Library Will Not Connect to Images on Remote Drive Since Lion

I keep my Aperture library on my local drive but the actual image files on a USB drive connected to an Airport base station. This has been working fine for months. Since I upgraded to Lion, Aperture insists that the volume containg the images is offline even though it is mounted and I can browse it in finder. I tried using the 'Located referenced files' options and re-connecting to one my files, but when I did so Aperture says the file is an 'Unsupported image type'.

I would really appreciate any suggestions on how to proceed.

@colin239: Your problem has nothing to do with the one we have here, theres is no crashes, no spinning ball of death, etc... simply the fact that Aperture looses connection to referenced file everytime it is opened.

@Ernie : This article also has nothing to do with our problem here. I've been using Aperture for 2 years now with over 20'000 referenced files on a network drive (Windows home server) without any problem at all.

Hope Apple will issue a fix for us quickly, otherwise I'll have to go back to Snow Leopard ;-(

Thanks For all the links and input Ernie. I think you are absolutely correct in this case. I feel I have been lucky up until this point. I hope it's something Apple will fix but judging from the lack of a solutuon in the past, I seriously doubt this will be fixed.

With LR3 on promo for $120 right now...looks like I may have to jump ship.

I think that would be very unpredictable. The Aperture Library Package is very complicated, and even though the Masters are on another drive, the connection is nonetheless complicated. I have seen evidence of bad directories for other things on a drive cause some headaches with Aperture. If Lion (or as some people may have experienced with later versions of SL and/or Aperture) changed a directory somewhere, that change might impact access via SL as well. I have separate boot volumes for SL and Lion, and will not seriously push Lion without the ability to instantly boot up in Snow Leopard, and my primary Library is never on the boot volume.

You might try copying the files on the Network drive to a properly formated FW External, and copying the Aperture LIbrary to still another, and connecting. Just a basic file copy might improve things. A test I would recommend first would be to Launch Aperture to create a New Library, and not try to open the existing.

Do they tell us somewhere that referenced file on a network drive is not supported?

In the advisory titled to be about Vaults it not only says they don't work for that, but may be saying they are not recommended for Aperture, period -- but that may be an extreme reading:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TA23750

Combine that with the earlier http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3252 and I would think it inadvisable, at a minimum.

As to whether there would ever be a change in this, I can only observe that for an application that prides itself on protecting the Masters at all cost, it seem illogical to expose them on a Network drive -- might seem that way to the developers.
