Q: Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion.  The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly.  Please give me some advise....

    First Aid

    1. Open up the Safari Web browser.
    2. Click on the heading 'Safari' and choose 'Empty Cache' from the pull down menu. It will then ask you if you really want to delete the cache.
    3. Click on 'Empty' if you are ready to clear Safari's memory cache.
    4. Close and reopen the Safari Web browser.

A more drastic method to reset Safari is hitting the 'Reset Safari' button under the 'Safari' heading.

Choosing this option will empty your cache, erase your browsing history, clear the downloads window and remove cookies.

A much more drastic method is to delete and reinstall Safari from the scratch.

For deleting Safari you should use a application like AppCleaner to remove all files.

After deleting reboot and reinstall Safari from Apple -> http://www.apple.com/de/safari/

    Good luck - Lupunus

Mine is ALSO slow to respond after waking from sleep - the rest of the computer is ready to go, WI-Fi is still looking for networks EVEN THOUGH I'VE BEEN USING THE SAME NETWIRK SINCE I GOT THE COMPUTER. I typically take the machine about 15 seconds to find it and reconnect, even if it has only been asleep for SECONDS. This is really annoying. Seems to have gotten worse since Lion. Wish they'd fix it.

    Thanks,

    Cameron

The system frequently scans for new networks. That's a normal behavior according to your configuration in the system settings.

Regardless of how long the system sleeps, after wake up it have to negotiate the WiFi connection with the server (WiFi router) from scratch.

This will take a couple of seconds or even more if you have more than one "known" network in your list, as your system asks all reachable networks for connection top down the "preferred network" list.

To speed up the WiFi reconecting a little bit you may

    • Delete any obsolete networks from the list
    • Drag your preferred network(s) on top of the list

Alternative you may disable the location "Automatic" by creating a new location for "home" with only your own network in the list.

if you want to do so, uncheck the "Remember networks this computer has joined" for the new location to prevent that unwanted networks are added to the list automatically.

Lots of tricks listed to fix this issue. None of which work. It's not your safari cache, cookies, new network searches, or the available network list. The problem is within Lion! Take care before jumping thru all the hoops listed in various forums, you might make things worse. Get on apples case, call, report this issue. That is the only true way to force apple tech to address this Lion issue. And apple knows that...

Had this wifi issue since installing Lion. Every 5 - 10 minutes it just won't work, it says i am connected but the Internet just doesn't respond. 1.7.1 did not make a difference whatsoever.

As wrote on other discussions about "Lion WiFi" many times before, thats (mostly) not a Lion issue, it's more a WiFi or configuration issue, though.

And, not surprisingly, we found more than one working solution to fix WiFi issues, cause there mostly not only one single reason for problems and also clearly not only one instant fix to resolve them.

To develop a working fix for your "Lion WiFi" issue, it's essential to have some more information about your infrastructure and used systems.

Tricks will work only in Hollywood movies and on Las Vegas stages.

What is working most of the time is a classic, clear and step by step, troubleshoot to get rid of the problem.

But most peolple prefer to blame Lion and shouting for a miracle update fix from Apple instead of going the troubleshoot way.

Have in mind, that Apple sold several millions of Lion since first roll out. Only a few (statistically) faces issues with Lion, the majority of installations works pretty well.

Also going throu the boards here and elsewhere, you will see the same diskussions about WiFi, iTunes drop outs or connecting external Displays failed at every time OS X make a major step.

To say it again, in most cases, it's NOT a Lion issue.

I agree I think it is an lion issue there were no connectivity problems prior to installing liion on my imac and no issue with time machine and time capsule. I avioded installing lion on my mb pro good thing as it does not have this problem. The beauty of apple has always been you don't need to jump through hoops or do a bunch of fixes to make their products work well that being said I have hesitated trying any of the fixes and have waited for apple to have a lion update to help with this issue.

wifi connections where always ever a bit tricky and I've NEVER had a system thats working "out of the box" semlessly and with no (at least minor) issues with all WiFi situations could found around there.

I guess (nearly will accept a bet on that) there will be no update from Apple to fix this, as Apple never can imagine and fix all possible WiFi configurations and infrastructures out there with a instant-fix-update.

Maybe that's because you fiddle with them too much.  My WiFi (prior to this singular problem) has always worked 100% with onr initial configuration, barring a couple of times I changed th channel because a neighbour was causing interference.

I'm informed that Apple is aware of this Lion issue and that an update is on the way.

not sure why you keep denying an evident bug. like many other I have had a stable wifi network environment before lion. now I have a cable running accross my flat from the router to my imac. all other devices work fine as long as I do not let lion on the air.

of course you can blame the router, but why is lion the only device/system bringing the router down within 5 minutes???

Nope, I'm not fiddle around like a blindfolded in the fog trying to find a specific tree in the woods.

I'm a well trained tech since the early 90s and I know what I'm doing (and talking about) quite well.

As it will do for the majority of the several millions of Lion users worldwide without any hustle, but, unfortunately, not for all.

For those facing WiFi problems with or since Lion, in almost all cases it's a configuration, incompatibility or infrastructure issue.

Do you have a reasonable source for that?

I have more than one mac in my home network, I start expriencing wi-fi problem on my iMac since I upgraded it to Lion. Never had problem with Snow Leopard, and still having no problem with all other snow leopard machine (and on my iPad).

I tried all the solutions, delete file ecc, none of them worked.

One solution I didn't see listed here and that seems to keep the connection alive is to open a terminal window and do a ping to my router.

I know it's not a proper solution, but a least I can donwload and see movie streaming with no interruption.
