Q: Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion.  The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly.  Please give me some advise....

So I should turn a blind eye and continue to let Apple put out this type of junk when they can just assume that everyone will change for them? I think not. If you read from the beginning of every one of these threads, we are not alone and no one has a set fix. If there was, these threads wouldn't continue to grow daily.

UVA, VT to an extent, Roanoke College... all with the same issue.

I am not a network expert.... but if I new the details of your network... i am sure i would be able to find a solution. You should look at your intranetwork and not blame it on a wifi issue or an OS issue.

yea I am at my college right now in the south... and i have no issues on their wifi.

I think you should do more research on your end... your hypotheses and inductive reasoning is not correct.

I don't think you understand. EVERY computer, both PCs and Macs,  worked fine on our network until the release of Lion. How is that not an OS issue? That just doesn't make any sense, lol.

So tell me about the encryption of your network and what access points you use. Not ALL Lion users have trouble with wifi (among the other major Lion issues), even though it hasn't worked flawlessy for any of them while Snow Leopard did. Even when they go from campus to home, they have issues on their home routers as well.

What is your university? I would really like to contact their IT department for a fix.

And again, rather than just suck it up, smile and say, "Oh silly Apple." I want some accountability. I've enjoyed Apple products for years until this release and everyone just wants to turn a blind eye.

well... call other IT persons from other colleges... something is wrong on your end, not the os of Lion.

What is your university if its working there? I really would love a fix.

I'm starting to think I'm just talking to someone who will defend this OS to the end when there are DOCUMENTED issues all over the internet that have not been addressed.

Edison State College. At home I use a simple WPA 2 connection to my airport Extreme... here at the school... i do not know what they use... but it available on each building... on campus it is an open wifi... But I would be more than glad to ask the IT department here for you.

Ah, well I see why you have no issues then. Open wifi works on our campus for guest access and has less issues than encrypted. Due to the nature of the university, we have to have an encrypted network and herein lies the issue.

That being said, between home and the university, all students have one issue or another.

That's what I'm simply trying to say, there is a problem with the OS and no one is addressing it (at least it hasn't been mentioned in the developer's builds).

    Snow Leopard = Wireless works.

    Windows 7 = Wireless works.

    Lion = Wireless doesn't work.

How is that not an OS issue?

I'll contact them. (I'm actually in Virginia)

It's difficult to troubleshoot considering your university has an open network with no encryption.

I just checked out all the information about wireless from the Edison State College page and there is a vast difference between your network and our's (as well as most modern infrastructures). I wouldn't feel extremely comfortable doing anything private on your network when a simple session with Wireshark could yield a TON of private information. You might actually want to contact your university about VPN OR adding some kind of encryption.

Maybe there's an encrypted network that I don't see on the web page, but WHOA, I'd be very nervous.

To be sure, open networks, whether it be home, a hotel, a university or hospital have "fewer" issues on Lion, but the problems aren't eliminated. In almost all cases, some form of enterprise level encryption has to be in place and this is the issue.

In the end, I want Apple to fix it because this was the final straw for us as we've done this over the years for every Mac OS that comes out without any gripes. This one just seemed like while it was good in theory, it was released too early and this time I'm not going to just deal with it. Microsoft has to pay the piper sometime and it's time Apple does too on this release.

Thousands of posts across numerous forums can't all be wrong.

BTW, FGCU has the same setup as your university: http://wireless.fgcu.edu/cfgMac.asp

All open access and many places just can't do that without major liabilities with regards to security and privacy.
