac OS 7.0.0 for the past week after that, and have experienced less failure, but when I compare the WiFi speed of my sony Win 7 laptop to my MacBook Pro, it brings me to the sad realization that the issue is not even close to resolved.  I still get serious dropouts at Starbucks, my house, Google WiFi in Mountain View, and at school (4 blocks from Apple Headquarters).

So go ahead, give them a call.  I am going to bet that they don't have a solution, deny that it's their issue, and put you straight through the process that everyone else has already tried.  Many people on here have tried every solution and come to the same conclusion; it works for a day or so and starts failing again.

I was going to install Windows or Ubuntu on this system, but found out that Lion breaks the bootloader, and have read horror stories while people went back to Snow Leopard.

So, now what smarty pants McGee?  I could always take my laptop to the crapple store and see if they will install a new WiFi card for$90.  Yeah, and maybe I can buy a new battery for my iPhone 4s while I'm at since I have already used all my charges and my battery life is crap now since their software had a huge battery flaw. Maybe I can replace the screen in my MacBook now since it has a line burned across it from the keyboard?  By the way, this is all going to cost me about $600.  Maybe I can go get a new apple care contract for $300 while I am at it since they don't do squat even if it's a manufacturer flaw?

How about I take the money and go buy an HP or a Dell? Sure it's not a shiny aluminum laptop, but at least in 2 years I can say that I have money to invest in the latest and greatest laptop instead of unsupported Crapple McCraperson.  Money is the motivator for Apple, and the Apple execs are about as greedy as they come.  If they can’t outsource the support for fear of their reputation, they won’t pay for quality support here at home.  And that is the story…  $15 billion in profit for 2010, and they can’t even acknowledge that there’s a bug? Maybe they are all running the 2013 models or have 80 wifi access points in every corner of their aluminum houses, but I live down the street from the Cupertino campus, and I can tell you for sure that I am not the only Mac user in this area with the WiFi disconnect issue.

I am about to go pull an Occupy Apple if this is not resolved soon!!!

    Cyclic,

I hear you 110%. Apple does not want another "iPhone Antena" scandle on it's hands. To that end they are in going to say this is an imaginary problem forever.

Of course I have the same issues of the Broadcom WIFI card variety on my brand new 13" MacBook Pro.

    Don

Don't make me laugh. I did call Apple Care and the ...well: the guy at the phone whose name is Roy...(he was not allowed to say his lastname) was very much aware of this problem! So, they do not live one thinking that the problem is resolved ...believe me they have more than enough information to convince them that there is a problme. As I said earlier, the problem is already documented in commercial magazines on iMac/iPad/iPod (the magazine is called iCreate (http://www.icreatemagazine.nl/): in november's issue Lion is described WITH its so-called child desaeses...wifi dropping being one of them ...and it is mentioned that it has not been completely solved!).

So, Apple either doesn't work on it or they cannot solve it ...

This afternoon I took the plunge and swapped out Lion's wi-fi driver for the one that came with Snow Leopard and I'm pleased to report that I once again have a reliable wi-fi connection on my late 2009 iMac. Prior to that, my wi-fi would rarely drop out but would frequently slow to a crawl which could only be resolved by turning wi-fi off and back on again.

If you have a Mac with the Atheros wi-fi chipset, it may be worth grabbing the Snow Leopard drivers from http://rys.pixeltards.com/2011/09/04/osx-lion-wifi.html and giving it a try (make sure you keep a copy of the Lion KEXT just in case).
