Q: Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion.  The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly.  Please give me some advise....

But how is it in my house alone 3 older mac systems(2007 imac, first gen MB air, black macbook), 2 windows laptops, 5 iPhones, a Xbox 360, apple tv all run just fine with no hiccup, but yet my macbook always drops signal with the airport built in, yet not with the USB wifi. I am not going to through **** trying to reconfigure a router that works just fine with everything else except my macbook running Lion.

Also I didn't just say it was the driver, I said it's either a software or driver problem with Lion.

I'm interested in this thread because because I am ready to upgrade my router from G to N. My linksys WRT54G has been bulletproof for all of 8+ years. I would have gone to N earlier but I had G rated airport cards in some legacy Macs on the network. I am fully N now and ready to upgrade. All my Macs are running Lion and none have failed to connect and remain connected to the Wrt54g, including an 2008 MBP and Late 2011 iMac. All network settings were brought over by Migration Assistant. So, is there a common theme vis a vis in router manufacturer? Would there be a recommendation on a specific router to replace the Wrt54g which would have a consensus here?

my G router is still bullet proof... but with the high number of items that have entered my home using the 2.4Ghrz spectrum, I decided to go with the new Apple Time Capsule. I love it. But if your wireless printer is G, then you need some way to extend or bridge the connection. So now I have upped it to the 5Ghz and the items seem connected much faster.

It appears to me from reading all of this problem with LION and WiFI that APPLE has no clue.  Could that be possable?

I think Apple is fully aware of this problem.  They either choose to ignore that there might be a problem that is not going away based on the number of pages this one issue has generated and it's growing every day, or maybe they are not going to say anything until they have a fix.  As for me, I would like to hear from Apple and that they are at least aware of the problem and are working on a solution. I am a big Apple fan but this issue has shaken my confidence in them.  I have been using Apple products for a long time and I have never had a problem I could not fix myself.  The reason I went to Apple was because I was told they work.  I am not a compter tech and have many other things to do with my time than try to fix an issue that should have never been allowed to happen in the first place.  I have told my friends who are consider the Lion upgrade to wait until Apple has come up with a fix.  Otherwise stick with SL.

Good luck to all who are still fighting this issue.

I don't have this issue. What wireless router are you using?

    Tom,

I spend 60% of my time on my Airport Express at various hotels around the world.  But when I home I'm now using an Airport Extreme which replaced my old Linksys router.  The old Linksys and my new MBP did not get along well after the upgrade to Lion.  But after swithing to the Airport Extreme and a trip to the Genius Bar I have no longer been having wifi issues now for the last month.  It was very frustrating and I understand the anger out there with people who have not had their issues with wifi resolved yet.

Thanks for the reply. I have a an Wrt54g Linksys with no issues. My WiFi is unencrypted. Looking to choose a Wirelees N upgrade. That's two votes for Apple Airport. I'd like to think there is a third party alternative.

    Guys,

while I cannot praise enough your commitment to try and help on this matter, I find HUNDREDS of pages suggesting to replace routers, add access points, change IP configurations and whatsoever quite disturbing.

Disturbing because even if I can do all you suggest (and many people cannot), Apple has always advertised its "Get a Mac - it just works" with pride and this very serious problem hasn't even been officially acknowledged.

Point is, it's a software issue with Lion, end of the story!

I have a Macbook Pro (latest 17" model with Lion pre-installed): no problem, works just fine and never experienced any line drop.

I also have a Mac Pro 1.1 (original series 2006 - first one feat. Intel):

    - Snow Leopard -> no problem

    - upgrade to Lion -> Airport Wifi dropping every 10-15 mins (signal icon going grey)

    - downgrade of wifi drivers as suggested in some forums -> did not work

    - downgrade to Snow Leopard (format and re-install) -> no problem

After I started experiencing a few line black-outs in the past three months (much less dire than with Lion and Airport Signal was always on: just 5-10 secs of zero bandwidth) I purchased a USB Wifi dongle, thinking that it would have been easier to find compatibily with newer hardware:

    - Snow Leopard -> no problem

    - upgrade again to Lion -> USB Wifi dropping every 5 mins!

So, please, let's stop asking/expecting people to turn into computer freaks or spend money to replace components that work perfectly well: Apple must find a solution to this Lion software issue with Wifi (and/or older firmwares...).

    It's just that simple.

Lion, is like the fuel you put in your car. If you decide to upgrade to E10 fuel, you better make sure you your vehicle could handle the fuel before you say "it just works" or "its just that simple."

My situation exactly.  I have four other Macs and 1 IBM, 1 iPhone, 1 iPad all connected to ATT U-verse.  The ONLY one with the problem is my unibody MBP 17" 2.8GHz.   Funny thing is, my iMac 27" has LION and is working fine, but it is on ethernet to U-verse modem.  My daughter has a unibody MBP 15" - with LION - and does not have a problem. I've torn my hair out over this.  Bought new Snow Leopard because I couldn't find original. Now, since my MBP is not backed up, I can't go back and re-install SL without wiping out all of my files. So, I'm going to have to back it all up in order to change back to SL.  What a royal pain.
