Safari 5.1 won't connect to internet

Updated to Safari 5.1 running 10.6.8 on MacBook Pro. Safari 5.1 will not connect to internet. Firefox and Chrome both connect. Had no problem with 5.0.5 for Snow Leopard, no longer available for download from Apple.

Today (7/21/2011) I upgraded to Safari 5.1 and it won't connect to the Internet. I'm on a Windows PC running Vista with all the latest updates. When the initial upgrade didn't work, I deleted Safari and downloaded and installed a fresh copy. The new install had the same problem. When I open Safari I get my Top Sites page. When I click any of the sites the page clears and I get the address of the site in the address box, but the page never loads. I found the process WebKit2WebProcess.exe running in the Task Manager and specifically set up an exceptiion in the Windows Firewall Settings to allow the program through the firewall, but I still can't connect to the Internet. I think Apple has broken Safari with it's latest version.

Thanks for that. I had the same problem, solved it by opening Little Snitch configuration and discovered that I had accidentally set a rule denying WebProcess permission to "Allow TCP connections to port 80 (http) of www.google-analytics.com". Once I restored permission, Safari was able to connect to the internet again.

If anyone runs across my post of 7/21/2011 regarding Safari 5.1 not connecting to the Internet on my Windows Vista system, BorisKon suggested I run a command prompt window as administrator and execute the command "netsh winsock reset". I tried this and now Safari 5.1 can access the Internet. See the discussion at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3194305?answerId=15734035022#15734035022. I had to reboot for the command to take effect.

Mike41,

You are DA MAN! Thanks so much for that post...Let me just say that this WINSOCK reset fixes a number of problems concerning APPLE products on Windows...

My first symptom was AppleMobileDeviceService.exe, Webkit2Webprocess.exe, and Itunes, exe when launched were using 100% of my CPU until i reset the Winsock catalog...

Until now i was unable to sync my iphone/ipod, launch itunes and connect to store, connect with SAFARI; nothing was working...WOW what a simple fix for such an annoying problem...Think apple needs to spend some time in figuring out they corrupted the catalog in the first place...I noticed this issue just after at 10.4 install.

Safari 5.1 and “WebProcess”: PROBLEM SOLVED

The culprit is “Little Snitch”

I am running OS 10.6.8 (Lion-ready). Yesterday, I installed the Safari updater from 5.0.5 to 5.1 . . . and am experiencing repeated and annoying pop-up windows for "WebProcessing."

I found the culprit to be the third-party utility "Little Snitch" — which monitors outgoing internet connections. (http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html).

I solved the problem by upgrading (FREE) Little Snitch v2.0.x to v2.4 (for Snow Leopard and Lion).

PROBLEM SOLVED.
