Q: Library Will Not Connect to Images on Remote Drive Since Lion

I keep my Aperture library on my local drive but the actual image files on a USB drive connected to an Airport base station. This has been working fine for months. Since I upgraded to Lion, Aperture insists that the volume containg the images is offline even though it is mounted and I can browse it in finder. I tried using the 'Located referenced files' options and re-connecting to one my files, but when I did so Aperture says the file is an 'Unsupported image type'.

I would really appreciate any suggestions on how to proceed.

I am also having this problem after upgrading Aperture to 3.1.3 and OS 10.7.  I submitted feedback here with a feedback type "Bug Report".

Thank you. I've decided to move on to LR3. The notion that a modern program cannot support files stored on a network is, IMHO, absurd. If the Aperture database cannot reliably work with referenced images located on remote storage, then this should be clearly stated in the documentation and the user should not be permitted to do it.

Anyway, with LR3 I get automatic lens abereation correction with raw files which is increasingly essential for me.

What does that prove?  I am sure Aperture could Import from there as well.

Apple will fix it in Lion, soon.

We just need a temp solution with an external drive, for a few days.

What if we all send a bug report here http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html !!!

I just don't understand why you have this expectation.  In the support docs I have already referenced, and in the following one, Apple simply does not recommend anything except the Mac OS Extended file system.  When they say "best performance with Aperture" it is unlikely they are going to suddenly say other formats will be trouble free:

Ernie, thanks for the links and references, but I have the expectation that Aperture will support storing masters on network storage because of statements like this in the Aperture Help:

Importing Image Files Stored on Your Computer or Connected Servers

You can import image, audio, and video files stored on your computer and other storage devices. You have a choice of storing the imported files in the Aperture library; importing the files as referenced images, audio clips, and video clips and then leaving them in their current location; or importing the files as referenced images, audio clips, and video clips and then moving or copying them to a different location.

I did extensive research on both Aperture and LR before making a choice to ensure that both programs supported my current server-based storage.  I found the references that say the Aperture library should be local, but nothing stating that the masters couldn't be on networked storage.

Also, it has worked perfectly for a couple years up until we installed Lion.  This can't be a coincidence.

I have the expectation of a bug fix soon so I can once again work with my 30,000+ image library on my network storage.  If not, LR here I come.

I sincerely hope you are rewarded.  But I think we have seen the specs tightening, and my reading of pre-Lion experiences would lead me to think there has been no guarantee of it working.

@Ernie: I'm still using Apple Server and they have a Mac OS Extended file system. Please stay with you local drives, if it's now working for you.

@Daghood: The romor pages on the web are spreading the word, that the first update of Lion is around the corner, since the current build was out as GM since 1.July.

We all can go back to SL for a few more days if needed, there is no rush. (backup plan ;-))

When I imported new photos from memory card my library was properly referenced again..all 25,000 photos.  I can do my adjustments and all other features.  When I close Aperture and reopen I lose the reference again..until I do another import from a memory card.  I keep Aperture running all the time.  Hopefully Aperture will fix the bug

After an entire weekend of doing my own research on this issue, I think I have a better idea of the actual problem.

I believe it has little to do with instability from having referenced masters on a networked drive.

I believe it has more to do with the UUID of the network share changing after upgrading to Lion.

The share names remained intact when upgrading, but it's pretty clear to me that the UUID of the shared volumes changed so Aperture thinks the original volume is offline.  Aperture apparently references volumes by UUID, not shared names.

I believe EVERYONE who uses a network share for their referenced masters has this problem after the Lion upgrade.

I found dozens of references to the issue.  Here are some of the more poignant references to the issue:

Hopefully this will give new light to this discussion and will be something Apple will address.

I think you're probably on the right track, however there may be something more fundamental broken. I created a new library under Lion, mounted my USB drive connected to my Airport, and imported photos as referenced masters. Once I closed Aperture and restarted it, the drive showed as off-line. You would think that the UUID would be the same 30 seconds after closing the application woth a new library and a drive mounted with Lion.
