Yeah the leather look is really out of character, reminds me of the all the horrendous skinning options you used to get on PC software.
What next - steampunk iCal? Shame as Mail is so nice and clean. Please change it Apple!

Agreed on the reminder of PC and some Mac apps which offered ugly skins. But we're stuck with this cheezy retro look. It seems that the OS has lost focus with this upgrade.
The interface changes appear out of harmony... piecemeal.
I wonder who is in charge of refining the overall look. I can't imagine Steve Jobs looking at this design and saying 'that's cool, go with it!'
I know a 29 year old (I'm 61) Ruby programmer who uses a laptop only (I use a MacPro, iMac 27" and a 2007 MacBook Pro) and he thinks that the look of iCal is cool. I told him that it was sort of cool in 1982 the year he was born, but that that sort of cheeze got stripped out of Mac Apps a long time ago.
Maybe the 30 somethings who have never seen this sort of artificial real world skins will be applauding this but if it's so cool, why not lay it on top of Mail, Safari, etc. As it is, it looks like a decision made by someone too young to remember the interface bad taste that we've moved -away- from over the past 30 years.

Is that Jobs back in the good old days?

No, it is Jonahan Ive
AFAIK he passes on everything from product design to packaging to the look of the OS to the new headquarters.
His taste is impeccable! He must have been on vacation...
EDIT: a younger Jonathan, granted. Perhaps that's why you didn't recognize him

I'd bet Jonathan Ive had nothing to do with the horrible leather look, nor the new less usable layout of Address Book. I bet he hates it, but then I'm being presumptuous.
Apple.. please don't force this cheap and childish look and feel on users. Please give us the option for the former look and feel of Address Book and iCal.

As far as I know you can't but you can download a skin - http://macnix.blogspot.com/ (I suspect there are others but I have used this one).

Please give us the option for the former look and feel of Address Book and iCal.
You can, it's called OS 10.6.8

THANK YOU SO MUCH APPLESMITTY! I am now enjoying iCal again (thank God I don't really use Address Book).

If you have problems with the look of AB and iCal, let Apple know...
Or, file an ER (Enhancement Request) which iis an option in the bug report.
The more who file the better the chances of getting it changed.

OS X Lion is terrible, I want my money back
Currently Being ModeratedJul 23, 2011 1:15 PM (in response to NateOne)
Address Book in Lion is a complete disaster.
Forget for a moment the leather look which as everyone agrees is a hideous embarrassment.
The "book" metaphor is counter-intuitive and confusing, the functionality present in Snow Leopard Address Book has disappeared. It's crap design on every level.
Can anyone work out how to run Snow Leopard Address Book in Lion? I read that it was there as a "classic view" option in the debug menu when Lion was in beta. But it's not there now. Surely there must be some way to restore it while still running Lion?

I like the leather look. You'll probably see a lot of leather and transulcent white in a bunch of designs in years to come.

While I do respect your opinion about Address Book's new look and form. I can't help but chuckle that you have issues with a "book" metaphor for an application that has "Book" in its name.
Please take no offense, I needed a chuckle after reading all the woes in the Lion discussions.

Yes it is hideous. Hopefully Apple will change it in an update.
