Can't Drag and Drop Anything

I've installed OS X Lion and now when I click on an icon on my desktop and drag it, it follows along nicely, only letting go of the mouse button doesn't drop it. In fact, nothing does. Instead the icon hangs onto the cursor as if I have kept holding down the mouse button. If I want to drag something to the trash, when I hover over the Trash icon and let go, it acts like I'm still holding down the mouse button and instead opens up the Trash folder. It's not limited to trash, it's just where I first noticed it. I can't move files between folders.

This pretty much happens across the board, too. Drag an icon off of the dock to remove it, it just hangs onto the mouse pointer and never goes away. Drag an icon from the icon bar at the top (command-click) and you can pick up the icon and move it, but never drop it. Is there a solution to this?

This is a KNOWN BUG that just bit me -- SO ANNOYING, I am on a mid-2009 MBP 17", and Apple is aware of it, read:

http://blog.avatron.com

Air Display on Lion with NVIDIA 9400/9600

When the first Lion previews came out, we discovered a bug in the Mac OS X Event Manager. The bug was very specific, affecting only certain Mac models with NVIDIA 9400M video chipsets, only on Lion, and only when a third-party video driver (like Air Display’s) was installed. Apple’s fixed the bug to some degree over the course of a few Lion updates, but it still affects three Mac models.

Here’s the current status: IF you’re running Lion AND if you have an NVIDIA 9400M/9600M chipset AND you have a third-party video driver installed, THEN you will not be able to release the mouse button while drag-dropping something.

This only affects these Mac models:

  • MacBookPro5,1 (15-inch, Late 2008)
  • MacBookPro5,2 (17-inch, Early or Mid 2009)
  • MacBookPro5,3 (15-inch, Mid 2009)

Until Air Display 1.6, we intentionally disabled Air Display on these Macs, so that people would not find that drag-and-drop was broken. Of course we tried to clearly describe the hardware requirements in our app description and web site.

Well, it turns out that the drag-drop bug only manifests itself if you haven’t done a Wake From Sleep since your last Log In or Restart. So there’s a workaround: After each Log In or Restart, close your MacBook Pro, wait for it to sleep, and then open it again to wake it. It’s a little bit of a pain, but it’s there as a workaround if you want to use Air Display on one of these Macs.

Given that workaround, we have now enabled Air Display on all Macs on Lion. If you have one of those three MacBook Pro models, you might want to decide whether the sleep/wake workaround is worth the hassle for you before purchasing Air Display. But at least now it’s your choice, and if you already own Air Display, you can continue to use it on Lion.

Air Display on Lion with NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M

While we’re talking about Mac OS X bugs that plague third-party video drivers like Air Display…

Besides the drag-drop bug that affects users of 15” and 17” MacBook Pro models from late 2008 to mid 2009, there’s one other known bug that we first saw in Lion:

This only affects the 15” and 17” Mid-2010 MacBook Pro (models MacBookPro6,1 and MacBookPro6,2).

The issue is that when a third-party video driver is installed, these Macs will go to sleep even when they are in use. So for example if you set your Computer Sleep time to fifteen minutes, then after fifteen minutes your computer will sleep regardless of whether it’s idle or not.

Unfortunately there’s no way for us to fix this Mac OS X bug. But we can recommend this simple workaround: Set your Computer Sleep time to NEVER, and use Display Sleep instead.

User uploaded file

This will clear up most of the manifestations of the bug. There are some others that affect particular apps, including 1Password and the Adium Idle status.

We will continue to pester our Apple contacts about this bug (and the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M/9600M one) and keep you posted about the status.

Hey, gang...

I've been having this same problem with AirParrot since my upgrade to Lion a few days ago. After reading the info on the Avatron post above, I discovered that my MacBook Pro is, in fact, a late 2008 model with the NVIDIA 9400 chipset.

Uninstalling AirParrot as well as the two offending AirParrotDriver.kext and APExtFramebuffer.kext files in System>Library>Extensions was the fix. All problems disappeared.

However, because I love AirParrot and it's capabilities, I've decided to live with it for a while by employing the proposed workaround of sleeping the computer once right after a restart, which returns everything to normal. Also, it sounds as if AirParrot tech support is working on it:

Hi Jonathan Rayson,
Yes, we are very aware of this issue. We have been working hard on developing a fix for it that should be released in the very near future with the next version of AirParrot.

Best,
Kyle
AirParrot

Hopefully those of us with older machines/chipsets will get a fix for the 3rd party screen-sharing applications soon. And it's my understanding from a Genius that Mountain Lion will have screen-sharing capability built right in.

Hello everybody

I had many times the same proble u all are describing. I tried all what u post and it doesn't seem to help!! I notice something very strange but funny. I cna eproduce the problem!! When I clean my MacBook case (keaboard and trackpad included) with TechLink liquid product that u can find on Apple Store ( http://store.apple.com/ch-fr/product/TX154ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA2OA&s=topSellers), the problem appears. After some hourse, when theliquid effect dessapears ( i think so), the problem is no more there!!

I know it's very strange and very difficult to accpet.. but, for me, it's really the cause of the problem!!

Any other try this?

Thanks

This is likely because of a problem with the program Air Display or some other associated Avatron program on our macs.

Maybe upgrading to Mountain Lion would help?

This happened to me recently. The only thing I can think is that it was related to a recent OS X Lion update. For the past few days I was not able to drag files between any app and the finder. For example, I could not drag files out of a ZIP archive onto the desktop, and I was not able to drag files from Transmit FTP to any of my Documents folders.

I tried restarting, sleeping, swithing users, etc. Finally, I ran Onyx and restarting. The problem appears to be fixed.

Same drag and drop problem post Lion installation along with a different rogue trackpad problem (Mid/late 2008 Macbook Pro had a swollen battery) solved by uninstalling airdisplay and purchasing a new battery.

I'd just like to point out the fact that both Apple "Genius" call centers and store genius's should familiarize themselves with their apple forums.

After two hours with a genius on the phone to resolve this very issue and the hassle of taking my computer into an actual store for a three minute conversation in which the genius agreed that it was a software issue, sending me off to restore lion which of course didn't work, it figures that neither were as helpful as a two minute google search and this post.

Thats a bit of ridiculousness right there. I know I know, usually I google first with troubleshooting, but I had figured that since I waited for so long for the kinks to be fixed that it was a problem with my computer and not with Apple. Lesson learned, opinion lowered.

I am so glad this is up -

I deleted AirParrot

I even took out my very warm battery

I then made a new user account - none of this worked until:

I put it to sleep!

What finally worked for me was putting it to sleep - I AM SO AMAZING glad I stumbled on this.

This is my 3rd mac - I have had SOOO many problems with it. Like a good VW, I will keep it until the cost to upkeep just gets too overwhelming. THANKS!
