Me too! Still locked out.
Same problem. I can get to the Mac OS X utility screen but do not want to reinstall or restore from time machine unless I have to.
Itried to reinstall didnt work.
All useraccounts are disappeared after migrating OSX SLS to Lion. No solution found until yet. I'm happy to be able to test this migration on a separated test-server.
I'm a bit disappointed about server control and maintenances. It looks like if the most of the utilities are gone. Where is the manual?

I spoke to Apple last night. In my case I had a Time Machine backup. The only option for me was to wipe the Hard Drive and restore from Time Machine. I am going to hold off on reinstalling Lion until some of the bugs are worked out.
To get to the Utilies screen you insert the SNOW LEOPARD disk and shut down. Power on the machine again and as soon as you release the power button put your finger on the letter C key until you get to the apple logo with the spinning wheel. From here I was able to wipe the hard drive and then run a time machine restore.
We tried about 5 different things before we got to this option. Depending on your machine, you may have other options. My machine is kind of old since it is a 2006 IMac. Good luck!
Same for me.
So I called the Apple Hotline.
We tried :
/user/sbin/resetpassword
didn't word
resetpassword
didn't work
And then we did a blank reinstall, with recovery of Time Machine Backup. Failed again.
Right now, I'm back to Snow, and I'll attempt another call as soon as I gain some extra stamina.
This has been solved elsewhere. Try this:
• Reboot your mac, hold down Command R just as it chimes
• Select Disk Utilities then Terminal
• Type resetpassword and hit Return
• Select root and enter a root password
• Go to Apple Menu > Restart
• Log in as root using the password you just created
• Go in System Preferences > Users & Groups
• Create a new Administrator account using the same exact name, short name and password as your old user account (same capitalization of short name is important)
• When you accept it will say "The Users folder already contains a folder with the same name as the home folder for this account"
• Select "Use Existing Folder"
• Log out or reboot and you should see your old user there, try logging in
thank you for the information, but so far it has not worked.
I have entered the short name and password exactly as they were before. The system will not accept.
This is absolutely HORRIBLE!
I remotely updated my parents 2010 iMac and after restarting lost all remote access. They told me only "Guest" was the available account but didn't know the password.
I had to come onto this forum to find the answer, but try walking a pair of 80 year old's on which buttons to press and what to type in to get their iMac back up and running.
No excuse. Beta testers obviously did NOT do their jobs (of which, I was one of them).
BTW, hold the "R" key didn't do anything, so I had them hold the OPTION key which presented the boot volumes and had them select RECOVERY. Once booted into the Recovery system (which I am absolutely thrilled this is now part of OS X BUILT-IN, introduced with Lion), I had them select the Terminal app via menubar...
I was facing the same issue today, I was able to solve it doing the following steps:
- go to System Preferences > users and groups
- select Guest Account and uncheck "Allow guests to connect to this computer"
- close System Preferences
- go to System Preferences > users and groups
- select Guest Account and check back "Allow guests to connect to this computer"
Hope it helps.
I have the same problem. I can only login with a guest account. Optionally I can enter a password but I dont know what it is 😟 I need help. Tried what the other posters said but nothing worked for me. Using 10.7.2
I tried to reinstall Lion via Internet from the utilities. Didn´t work!!! I still cannot see my previous Login Infos. Only the Guest Account is showing up, when I click the round picture it tells me that it will restart with safari-only-mode. I can enter a password below but I dont know which to type since I tried all my pw´s. Please help somebody. Im desperate
Same problem here. Tried the password reset mentioned above and no good. Looking to reinstall Lion but looking here that doesn't seem it would help either. So Apple...your upgrade is causing some issues how about a solution?
I fixed this by deleting the login preferences.
You need to get a terminal or console somehow (I booted up in recovery mode and then opened the Terminal app) and then deleted the file:
/Volumes/<your root volume>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
