Q: Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion.  The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly.  Please give me some advise....

Do you mean the whole directory "Systemconfiguration" ?

I have such a directory in the directory "Preferences".

Is there no risk to delete the directory "Systemconfiguration"?

    Thanks

    Ben

DO NOT delete the complete system configuration folder.

That can make your system unusable.

It may be a fix to delete specific files from the system configuration depending of the problem you have.

Give a speaking title ("Help" will not do the trick) and provide all info about problem, error messages, what you have done so far to solve the problem and what was the result of that.

I am not sure, maybe someone on here can advise.

Lupunus has suggested deleting some bits which I will look at tonight, at work at the moment.

A very frustrating fault as my apple tv's rely on my iMac, I never had any problems with SL.

Hi Lupunus, thanks for the reply.

It was a solution to this wifi issue posted on another thread, I haven't deleted anything yet.

On a previous post you suggest deleting some bits, are these safe to delete and is it a fix?

Deleting these files is safe. They get rebuild empty after reboot.

It could be a solution if it matches your problem.

Problem = wifi dropping and needs switching back on.

Most annoying one is that I have set my screen to sleep with a hot corner, I have set the computer to never sleep.

When I sleep the screen, within a few minutes the wifi has dis-connected and the screen does not co

E to life by moving the mouse, I have to hit a key or click the mouse as if it is asleep.

This is a problem when you have apple tv's which rely on the IMac .

I will try deleting these bits, could you tell me the best way to find them please.

    Thanks

When I sleep the screen, within a few minutes the wifi has dis-connected and the screen does not come...

In this case, that hint may help.

OK ... switch off wifi on the machine.

    Then go on ...

You will find the files on your system drive (not your home folder) as follow:

    /library/preferences/com.apple.preferences.accounts.plist

    /library/preferences/com.apple.preferences.sharing.plist

    /library/preferences/SstemConfiguration/preferences.plist

    /library/preferences/SstemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

If there are files in this folders with the same name but additional .orig at the end, delete them too.

    Reboot the machine.

    Join your wireless again.

If you are using Lion, the Library is hidden. You have to use "go to" on finder to access them.

Yep. And to rejoin your wireless with password as the settings where deleted.

Eventually check your System Settings - Network to have clear that all settings are as wanted.

    Hi All

I used AppleCare and talked to someone today, advice was a PRAM reset and SMC reset which I had already done.

Next thing we did was trash the system configuration folder, this is the method he talked me through.

    TURN WIFI OFF

Open a finder window and top left should be macintosh hd, click and you see folders on right.

    Click library.

    Click preferences.

In preferences there is a folder called system configuration, drag this to desktop.

    Restart computer.

Join wifi, I didn't need my password as it is still in the keychain.

Trash the folder that is on your desktop.

If your macintosh hd is not at the top of the finder window on the right, here is a helpful link to get it there.

I will update if this works for me :-)

    Same thing here.

Lion was already preinstalled in the mac. WiFi connecton dropping all the time. When I try to switch the wifi off and on computer refuses to switch it back on. Only option for me is to restart computer. I have done all of the above. I will post back to update if this works for me. Than k you for posting this.

    Hello,

Just to inform that the problem is not solved under the 10.7.2 11C62 release.

My experience: After installing Lion over my Snow Leopard on my Imac 27' 2010 i7 8G and experiencing the Wifi not working properly I thought that the problem was due to something bad in the updating process.

So I decided to perform a clean installation of Lion. Then I upgraded to version 10.7.1.  Immediately after the installation everything seemed to work correctly but after one hour Internet access was almost stucked.

The signal strenght is shown at the maximum level but the connection is basicaly stucked.

Sorry to say but also upgrading to the 10.7.2 11C62 is not solving the problem at all.

Then I did exactly the same process on my Macbook Pro 17' and Lion is instead connecting smoothly and working well.

Fact: exactly same OS version, same environment conditions for the wifi and same router.

Both are connected in 802.11g mode. The only apparent difference is the hardware between the two Mac.

    Macbook Pro 17'

    Cardtype:          AirPort Extreme  (0x168C, 0x87)

    Firmware Version :          Atheros 5416: 2.1.14.9

    iMac 27'

    Cardtype: AirPort Extreme  (0x168C, 0x8F)

    Firmware Version : Atheros 9280: 4.0.58.4-P2P

I think this bug is really a nasty one to find because Lion immediately after the 1st installation seems to work correctly but it's like there is something happening under that specific hardware situation (maybe in combination with the router ??) which corrupts the behaviour. In my case even trying all the workaround suggested in all the thread I cannot restore the connection to work like after the 1st clean installation.

I guess that the Apple Team has to find a specific configuration which creates the trouble and debug patiently what is happening ....

11C62 is several iterations behind 11C73

    Depend on region and localisation.

As there was no bug in Lion with the wifi, nothing was to fix with the update

Read the thread carfully and you may find some useful hints to fix your wireless issues.

Eventually, open your own question to get help for fixing your issue.
