I am pretty sure it is not because the software you downloaded is corrupted. I have the lion installer and it passes the checksum, but I still ran into the same problem. Finally I found out a solution:

1. Open the content of the Lion installer (right click on the installer and select Show Package Contents).

2. Navigate into a sub-directory where you can find two .dmg file in it. One .dmg file is LionGAInstallESD.dmg. Double click to open it.

3. You will find another Install OS X Lion application in it. Double click and run it.

4. The installer will download something from the Internet and start to install Lion.

I was in your same situation with 14 downloads and 14 attempts.

You have to make sure that your Mac is booting into 64 bit mode. You can make sure of this by going into System Preferences and scrolling down to 'Software' and making sure that you are booding with 64 bit Kexts.

If not, restart while holding the 6 and 4 keys down until you see the spinning gear wheel and try installng again.

BUT, what I also did was to go into Applications, click on the Lion installer, Get Info, and give yourself custom priviliges to Read And Write.

I did this simultaneously, and I don't know what function did it, but it worked for me, with no further downloads of the installer.

Good luck!

  • Exit App Store
  • Exit Lion Installation (if it opens)
  • Go to Applications folder
  • Find and Delete the file named "Install Mac OS X Lion"
  • Restart the Mac
  • Open App Store
  • Go to Purchases tab
  • Click Install to redownload the OS X Lion
  • If it shows as Installed:
  • To redownload the installer, press and hold the Option key while you click the Purchases tab. If the button to the right of the Install Mac OS X Lion item doesn't change to "Install" and allow you to download Lion, use Spotlight to search for "Install Mac OS X Lion" on your computer.

That's it!

Hello All,

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.

Finally I managed to both download and install Lion on the MBP of a friend. Here are the details:

  • The download lasted more than 22 hours;
  • I monitored it closely this time, checking time and time again that it was downloading correctly;
  • The computer was set to never sleep;
  • When there was supposed to be only a minute left (but still half a gig to go), I paused the download and resumed it (beware: don't shutdown or restart your computer at this point as you'll have to start the download process all over again: it happened to me! 😟 );
  • Suddenly, the minute left transformed itself to an hour and a half (or so);
  • When the download was over, the installation process of Lion started by itself (thing that did not occur in earlier download attempts);
  • I quit this process and;
  • I "checksummed" the file InstallESD.dmg as per a review posted on cnet.com;
  • Luckily the checksum corresponded;
  • I then proceeded to save to another place the installation program (Install Mac OS X Lion.app) to be on the safe side;
  • I proceeded with the installation and half an hour or so after, voilà, the great Lion was installed. No permission change needed, no 64 bit startup of the computer (although I suspect that it was already runing in 64 bit mode).

Anyway, happy ending and I have a happy friend to whom I gave "the Lion" as a gift 🙂

Cheers all,

Peter

Hello all,

I did what meraTechStuff suggested. Namely to delete and re-download Lion, but at 12 hours+ per download, it's a hefty price to pay for a download that at the end doesn't work.

So, on my side, twice downloaded, twice "The software could not be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading."

The closest Mac Store is hours driving away from where I am.

Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance,

Peter

Hi there, I had the same issue happen to me trying to download and install Lion. I had to download it 4 times and all failed with the same error message. Finally, I figured I was making the download from behind my organization's proxy, so I turned that off and downloaded the file one last time (the fifth), and sure enough, I could tell right from the start of the download process that this time it was gonna be different judging by the the blue progress line on Lion's icon in the dock, this line had been stretched to the length of the entire monitor on the previous, corrupted downloads, buf with this one it was confined to the icon's length, the way it should appear. The dowwnload completed and I installed Lion successfully. This might shed more light on the issue with some of you out there experiencing the same problem.

A client's 27-inch Core i3 iMac (Mid-2010) with 10.6.8 had this error come up when upgrading to Lion. After a lot of troubleshooting, I narrowed it down to a bad stick of RAM. After I removed the bad stick, the install ran fine. I suggest downloading Applejack with Memtest and running Memtest in single-user mode. It will let you know if you have some bad RAM.

I didn't try it like iMas119, but that may be easier than what I did. If that doesn't work for you, try this:

After my second download, I refused to download it again. I followed the instructions to create a Lion Install Disk in the article linked below. Worked perfect. Starts on the page 2, about halfway down.
