Q: Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion.  The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly.  Please give me some advise....

    Nnsense,

I too loaded rys's patch and yes my connection was lighting fast, however be warned here, You'll loose airdrop and gain other strange stability issues. Eventually my iMac wouldn't wake from sleep and started behaving very erratically.

    Cheers

OK folks, my symptoms were that unless I was in line of sight with my apple time capsule, then no wifi - or it would start but then another device would send it offline. I have sorted it by going into my airport utility screen.

Then going wireless / wireless options.

Choose radio mode and (you may need to press the OPTION button on your keyboard to access this, choose the mode I have chosen below (in my screenshot). You will note this option EXCLUDES the N frequency of networks.

Now finally, all sorted, just reliable internet connection all through my house. Still really annoyed I had to spend this long trying to troubleshoot and scan through forums to get to this. Come on Apple, surely you could just expect it to "just work" like SJ said many years ago ??

Also forum users, how does my score go from 0 to a little higher now that I have sorted this one out ?

    Cheers,

What is the power level settings on your time capsule?  Is it on low power, or what?  In a house, with walls, you should be running with medium to high power.  If you have concrete walls around you with metal rebar, or metal studded walls, then you might see quite a bit of "reflection" of the RF signal, and this can make it very hard to get a reliable signal.

I carried on having issues other than the wifi, so much so I decided to take the mac to Apple locally and have them look at it. Not one of the guys in the store admitted to know anything about the lost connestion issues that appear to be effecting folk globally.  They suggested I did a complete re-install but not till I had cleaned the drive completely. Well what with the slow wifi the re download took and age but we got there in the end!

My wifi problem is still there grr and I've gained another silly weired problem. Every time the mac pops into sleep mode, when I click the mouse to wake her, instead of seeing my log-in screen I get a black layer that I have to brush or scoll away before I can sign in again... Most odd!

To be honest I'm close now to re-installing Snow Leopard, why not, it worked prefectly fine didn't it?

    Cheers

    Hi Steve,

Any problems with Snow Leopard ?

    Or all working fine?

Since I changed that radio mode, after 2 days it all started going pear shaped..... even bluetooth stuffing up.

I am just backup up data, then about to change to snow leopard also.

Just wanted to make sure it'd solved everything for you?

    Regards,

    Daniel

This is shame really....so far my disconnection frequency was bearable....these days, back to the original situation: each time the imac go to sleep, disconnected....really annoying. At the beginning I tried different fix from this discussion and quickly gave up as nothing is changing, then anyway as soon as I get an update, the fix disappears....Tiring. I start to be quite discouraged by the reports given by people who tried apple support, apparently their response is not really promising to continue entertaining the hope of a real breakthrough from them.... I refuse to disinstall and reinstall it all by my own, it is my first Mac, and I am not an IT guy....

I've got a 1st gen Time Capsule that was starting to play up ( it's yet another known QC issue ) and so bought a brand new AEBS last week . After it arrived yesterday I spent over 12 hours non stop trying to get the useless thing working on my ADSL to no avail , Lion doesn't help and that useless pos 6.0 airport utility ! Wish I'd stuck with snow leopard !!!

7.6.1 is a total disaster and Apple should be ashamed of themselves.

After being a very loyal mac user for over 20 years I'm seriously considering going PC soon , I've had enough of these issues over the last few years - first my Mac pro had internal antenna issues with airport and bluetooth - yet another well known problem - then the x1900 vidocard blew up -  yawn....

What on earth has happned to apple in the last few years ??

Things are still running ok for me.  It's been over a month with no drops now.

But... it's not a real 'solution' to the problem because now I have a machine I am afraid to update the OS on.  There are a bunch of reports of people who managed to fix the problem, only to have it return after the last Lion update.  I use this machine for work and I can't take the chance that things will revert back to how they were when I got it.   I was getting drops every 5 minutes at that point.

Just an update on my internet woes. After replacing my new AEBS that had fw 7.6.2 that dropped connection after 5 minutes with my 1st gen TC running 7.5.2 I've been on line for 18 straight hours no drops nothing.

I guess it must be a firmware issue ?

Beware the new AEBS's don't have the possibility of backdating fw to before 7.6 !

Well yesterday I went out and bought an Ethernet cable and hooked up the mac the old fashioned way... I guess luckily for me, having the device by the broadband box made this possible!

Let's hope they, Apple come up with a fix soon.

    Cheers

I've seen a few posts on here re a fix for the wifi problem. Rys Sommefeltd (I hope I've spelt this correctly)  he found a way to load the older Snow Leopard driver over the later Lion version. I tried it and it works, however be careful because I started having other issues... Also it removes Air Drop so again be warned.

For now I'm all Etheneted up. One day a fix may indeed come our way, and fingers crossed before this Mountain Lion comes along! What a joke!
