Q: Lion WiFi Connection Problem

I've been using WiFi since 1999 and had forgotten what it was like with these messy things.

But, you are right it is a reliable way to create a network.

One thing I have mentioned previously is when I first had the post-Lion install issues with WiFi I did eliminate the Apple Airport Extreme route as being the issue since I also tried connecting via iPhone Personal Hotspot and that didn't connect either although it shows up as a WiFi connect there was no access to the Internet. I did adjust the Network settings back to default DHCP and its been working without issue for a week.

I'm going to take a risk and upgrade one our our MacBooks and see if we have this thing licked. Cross your fingers.

Check THIS for wireless

and update or uninstall third part software not lion version, specially antivirus.

I just spend a bunch of time trying to fix my Wifi problem on a MacBook Pro where I installed a fresh copy of Lion (did not upgrade). In my case it was a KeyChain issue. So you may want to launch KeyChain application and remove the entries corresponding to your Wifi connection and see if it fixes the problem. My apologies if someone already recommended this, I did not read through all 16 pages of comments.

Same issue to me. MacBook Pro 13, Core 2 Duo.

I tried most of tips but only the ping ones worked.

I have 3 friends who installed Lion and no problem occured.

We are from Brazil. So ... It is a world problem.

Apple needs fix this bug as soon as possible.

I upgraded both my machines.

My mac mini ( mid 2010 8GB ) does the same thing-- wirelss icon stays solid but you can see the dropouts on the Activity Monitor graph

While watching my slingbox it drops ( totally flat lines ) every few minutes sometimes. Undr SL there was never an issue. I have an airport extreme.

My macbookpro doesnt suffer this behavior.

OK everyone... Here is what worked for me... While this is sure to help "aome" it is unlikely to help all, but I assure you that it DEFINITEVELY fixed my problem.

If only I could get Apple to throw me an iTunes gift card, or nice leather Smart Cover for my iPad for all the time I vested trying to get this issue resolved - Better yet, how about an iPhone? - lol

First my symptoms were; Dropping Wi-Fi connectivity after Lion install - I could get a very intermitent, transfer of small amounts of data (about 300kb) then the connection would halt. So effectively I could get (some) text-based emails, but internet browsing was a no-go.

I spent three hours on the phone with very helpful Apple techs, but many of the things they needed me to do were internet-connection reliant, so thier efforts were fruitless. I decided to call my closest Apple store with a Genius bar, which is about 40 miles away, made an appointment, and brought the computer in...

I explained the issue to the tech, he said he could not see any known issues or notes on a "fix" yet while I was there a lady called with the exact same problem... I told them to get ready for more calls as more and more people run into this issue. Anyway... Since I could not connect to WI-FI (the ONLY method of connecting to the internet I currently have) I was unable to get sofware updates and make a network connection, so I was basically stuck.

Keep in mind, I brought my computer in, so it was unplugged for some time... He connected the computer to their network/internet via Ethernet cable, powered the computer, and had instant and immediate access to the internet, then did two things... One was to use spotlight to search for the word "Java", then click on "Java Preferences" - This did a "software update" for Java, THEN he did an actual "Software Update" from the Apple icon (which my computer was up to date) - He then unplugged the Ethernet cable, did a shut down, then reboot, and BAM! - INSTANT WI-FI - No drops, blazing speed, great connectivity!

So for al that have tried every other trick, workaround, or voodoo to try to get things working (like I did) - Perhaps the above process may work for you too? - I assure you that it has fixed my issue, which was EXACTLY as many of you have described here - And it works PERFECTLY! - No band-aids, no patches, no workarounds, just a perfectly working iMac once more!

So in summary:

Unplug your computer for at least a minute or so...

Connect Ethernet cable from modem

Power-up computer

Do Spotlight search for "Java Preferences" click on the Java Preferences app to do a Java update

Then do a "Software Update" from the Apple icon drop down

Then do an actual shut down

Then Reboot

Once rebooted, I had to initially select my Wi-Fi connection as I did not have it setup as a defualt (you may not need to do this)

The first few pages I tried to load took a short while, then the Wi-Fi connection took hold and now everything works perfectly!

