I'm still a little peeved that Apple wasn't ripped to shreds in the media over this one (a la MS Vista), but hey, if the students are happy, we're happy.

I've wished the same for Microsoft for virus and malware which has destroyed my data cost me money and time to fix/replace the OS etc.

If you hate Apple, vote with your wallet instead of your mouth.  I'm using Apple products now, because I refuse to give MS any more money for their rediculous business model to succeed.

Apple is clearly, now trying to understand and deal with it.  If a configuration change in the university routers fixes the problem, then who's to say where the blame lies.

Get the information on whether it was a security configuration change, or what area of the stack was the problem, and that will make it a lot clearer what might be going on.

Oh, Microsoft has gotten their fair share of blame over the years.

You're gleaning a lot from my post, but the only thing I expect from any vendor for anything I purchase is accountability. Apple hasn't had any for this problem (not even so much as a public acknowledgement) while this thread has grown to 159 pages. That isn't a simple, "Your stuff is too old. Buy new stuff!" When Snow Leopard worked just fine on the same network, it's an inherent OS problem. I just ask for a simple, "Our bad." That's just good business. I'm not going to expect less support just because it's something there is a cult following for. I own a Honda that people love and have been less-than-thrilled about the numerous safety recalls I've had to bring it in for over the past two years. Honda hasn't said anything publicly and I expect them to.

    Accountability, that's all I ask.

I'm not getting sucked into the PC vs. Mac vortex, but I'll just say, I've never gotten a virus on either the PCs or Macs that I own personally. It's all about being responsible with what you do/where you go on the internet. If Apple gets a bigger market share, expect the same from them.

Anyway, once I get the results from the network team, I'll post them here.

I dont know why you people only downgrade the wifi driver/kext to snow leopard version... thats the only work fix..

I like downgrade iphone baseband... simple like that... google this thing and you will find the solution.

I'd say your lucky.  I've been using PC's since 1985 and never had a smooth upgrade from MS clean install or not..  I was always was forced to upgrade something.  MS ME was so bad MS gave me a full refund and told me to keep the disk.  Viruses and Malware is always a problem with MS and that's running multiple virus and malware stuff.  MS never worried about compatibility with hardware.  Back when dial up  was the only way to the Internet some modems lost compatibility, cd drives, etc and MS never cared.  The press never made a big or small deal about any of it.

Every one by now should know Apple is working on it unlike MS ever did.  They are also listen to everything that we have tried on this forum even working a lot of us to help.  Apple cares about their reputation.  They also don't charge $150 to upgrade two personal machines like MS.  Apple upgrades are $19-$30 and will upgrade all personal Macs in the same house.  Apple is working hard, weekends included to fix a problem with an under $30 program.  Would MS ever do that?

Sorry for the delay in the post, but I just got the pertinent information from the network team. For anyone who can customize their router, this was the single line fix for us (has worked on a Mac community of around 1000-1200):

We added an access-list session dhcp-acl to our student and staff role, with the following rule high up in the order:

    any any svc-dhcp permit

I could find the CLI commands given some time.

For any enterprises having trouble, this has been our savior this year. I hope this can help...

I have the same problem and frustration, and this is my first Mac. My kid used a Mac Book Pro with snow leopard for 2 years without an issue, I was told that the support was great but it is so far from what I believed.

It is so complicated to spend that much time finding a way to solve the connection issues.

Apple is going to fall if they keep selling this kind of software.

    The same here...

    First Mac. I love it!

But this bug is frustrating all the goodies

Do you have Greyed out Airport signal bars when your connection fails, or are the bars black, but you can't open a web page in Safari?

Okay, this seems like a network design error.  It seems like you have DHCP not allowed through some path that was sometime being used because the router DHCP wasn't being used, or perhaps wasn't configured to be on correctly?

The network team can speak to this more than I can, but as I mentioned before, it was a result of something introduced in Lion that caused the incompatibility. All OSs we had worked fine (both Windows and Snow Leopard/older) until Lion was released. The issue was related to something in the driver and something in the router combined, hence the reason that many home users don't have the same problem when they don't use encryption or use anything other than WPA2.

I am not a CISCO expert, and can't draw much from these commands.  If you could have the network team be more specific, that might really help everyone discover what is going on.

As a PC owner since 1990, I bought a mac air as my first apple computer in July. I like the light weight, and speed of the SS drive, and the lighted keys are really cool.

The store attendant was most pleasant and agreeable.     .   But he hadn't heard aof this problem before. .      I returned it
