can not connect to internet after installing lion

I downloaded lion and left to go to work with it installing. I came home to my computer running lion and very happy with the shiny new system. The only problem is that I can't connect to the internet.

Now before you tell me to call my service provider, I did that. And I know that that isn't the problem. I am able to connect to skype and I actually had a full video call just a minute ago. But my mail app and both chrome and safari are telling me that they can not connect.

Any one got any ideas? I've exhausted my supply of ideas here.

Mac Book Pro, 15 inch, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.6.1)

You might have an HTTP proxy enabled for whatever reason. Go to System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies and disable anything there. If that isn't the problem, check to make sure your network settings are all correct.

Definitely not that. I have nothing selected in there and as I said, I've already checked all my settings. And as mentioned, I can connect to skype.

After trying unsuccessfully to get online again through network diagnostic, I just tuned off wi-fi (used to be airport on leopard) paused a few seconds, restarted wi-fi and I was back online.

No dice. I've tried that numerous times. I've even tried taking the wireless router out of the picture and connected directly to my computer.

Also, it is DEFINITELY not the internet service because I'm writing this from my sisters mac book (without lion) and I'm connected just fine.

You said in your original post that Skype worked, but Safari and Chrome did not, but you later said that Skype did not work.

So no internet functions work on your Mac? Do network functions work, like file sharing?

I must have mistyped. Skype DOES work. And I am even able to get mail through ONE of my mailboxes. But chrome, safari and my other mailbox all fail. I have not tried file sharing. So 2 out of those 5 things works and my sisters computer is working just fine, I have no idea what could be wrong

you might want to try disabling AVAST if you have it installed. I spent hours trying to fix this, and then i simply deleated AVAST and magically it worked! I found the info on a thread here and it worked!

Right, I saw that. In general, don't use antivirus on a Mac, especially browser security. It is worse than a virus, and the worst thing a Mac can get it seems is pretty obvious and very rare malware like MACDefender.

Besides, after Snow Leopard, Apple included a lightweight malware checker for these things.
