Communicator for Mac crashes with Lion
Microsoft Communicator for Mac 13.1.1 crashes when using Lion. Any idea for a workaround or fix?

That sounds like a feature, not a bug.
Upgrade Office to 2011 might be a good choice. Or see if there's a separate upgrade for Communicator.
This has been a problem throughout the Developer Preview cycle; No workaround nor fix has been obvious. The application runs, but, crashes when messages are sent or received. Annoying in corporate environments. Crash reports have been submitted to Microsoft, but it will be up to them to release an update.
Actually MS has a fix/patch for this but they haven't released it. You will have to ask from their support to get it. Hopefully they will release it public very soon..
Hello chrisr1965,
If it's helpful, have a look at http://blog.officeformac.com/office-for-mac-2011-and-mac-os-x-10-7-lion/ - Microsoft's Mac team are working to resolve this known issue with Communicator in the Lion's environment.
Hopefully it won't be too long before it's remedied.
KB article addressing the same: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2586538
It's humorous how in the blog post they mention that the MS engineers have been running Lion for months... And yet Communicator (the only way I assume that a MS Engineer would be able to communicate inside microsoft) fails 100% of the time to do the primary task that app was made for, "sending an IM". I don't buy it.
On a positive note, Microsoft Messenger 7.0.2 works just fine on my Lion system! Still available to download, works with our corporate system, basic but functional! 🙂

Works PERFECTLY. Thank you danbell!!! Forwarding this to my internal IT staff. (Microsoft should update their KB article with this workaround!)
Brilliant! Thanks much.
Someone posted a fix for it here:

Desktop sharing doesn't work though.
Microsoft has released their patch: 13.1.2
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=26835
It fixes the hard crash of Communicator when used in Lion.

Thanks! I've installed the update, IM is working, video is working, audio is working, but screen sharing will no work. Seems like Microsoft copied the fix from the blogger who says screensharing doesn't work for him either.

Using Messenger 7.0.2 with corporate contacts using a server version 2007. Worked fine with OS 10.6.7. Seems to work fine with 10.7 for text messages, but quits responding after initiating a voice call. When you say works perfectly, does that include voice calls?
Nope, never used voice calls, we have phones for that. I guess it's not "perfect" then, sorry. Did you install the update yet that Donn listed abve? If so, let Microsoft know that your voice calls aren't working.
Thanks for clarifying. Can't use Donn's patch or Microsoft update because I do not have access to Communicator. The organization I work for does not support Mac so I'm on my own. Already notified Microsoft about the Messenger problem and will post a reply if it comes.
