Q: Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion.  The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly.  Please give me some advise....

If there was a fix for this the whole world would know about it... Not just you....

And then, why haven't you given everyone here the fix?

Are you keeping this a secret from everyone?

Sorry, I don't believe you have a fix.... and if you do have the fix and aren't telling the rest of us, ?

Well, you know what everyone here would tell you where to go don't you.........

Actually there are fixes all the time that are never revealed but are quietly fixed in a software update when apple gathers enough of them to justify an update. Let me see if it is anywhere else on the web and if I can find it then I'll post the fix. The tech that showed me it told me not to tell anyone and he may see this post so I don't want to get in trouble with him. I was simply trying to reassure everyone that there is a fix and it's on the way as I've seen it work. I would think the same thing if I were you Joseph.

PS the fix involves messing with the library and I don't think they like people messing with that area.

NO WIFI nzdan007? This fixes the issue where the wifi connection is lost after the computer goes to sleep. Not sure if it fixes no wifi though it might as it involves throwing away the wifi setup in preferences...

Apple has not released a fix yet..... Period.....

No Software Update, No Security release, nothing....

Can't be messing with the Library.... but could be changing something in the Library......

The Library is just a folder.....

    I like a good joke......

    Thanks for making me laugh....

Yes, we all know there is a fix on the way and hopefully for all of us it isn't a 1 GB download just for this fix...

I've had several friends call last week and there was no fix for them...

    Why just you ?

Again, good joke and thanks from everyone for helping....

He doesn't actually have the answer otherwise he would give it to you.  If you look at my reply on the previous page my solution should work for most people.  I repair Macs and PC's for a living and have come across this issue multiple times and the methods I previously stated have resolved the issue.

well it may as well be "no wifi"..... the connection is so inconsistent, I may as well plug my iphone in and use 3G for a better reliable net connection

    PCCustodian,

I am not knocking your solution but that is a workaround, not a fix...

There are other work arounds like not having the Mac go to sleep.. Choose Never sleep in the Energy Saver preferences panel is just one of them...

This seems to be a minor flaw in one of Apple's extensions for wireless in 10.7.3....

maybe the IO80211Family.kext and/or also something similar....

I have tried many things here but can't tell anyone because it is a secret........

I agree with you, if there was a fix, then Apple or the posters would tell us...

Most of the things I listed should be considered common sense when working on computers, installing software updates, updating the firmware of your router and using the best encryption type available (WPA2)  The only thing that could be classified as a work around would be manually setting the DNS addresses.  I've had issues with Apple computers and wifi/wired connections, mainly with non Apple brand routers for a long time (since I got my first eMac) and manually setting the DNS servers has resolved it.  It's very easy and when using DNS servers like Open DNS they work everywhere you go, not just at your house so it never interferes with anything.

It is a "work around" but it's a lot easier to just set your DNS and forget about it then having to wait around for them to fix something that's been an issue for a very long time, not just since Lion was released.  The wifi issue after sleep mode is new, but having a less than reliable connection with anything other than an Apple router has been an issue for a long time.

With my first eMac running Tiger and Leopard the WIRED connection was flaky and would constantly drop until I manually set the DNS.  I've seen the exact same issue, wired and wireless on many other macs.  Maybe they will release a fix for the sleep issue, and maybe even the DNS issue, but I won't hold my breath.

If you look at what people say about being able to see the other computers on their network but not being able to reach the internet (after sleep mode), sounds a lot like a DNS problem to me.

I know all of you want it to "Just work" like Apple computers are supposed to "Just work" but unfortunately, that's not always the case.  I'm not a PC or Mac fanboy, I own both, like both, use both and repair both for other people.

He would not give me access to the fix but he told me briefly what to do and I did it, it worked, then I did it again on another machine and it worked on it as well. I did not write the steps down but I should have. I'll see if I can get them written out tomorrow. i know you start by throwing away your wifi and ethernet connection in preferences under network, then you go into the library I think under pref's and through a file away in there, I forget exactly which one, then you reset up wifi again and voila, it works! I'm more of a photoshop graphics guys not networking so please forgive me for my vagueness. PCCustodian, you may be able to figure it out just from what I've told you, I don't know.

Hello all again. Well after a few weeks of being gone, I am sad to say that there are no solid fixes for the WIFI problem. The only real solution is to hardwire you iMac or Macbook. or get a USB wireless card. We tried everything that everyone here on all 125 pages(at this point) has recommended. Kudos to those who got their's fixed.

Here is what we came up with. The fact that if you use a USB wireless card and don't ever lose connection or experience drops of any sort points to that problem is indeed within Lion software and hardware. I say this because each one of us installed Windows 7 with bootcamp and guess what WIFI works again. Now it doesn't work with Parallels.

For those who are saying they have a fix please do share.

We didn't pay $1100 or greater to have to "wait and be patient" with Apple.

125 pages and still going strong.

    That must tell us something......

I personally am not having any problems with my 3 computers....

They are all running 10.7.3 but different wi-fi cards.

The Mac Mini is running a Broadband firmware and the iMacs are running Atheros firmware...

I don't believe it is a DNS issue as it is looking for the network but am glad this works for some...

This also doesn't appear to be a problem with the Airport Base Station firmware as many people with 10.7.2 don't have these problems... Even downgrading to 7.6 firmware didn't help most people...

So, 7.6.1 seems to be OK except for some iMacs running 10.7.3....

We all seem to be beating our heads against the wall.

Something is rotten in Denmark..... (no offense meant to Denmark)

Looking forward to reading page 126 and 127, etc......... until Apple releases a genuine fix.....

All I know is it fixed my problem. And my problem was after my computers went to sleep when they were woken back up the Wi-Fi was not connected I wouldn't have to click on the airport icon and find the network again and airport would start back up within 10 seconds so wasn't a huge problem but just more or less a pain in the butt.  I will see tomorrow if it continues to work and keep you posted.

    Hi Guys

First post on here and am only really posting to make sure Apple get the picture. I upgraded from 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 around a week ago, then around two days ago my wifi connection start playing up. At first it was just slow page loads, but after a few restarts, router reboots and basically trying everything suggested on google, I'm now unable to get any webpages to load.

AirPort is sometimes saying I have an IP which is valid for my routers dynamic ip range, other times it says I am connected but have no IP.

"Wi-Fi does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the Internet."

Either way though I can't load web pages and I can't ping google or my router. One interesting thing that happened was a message box popped up sayimg something along the lines of my networkshare/netbios name was already in use and was changed. It was while I was fiddling with the Locations settings but might be a lead.

All my other wireless devices work fine and I am certainly not an amature when it comes to this kind of thing (software developer) so it is most certainly an issue with OSX. My frustration is that I just laid out over £2000 for a new MacBookPro and I can't even use Wifi.

    Appalling
