Q: Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion.  The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly.  Please give me some advise....

Just because the old router works with the old Macs, doesn't mean the old router doesn't have a problem interfacing with the new Macs.

But! LinkSys? There is a problem with LinkSys and Macs, they do NOT work well together!

Just go to Apple Support and enter Linksys, and you will see multiple articles warning Mac users about linkSys.

    SRSLY!

    Hello Carlo,

I did not bring a 30 year old Volkswagen Beatle to the pump for E10.  I brought a MacBook Pro that was 6 months old with 8 gbs of ram to the Lion pump.  So in all fairness I expexted the new OS to work on my machine with very few issues, it did NOT!  What I ran into was a nightmare that did not get resolved for 4 months.  This experience has shaken my faith in Apple and I will look upon the new OS that is sure to be replacing Lion some time in the future with a great trepidation.

And in six month, is it possible that your permisions or something else might need repairing or fixing. did you try some of the things i suggested?

    Carlo,

This is not my first MacBook Pro, I did all the restting and permission repairs until I was out of ideas which is how I ended up on this forum and eventually to the Genius bar.  I checked for software updates daily in hopes Apple had come up with a fix.  No luck there either.  After ther Genius did some resetting in the network page and a few other things I have not have the problems that I was having.  I also ended up replacing my old home router with a new Airport Extreme.  Life would be great if I never left home but I spend 19 days a month away from home and dependent on other peoples routers and networks and from time to time I still might see the wifi drop out but I don't think it has anything to do with my machine anymore.

I think Apple needs to admit they have a problem with Lion and they would be best served to let people know they are working on this problem.  Unfortunately Apple has decided to say nothing in hopes that the problem will fix itself.

    Sunny,

Your absolutely right.  My MBP had fits with my old Linksys router.  My wifes Windows machine never had an issue but after replacing the router with an Airport Extreme my MBP never drops the wifi signal and the internet is very fast now.

Thank you, emd3! I am new to this site, and validation is appreciated.

It is mysterious how a router may need a firmware update, or an OpSys may not work quite right after a systems upgrade, or a user might not notice when user settings change.

Patience is a virtue when dealing with these issues.  If you call for support, it is a person on the phone, not a God.

And, you never really know who is posting on the "help" site, do you?

Your very welcome Sunny.  I have been using an Airport Express on the road and just did a firmware update on it yesterday.  And when thinking back about my old Linksys router I never did anything to it as far as updates were concerned in the 5 plus years I owned it.  I really like how you can access the Apple routers using the Airport utility to do anything you want.  My old router had a password that I never did figure out how to change and was impossible to remember.  So I have learned my lesson as far as routers are concerned.  If your thinking about a new router I cannot recommend the Airport Extreme enough.  Typical Apple, easy to set up and works great.  Plus it's "Extremely" fast.

No you don't now who is posting on these forums for the most part and if Apple thinks this is a form a tech support they're mistaken.  I think as far as I'm concerned I'm not used to MAC not working and if I had a problem it was easy to fix.  Not this time, it was a chore but I think all systems are go for now.

    So happy computing Sunny,

Happy computing backatcha, Ed. I appreciate your replies muchly.

Apple is a new universe to me, and if I can help someone with a problem I am very Happy.

Being an "Older Person," I have learned much patience in my life. If it doesn't work today, maybe it will work tomorrow, or next week. The fact that it does not work right now IS NOT A PERSONAL REFLECTION ON "MY USER ABILITIES!"

Does anyone here recognize the absolute WONDER that is a computer?

    Carlo,

I'd agree with you if my problems were the system overall being slow, the graphics card sweating to update the new UI or what say you.

None of the above: this is an issue affecting a single (but, alas, important) component and definitely an... oversight by Apple which must be fixed at once.

I'm used to read about system requirements when upgrading my hardware/software: I cannot recall finding anything about my Macpro being too old in all those shining ads about Lion's hundreds of new features nor a window popping up during the installation process read "your system is out of date and Lion may not work properly: do you wish to continue?"

Also, I could (maybe) understand my Macpro being old (no Winzozz user could expect to still use her PC after two/three years: mine has been working flawlessy for SIX now, with every OS upgrade making it better than before!) but here we are talking about Macs dated 2008, 2009 and 2010.

    Sorry, excuses are not accepted.

Then make an appointment and go to an apple store. The thing is 3-5 years ago, we did not have as many wireless devices as we do today. I count close to 15 in my home alone. So, maybe either try to reinstall Lion, and up your router (ie Airport Extreme or Time Capsule) to 5 Ghrz... see if that works. I am really trying to be helpful.

I think some N routers do interact differently with different equipment. So if you decide to use an N router, and your not happy with the 2.4 Ghrz selection, (and there could be other reasons as well that affect the reception.) The amount of bandwith that we all have used has considerbly gone up.  I wish i could tell you more.

Okay here's my fix -- I'd done all the earlier fixes for my Macbook Pro and I've had no improvement in Wi-Fi connection; my Wi-Fi is (was) intermittent and slow. Here is my solution for you all to try to turn your slow machines into fast internet rippers! To start, I am not a computer expert. I just finally found the answer after hundreds of wasted hours doing research and seeking tech support; Charter and Apple. My solution is the wireless router itself. I had done all the prior mentioned adjustments and found no relief. What did it for me is going into my Charter Netgear router and unactivating the IP FLOOD DETECTION. To quote someone much more knowledgable then me, "IP Flood Detection is a type of Denial of Service attack whereby the victim or system is flooded with information, using up all available bandwith thereby preventing legitimate users from access." I had to log onto my WI-Fi router and then navigate to a special page to find this feature and unselect this option.

Note: my Wi-Fi issues were limited to my home; at the Apple store, perfect, using neighbor's Wi-Fi, pretty good.

I hope this does it for you. I blame Charter. Oh well. I was close to returning this pretty little thing -- I'm so glad I found this below link:

Feel free to buy me a new iPad to express your gratitude.

    Hi Tony

Well the saga continues, spent over 3 hours on the phone with an "Apple Genius"  who has tried several fixes from deleting plists to deleting SMC's creating a new network, still the problem continues. I spoke with my local Apple store manager today and had a heated discussion about my displeasure that Apple were not rectify a matter that was clearly out there.  The "Genius" i spoke to this evening said he had researched the problem and it was and I quote "not a known problem to Apple" the Genius I spoke with is convinced the problem is with my router!  So as I have a spare router I am going to change this out and a Genius will call me tomorrow to check on the progress.  A work around as the Genius called it is for me to purchase an Airport express!

I will keep you posted on the progress!

oh not a good move...In snow lepoard, it was safe to delete the plists... in Lion, it is NOT SAFE to delete the plist files. You will have to reinstall Lion if that is what is on your computer.

It's Perfectly safe to delete .plist preference files. They will be rewritten when the program attached to them is launched.