I hope this process helps at least some of you, as it has for me!

Nessuna delle soluzioni proposte ha funzionato con il mio IMac 2009 Intel.....java, smc, portachiavi....il mio IMac col wi-fi non funziona...devo per forza collegarmi col cavo.

Mi avvalgo di un Modem/Router Alice wi-fi 2 plus per la rete (che ha sempre funzionato con Snow Leopard): preciso che invece il mio Mac Book Pro più recente (aprile 2011) funziona correttamente col wi-fi, quindi non dovrebbe essere un problema di Router ma, forse, potrebbe derivare dalle schede wi-fi del/dei computer.

Domanda: tutto il mondo o quasi, ha il problema.....quanto dobbiamo aspettare perchè Apple lo risolva?

Confermo quanto detto da ryyjma. IMac 2011 non va, MBP 2011 ok. Stesso Router Alice per entrambe le macchine. Mah...

Il tecnico del negozio Apple non mi avrebbe consigliato ancora Lion, se gli avessi parlato prima, perché in realtà è una beta.

Speriamo in aggiornamenti.

Yeah the funniest thing of all is since I plugged in that ethernet cable the lion machine has 20 meg connection!

its copper it creates a connection where the WIFI in the lion machine does not.

What I find also very very amusing is the usual apple response and in denial fanboi approach of blaming everything from 3rd party apps and devices to routers but not the OS.

I have friends who work for apple in ireland and their response is the same. its kind of like china covering up a rail road crash!

What needs to be made clear is snow leopard works just fine with the setup at home and continues to work fine on my wireless network. The Lion machine however does not.

So apple what does this tell you!

No it does not mean we all rush off screaming to a shop to get a new router or a router that is meeting the specification of steve jobs latest taste. No you make it work the same way the snow leopard works and has worked for the hardware I already have in the house.

Fess up! the OS is borked in respect to the WIFI and a fix will come out while apple and its commie china cover up attitude hope it goes unnoticed until the problem is cleared up.

There are way too many articles appearing online for this not to be a bug.

Until such time I will continue to use this amazing piece of hardware!

I cannot even connect intermittently to the internet via WiFi as Lion will not allow access to the router, despite the fact that Snow Leopard on the same machine had no difficulty.

I see that there are 16 pages of posts on this subject in less than 10 days.  Surely an indication of a systemic problem.

I like my iMac since I swopped from my old PC nine months ago.  but I have to say, I always thought the joy of Apple was that things just worked.  Clearly, that is becoming an urban myth.  What a shame.

Can't really use Lion until this issue is resolved.  It was hard enough getting Lion to install in the first place.  Perhaps that should have been warning enough!

The joy of it being that its supposed to just WORK because we pay good money for it to just work and when it does not work the wagging finger of apple starts pointing at everyone but themself.

Oh its your router, oh its your anti virus, oh its you anything I can think of thats not apple directly!

Talk about a vanity problem!

No rest assured a fix will surface and it will not ever be presented that they screwed it up in the wifi department.

Trust me use a copper cable if you can. this will take away the headache until this fix arrives.

It tells me I'd check for a firmware update from the manufacturer of your router.

I've explained how this can happen, and I'm not trying to say it's not an Apple issue, but at the same time "it works with everything else" is not a valid way to root cause the issue to Lion for the aforementioned reasons.

Note that there have already been several people in assorted threads who came to the same conclusion re: Lion and have since fixed their problems by updating their router's firmware.

At the very least it's worth doing to rule your router out…

Although I do not speak Italian, it looks as if you have been told that the current release of Lion is in reality still a beta product.

If that is so, no wonder there are so many problems.  Is that why it has been released as a cheap download in advance of a "proper" release later in the year?  That would make all us poor idiots not only free testers for Apple but stupid enough to pay for the privilege.  Nice one, Apple!  How to make friends....
