Q: After Lion upgrade, having network issues after wake from sleep

After upgrading to Lion from 10.6.8 on my MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011), I am unable to connect to the Internet after the computer wakes from sleep.  I should rephrase this - I am able to ping IP's and DNS (DNS servers are present) however none of my apps will connect (Safari, iChat, etc) -> they all indicate the Internet is unavailable.  I have two Airport Express's running 7.5.2 extending a WiFi network off an Airport Extreme running 7.5.2.  This issue is specific to waking from sleep.  Any thoughts or suggestions would be appriciated.

I too was having this problem. After reading the console logs I noticed quite a few Little Snitch errors. Little Snitch was broken, the version was incompatible with Lion. I updated Little Snitch and now my WiFi is working after waking from sleep. I have tried it three times now after it always failing to connect before the update of LS.

    Hopefully this helps someone else.

@JimHughes, its interesting that you say that your problems were related to Little Snitch. I initially blamed Little Snitch as well, however I have had the issue come up while Little Snitch's Network Filter was disabled. After reading your post, I also went ahead and uninstalled Little Snitch just to be sure.

After my MBP just went to sleep while I went for a coffee break, I came back to a MBP on which Adium, Safari and Mail all failed to connect to their respective servers (Adium hangs, Mail is responsive, but fails to quit - another bug?). Safari started working again after i unplugged the gigabit cable and plugged it back in.

Anyway the computer scientist inside me is certain that this is an OS issue.

EDIT: Just to reiterate, this is a clean install.

Same problem since Snow Leopard.  Lion did not change anything for me.

Just chiming in to add that I'm experiencing the same problem. I tried a suggested workaround of deleting all of the random hotel/coffee shop/airport networks from my Network Preferences, to no avail. Toggling WiFi on and off works, but hopefully we get a fix soon.

Same here... Already checked internet, renewed DHCP, etc, still no solution. Problem occured when updated to Lion. There are many more people with the same problem, I reckon. See this thread: Why won't mac recognize I am connected to network?

I am also having the same problem: if Time Machine is backing up when I shut the lid, the Mac will not connect to wifi on waking. I'm running Lion on a 13.3" 2.7GHz MBP with solid state drive, no unusual software or utilities, connecting via DHCP to an up-to-date Time Capsule.

Toggling wifi off and on again fixes the issue, but the toggling is slow.

    @Russo017,

I don't know what else to say, after updating Little Snitch I am able to connect to my wifi now, consistently.

I am using an Airport Eetreme, 7.5.2 I think. I am not at home right now.

I did not unistall Little Snitch, I updraded it. Whether or not there are files left behind by the Little Snitch installer that are still causing errors I do not know. I did notice however, that when I upgraded Little Snitch it did update my boot cache's. Could this be related? Or have I just been lucky these past few times that I have been conecting? I don't know. But if I still do not have the wifi connect problem after a day or so, I'll let you know.

I slso do have a TIme Machine volume but have not had any problems that seem related to that volume.

I'm not using Little Snitch and getting the problems with internet fail (it isn't just wifi because my internet is delivered over my network ethernet).

The Time Machine information seemed interesting. One time I had a fail to connect after sleep I rapidly checked upper right and noticed that TM was doing a backup. I opened Safari while it was doing the backup and nothing - fail. I waited until TM had finished and started Safari again, it worked, internet was back. However, another time I had a fail to connect I went throught the same routine and the internet failed completely even after TM had finished. Also I'm not even sure TM is running every time it fails, so maybe that was a coincidence?

Anyway, we ALL need to provide bug reports otherwise Apple will NEVER fix this - this problem has been around since 2008, maybe later.

I'm glad that worked for you, but we've already established that this happens even on brand new clean installs, so it's not related to any applications, it's some sort of bug in the OS itself.

No the bug has not been around since 2008 - the specific bug people are talking about in this forum relating to Time Machine backing up when sleeping is since Lion came out not before.

Thanks for trying to help Luke. But actually I was referring to this bug we're all discussing about the losing internet connection after waking from sleep.

The front page of this thread is discussing how the bug seems to happen when shutting the lid/sleeping whilst backing up - this also seems to be the theme throughout the thread.......

We're all on the same page here (or rather thread) ... I'm not sure what you are confused over. We're all talking about losing internet connection when waking from sleep. The TM and Little Snitch ideas (amongst others, on this and other threads) are people trying to work out what is causing the problem. And it is a bug that has been around in threads dating back to 2008 - possibly later, I can't be bothered to check.

Yes, in particular I am wondering if this may have something to do with the boot caches.

Since Little snitch did update them.

In other words, I am not saying that this is a problem related to the application but whatever happened while updating the application, may be related.

I just logged a formal bug on this via bugreport.apple.com. The Bug ID is 9834032.

Let's hope we see some action from Apple to fix this. It is beyond annoying.
