Q: Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion.  The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly.  Please give me some advise....

I resolved my wifi connection problem with Cisco router wrt56gh. After disabling wap security it works perfect. Ofcourse it is now unsecure, but at least working in full speed with no problems.

However in the beginning when I ordered internet service and technician set it all up it all worked. Just three days ago connection started to failure in different ways MBP-s Network preferences showing different problems.

    1. My macbookpro lion is connected with wifi router, but no internet. Also it gets all other wifi networks.

    2. There is message that it does not have ip-address. Even if I assing it manually - doesnt work.

It seems to me there is problem wich is MBP vs cisco wrt56gh specific.

This is really starting to be a problem for me! Installed new Lion and immidiately the Wifi keeps dropping in and out and I can't even chose my own wifi network, when i do i get a strange error message. My iphone works perfectly, my iPad works perfectly. My girlfriends two week old Macbook Air has the same problem as mine and can't find the wifi network. Use a router D-Link DIR 655, worked 100 % with Leopard but swittched to Lion complete nightmare. Does anyone know if you can downgrade the OS? Go back to an older version?

    Hi GPHONEI,

Where do I go in the utility to change the output power of the time capsule ?

It's the latest model - 3TB and everything seems pretty dummed down, ie. no advanced options I can choose or anything.

Any help is really appreciative, thanks.

    Daniel

I’m facing same problem since August when I bought my macbook pro. I guess I tried all possible tricks: resetting the router, changing firmwares, scrips to renew IP assignment etc. Last week I gave up, I’m fed up with this.

This $15 little device does its job superbly. While native hardware in my $2000 macbook pro is not even close to it. VERY bad Apple!

In your circumstances I can see why you are doing this. But what I REALLY don't get in this whole thing is; why do they have the search on AT ALL in a fifty pound 27" iMac? Are a LOT of people moving these things around a lot? I know I'm NOT! It sits in one place, and will sit there till the thing dies - it will ALWAYS have THE SAME internet connection - so why does IT have to search every time you turn it off? I can understand that in iPads and macbooks and stuff, but this thing's big, and it's HEAVY, and it's not going ANYWHERE. This is just plain DUMB, and it's like something Microsoft would do, and ignoring the problem is ALSO like something Microsoft would do.

Fix this, Apple. Don't wait till 10.8. This is just plain stupid.

And BTW I revert to the OS 10.6 kext thing. Same problem, stll searching, just a little quicker now.

    It needs fixing permanently.

    Cheers,

    Cameron

First of all, this is an Apple problem, so stop acting like a fan boy and comparing it to Microsoft.  2nd of all I've been seeing this issues since Leopard, not Snow Leopard.  This is how I get Apple computers to be reliable with wifi connections.

    1. Wether your router is an Apple router or another brand make sure the firmware is up to date.

    2. Set the encryption to WPA/WPA 2 mixed mode (it's called various things on different routers but it allows you to use WPA for older devices and WPA2 for the newer devices that support it.)

    3. Make sure you have all your software updates on the Apple computer with the problem.

    4. Manually set ONLY the DNS addresses to something other then your router as DNS.  Use your ISP's DNS or OPEN DNS which is 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

Creating a new network location wont hurt either.

Also try fully restarting your Apple computer occasionally instead of just lettting it go to sleep all the time.  Doing this for months on end isn't helping the situation.

Even my new mini that shipped with Lion had issues until I took the steps above to resolve it.

    Finally solved it!

I have a Macbook (bought in 2010) and a D-link 655. Had no problem with Snow Leopard regarding Wi-fi, but when I upgraded to Lion the Wifi went on the "fritz". I updated the firmware in the router and now ("knock knock on wood") everything seems to be working. Very close to throw the computer our, unbeliveble how dependent on the "net" I've become!

    Cheers and good luck!

    /H

I too am having the same problem.  I stumbled upon the following solution from a blog.  It worked for me:

Just UNCHECK that "Re-open windows when logging back in" button when you log out or shut down and then restart.

Yes, mine has been doing it pretty much since day one. I completely shut my machine down at least once a week, and always when installing or uninstalling stuff. I also zap the PRAM frequently, and run Disk Utility once a month at least as preventative measures. And, just for the record, I have used NOTHING but Apple products since 1999, so I can hardly be called a PC fanboy...I've hated those things since Windoze 98 raped my IBM...and this is the LONGEST RUNNING PROBLEM Apple has had EVER, that remains unsolved.

I have the newest firmware for the router (an Apple time machine) and always uncheck the re-open widows box every time it appears - that doesn't help at all. I will double-check that I'm doing your procedures, I am skeptical, but if that works, WHY DIDN'T APPLE PUBLISH IT IN THIS THREAD ABOUT 273,442 VIEWS AGO?

This machine takes 20-30 seconds to wake from sleep, 19-29 of which is from searching for a Wi-Fi connection, on a 50 lb, completely UNPORTABLE computer...it's just plain DUMB.

AND I very much appreciate your personal insult, and if it happens again, I'll return the favour.

    Cheers,

    Cameron

I agree completely. A 27" Mac under any typiclal scenario will have just one wifi connection for its entire life. There is simply no reason for it to go looking for other wifi connections unless the user specifically instructs it to do so. If it can't find it's regular access point then it should ask for directions on what to do, but should not go on a fishing trip on its own.

Just spoke with Apple, they are working on another software update for this issue. There is an active article on it but it is for Apple techs ONLY! Although they did not give me access to it, they did tell me enough about it that I was able to go in and fix the issue. We put the computer to sleep that the fix was applied to and brought it out of sleep and it reconnected successfully. When we tried this on an imac without the update it did not reconnect so the fix def works. The update is on it's way. Hang in there. :-)

Timbro, which update are you talking about? I have not had this problem until I updated to v7.3 which supposedly contained a fix for this problem. Now, after updating, I have the problem!  Are you possibly talking about a 7.4 update?

I'm on a late 2011 iMac that came with Lion installed.

Yes richbp, this should be included in the 7.4 update.
