Q: Library Will Not Connect to Images on Remote Drive Since Lion

I keep my Aperture library on my local drive but the actual image files on a USB drive connected to an Airport base station. This has been working fine for months. Since I upgraded to Lion, Aperture insists that the volume containg the images is offline even though it is mounted and I can browse it in finder. I tried using the 'Located referenced files' options and re-connecting to one my files, but when I did so Aperture says the file is an 'Unsupported image type'.

I would really appreciate any suggestions on how to proceed.

As one of the naysayers, I am happy for you.  However, there remain recently written support articles that go to the trouble to say "Network volumes are not recommended or supported for Aperture."  No where can I find it written that this does not apply to referenced images.  Why would I not be suspicious?

Very happy to have Aperture "magically" finding all my referenced images on a NAS now.  Also feels quite a bit snappier.  Hope we are set for a while, as this was really the last straw for me.  Had LR trial loaded and just about ready to pull the trigger.

Not happy to see that there is no mention of this in the kb fixes list - really, why not address it?

Interesting that everyone says it's now fixed, I've just upgraded to lion after reading this and it is still an issue for me with Lion 10.7.2 and aperture 3.2

My referenced files are on my NAS and my pictures folder is attached via NFS

Anyone else still with this issue? Could it be the fact I use NFS?

    Thannks,

    Tim.

All fixed for me since Lion 10.7.2 and Aperture 3.2, using NAS with Samba.

    Cheers

Only tested once or twice, but I'm using NFS for storing my external references and it seemed ok last time I spun up aperture.

Reporting in...  Everything is working perfectly for me again, too.  Aperture 3.2 and Lion 10.7.2

Hmmm, all very strange, I've now updated to 3.2.1 of Aperture and still have this issue

Can I be the only person with this issue still? All worked perfectly with Snow Lepord.

I just purchased Aperture, got the latest version installed on OS X Lion 10.7.2. I got this problem with my RAW masters that live on an external USB drive. The masters are reported as offline as soon as Aperture is restarted, but I have no problems finding the files in Finder.

    Hi,

My issue is with all my photos stored on my NAS be it RAW or JPG. It's very strange that everyone on this thread apart from SuperRune and myself are saying the issue is fixed where it clearly is not for me.

I've tried this on two machines now, my iMac and Macbook Pro, both exhibit the issue.

I have sent a bug report to apple through their site. But I hope that there are more users that still have the same problem, so there is a chance they will investigate it.

Out of curiousity, how is your NAS formatted? My USB drive is NTFS, and I wonder if that could be the problem. If I manage to clean one of my other drives, I'll format it for the mac, move the files over, and see if that helps.

My NAS has an ext3 filesystem, I connect to it via NFS (the most reliable way I found, tried AFP/SAMBA etc before)

I'm having the same problem as others here.  Just "upgraded" from Aperture v2.something (which was working fine) to Aperture v3.2.1.  All my images in Aperture have now lost their links to the referenced (.NEF) files.  If I use the "Locate Referenced Files..." command from the Aperture File menu (on just a single image; click on "Reconnect" button rather than the "Reconnect All" button), ALL Aperture images become reconnected with the referenced (.NEF) files AND the status of the volume "Users" goes from "Offline" to "Online."  Howver, when I quit Aperture and restart it, ALL the links to the referenced files are broken again.

I'm using Mac OS X v10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).  My entire Users directory (Aperture library, referenced .NEF files, Apple Address Book, Excel/Word documents, Outlook Identity, etc./EVERYTHING) is on a server (not my local machine).  Everything else works perfectly.  Aperture v2.somthing worked perfectly too.

I'm facing the same issue since my update to Lion.

When I was running Snow Leopard, Aperture was able to manage referenced files over NFS. Now using Lion and the same Aperture release the files are marked as unlinked. I can reconnect all of them using the "Locate reference file" option, but the next time I start Aperture the file will be unconnected again.

I don't know what the issue here, but clearly the move to Lion raised the issue.

New to A3 (2 days) and now I know why I can't see files in A3 when I can see them in Finder. I also purchased PSE 10 the same day as A3.Tyring to figure out if I like one over the other. This may be a deal breaker for me if they don't get it fixed. Will also send a bug report to Apple.

Am at a complete loss. Have A3 (3.2.2) on my laptop running 10.6.8 and cannot link to my files on an external firewire hard drive. (Have gone to relink files and can find them but even though I find the exact file that I need the appropriate buttons are greyed out.) This is something I've been able to do in the pas no problem. But not being able to is a MAJOR problem. I've gone through this discussion and have no idea what to do to fix this.

    Help.
