Q: Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion.  The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly.  Please give me some advise....

THANK YOU!!!! Can't tell you how much time this was eating up. Can't believe my fresh-out-of-the box iMac needed this much attention, just to have it connect to the same wifi network that every other device in the house (including iphones, ipad, macbooks) connected to with no trouble.

To clarify: I had to set my router to only transmit g+b signals. Even with MTU adjusted, the n connection didn't work.

I bought a my imac last Saturday.... and I was soooo surprised when my imac couldn't connect to WIFI. My macbook (which is still in 10.6.8), my iphone and my ipad all can connect to WIFI.

I've been reading all the discussions; and I tried all the suggestions.. but nothing works for me

I can only connect through internet through ethernet (not my preferred connection) and via personal hotspot (iphone).

    So annoying.

Please check your router to make sure that you are using a fixed channel, not using "automatic" selection.  For 802.11b/g/n on 2.4ghz, use channel 0 or channel 11.  If you have have a dual band router, make your 802.11n, 5Ghz AP SSID be something different that you can select specifically and try your iMac on 5Ghz.

Clearly there is a problem with how the wifi radio and device driver are handling interference and recovery.  Many people have no problems.  Others have lots of problems.  It's important, if you don't want to fight this, to also use your 1yr warranty period effectively.  If you have an Apple store close by, take your router and your iMac to the store, and tell them it's not working.  If you don't have an Apple store, call Apple Care, and tell them what you are experiencing.

I've heard that there are Apple engineers focused on this issue, and that there is a new update in the works which might finally fix the problem.

Did you try disabling IPv6? go to terminal and type "networksetup setv6off wi-fi". That fixed my wifi problems on 2 different networks.

I did try to disable ipv6.. nothing happened.

I even try to change my router settings... and still nothing.

My imac can connect to the router but not to the internet.  My router was able to assigned an IP to my imac, but when I checked the network settings.. it says 'Self assigned IP'.  The IP per the router and the IP per my imac is not the same.   Also, the subnet mask / router info is not correct in my imac.

My macbook (which is still in 10.6) can connect perfectly to my router...

Oh well, maybe ill just wait for 10.7.5 and hope that the wifi problem will be fine on that version.

For the meantime, I'll use my iphone's personal hotspot to connect to internet.

I am having a similar problem to most of you, however, I cannot change the router settings because my MBA only displays a connection timeout at work. I connect to my works' guest wifi network with my laptop because the xp computers here are awful. For the first two weeks my laptop connected with no problem, then earlier this week it stopped being able to connect to the network. It displays a connection timeout immediately every time I try to connect. I have tried deleting my preferences and creating a custom location. My iPad and iPhone connect to the network without any problem. I even tried copying the tcp/ip information from my iPad but the problem persists. One final note, in order to connect to this network you must accept terms on a redirect page. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, this problem has proven overwhelming so far.

This implies that the DHCP services on the iMac are not having a productive conversation with the router in order to secure an address allocation.  Can you set a fixed IP Address for your network and see if it works when you do that?  What kind of router do you have?  If you reboot your router, does it start handing out addresses correctly then?

After you accept the terms, if you look at system preferences/network settings, do you see an IP address allocation and details that are in line with what you iPhone and iPad show?  Perhaps DHCP is not working correctly with the router?

In response to all. Since I installed the new airport express setting it to work at 5GZ, the wi-fi connection it's working fine with no more interruptions. It is the longest working solution that I tried so far, and it's lasting since the 20th of june.

Great!  So many people seem to find that this, or changing frequencies, or chosing a fixed channel on 2.4ghz solves their problems.  It really seems that the WiFi driver is having problems with interfering signals, and when you either eilminate the interference by going to a clear channel/band, or fix the channel so that the router can't wander around and cause your Mac to chase it, that things work better.

The fact that some people see WiFi connected, but no DHCP results, makes it seem like some people have terrible WiFi interference problems around them.

I actually never get to the redirect page. As soon as I select the network from the wifi menu a connection timeout message appears. My computer has been unable to establish a connection with this network for a week but when I go home it works without any problem on my home network.

    Thanks for your help

Okay, so if you go to System Preferences/Network, and select WiFi, and then Advanced and select the TCP/IP tab, do you see information there that is the same network and router that your iPad and iPhone show?

No under Tcp/IP there isn't any info at all. Ipv4 is using DHCP and iPv6 is set to automatic. I have tried renewing the DHCP lease as well but without result.

One extra note, I just tried logging in to the network through my bootcamp windows 7 and the OS select screen and neither worked.

Try it with IPv6 "Off" and don't forget to apply it.
